    Did Maori have stonework and stone carving like others Polynesian and Indonesian? i never see any of it, but Hawaiian, Micronesian, Fijian, Tongan, Samoan, Tahitian, Cook Islander and Rapa Nui are well knows

    • @MMadesen
      @MMadesen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They did. But New Zealand has much more trees than the rest of Polynesia, and also better tree species for carving. Since wood is far easier to carve then stone, they preferred wood.
      Māori also carved into stone and bone though. Theres a well known example at the shore of Lake Taupo.

    • @safuwanfauzi5014
      @safuwanfauzi5014 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MMadesen lake taupo were carved in 70s, in pre-european maori do not have metal tool not even bronze or copper, that why they never have alot stone carving, relief, stone building unlike indonesian which also a islander and cousin, for example, borobodur relief with story of the kingdom, religion and also show borobodur ship as seafearing people, they also built pyramid like strucutre like candi sukuh and candi cetho, and also many big statue. the statue of malay king 'Adityawarman king of Malayapura" for example, you never see maori have stone or wood statue like that.

      @MMadesen ปีที่แล้ว

      @@safuwanfauzi5014 You are right, didnt know that the Taupo carvings were so recent.
      But pre european Māori still did some stone and bone carving, mostly for jewelry though.

      @@safuwanfauzi5014 New Zealand has been inhabited far less than all of the places you mentioned and anyway, where do you think the Maori came from?🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
      They carved stone into weapons, taonga and tools. The abundance of fine trees is the most likely reason that material was used.
      Also, Maori did not just tattoo themselves like other Polynesian nations did, they carved their skin with chisels thus producing deep scars like they did when carving timber.
