Great video as always when I was homeless and living in a tent something that would help with attend is taking one of them survival blankets and putting it in between the tent and the rain fly that helps and then also taking the little hand warmers like the 10 hour hand warmers or 18 hour hand warmers and putting them in the bottom of your sleeping bag to keep your feet warm

People can learn a lot about survival from the homeless. You could do your channel on something like that. I for one wouldn’t mind learning.

The dead elk you found are the remains from a hunt last fall. Usually hunters leave the lower legs, hids and gut pile. Usually the gut pile is first to go

Nice camp. I’m giving Cuervo Negro the trail name “Smooth Fox” because in his silence he is Smoothing it. He has the cot, a jacket to loan you that he didn’t need and he had coffee on before you got up. Love you Junkyard Fox but the Smooth Fox is my first choice for camping buddy. Your not a green chili hore if you haven’t had a La Malinche burger, my favorite is on the north east side in my old hood in the old Devils Triangle (Angels Triangle now) before I moved back to Austin. You’ve got a base camp here in Austin if you feel like a road trip, great summer camping with swimming holes.

So I put too layers of socks & in between the layers I activated 4 of those hand warmers & put 1 under My toes & 1 under My heels of each foot = it was amazing and worked great at keeping My feet warm and helped keep the sleeping bag warm!

Do your research and buy wisely.....Thanks for taking us along...even if it was cold.....

You are lucky! The last thing that you want to do I the cold is drink alcohol. It causes your pours to open and you dump your core temp! A tip for sleeping in the cold, if you get cold shed layers while in your sleeping bag.
The hand warmer in the bottom of the sleeping bag, if you sleep with your head under the covers, you take a chance of suffocation!

Hey James,,, just finished watching your 1st winter overnight. The 2 of you are amazing,,,!!!! I really enjoy winter/Fall/Early spring camping. The key for me is to “layer up”,,, a good backpacking air mattress, down sleeping bag,, all is well,,!!!! Someday I’ld like you 2 to visit the Appalachian mountains,,, small mouth bass fishing on the Shenandoah River, trout fishing in a natural stream or just really seeing for yourself, way they call these mountains,, the blue ridge. The Rio Grande and the Shenandoah,,, 2 iconic Places,,,, Really enjoyed this video,,, God bless,,,, Appalachian Trucker,,, Joshua Lamb

I very much loved your camping video in the mountains of New Mexico. I'm not sure if I could also handle the cold like what you experienced. Where I live it never gets too cold (only too hot) and in my state maybe snow sometimes in a mountain range in the south of Western Australia. Mind you if I decide to move to Tasmania which is a possibility certainly within the next 2 years, I will have to acclimatise to their somewhat cooler climate. I was definitely not in Tasmania long enough, as there is so much to see and I may return to check out the place properly towards the end of this or next year. The south west of Tasmania is mostly uninhabited. You have most likely heard of the Tasmanian devil, which is nearly an endangered species due to a facial cancer which was killing it, but apparently the devil is making a bit of a comeback from what I have recently read. While I was there I had to visit the museum in Hobart, the capital to get a better idea of what happened to the thylacine or Tasmanian tiger, a marsupial like the kangaroo or Tasmanian devil. The general consensus is that it died out and the last video of one alive was taken in 1933, although some people I talked to in Tasmania think there may be some still in the wild. Australia in particular is famous for killing endemic animals which is a tragic indictment. I don't want to criticise the politicians too much but thanks to their incompetence the fires that occurred in the eastern states and did so much damage killing people and maybe millions of wildlife, would have been due to their wrong policies and had the politicians put into place aboriginal management of the area the fires probably wouldn't have caused so much damage. The aboriginals would have done strategic burn offs of the small brush and knew the plants well. The ecologists and resource management experts are only now coming to the view that the local aboriginals knew best how to manage the land and the forests. In Tasmania there are no kangaroos, but there are wallabies which are like a small kangaroo. Kangaroo if prepared properly is very good to eat, good to marinate in red wine with garlic in the flesh and cooked very lightly as there is negligible fat in kangaroo. So definitely if I move to Tasmania I hope to try a wallaby if they are allowed to be culled and eaten as food. I'm not sure what the policies are regarding wallabies if you can kill (shoot) them in Tasmania. If I need any gear I'll see if it is not extra expensive (due to shipping to Australia) and buy it from you. As you know guns are more difficult to obtain in Australia since 1996, when just after the Port Arthur massacre happened the Prime Minister enacted gun buy back laws. My uncle was particularly pissed off when he had to give up a valuable rifle to the police because of these new laws. In fact I visited the Port Arthur penal settlement in the south east of Tasmania where the massacre happened as it's a tourist site. You make great videos, I think the whisky and coke would go well with such cold temperatures!

It will actually make you colder! Strip down to your underroos! Your body heat work more efficient. Good job!

It was nice to come along on your trip....as an observer. _Smiles_
When I'm worried that my bag might not be warm enough, I take a liter soda pop bottle full of hot water into the bag. It will stay hot for about 4-5 hours and I've never had one leak. As the water cools, it will pull a vacuum...you'll need pliers to get it back open.
AliExpress is down right now so I can't post a link. They have Aegismax brand down filled booties (800 fill power down) for about $15. They are ultralight, pack very small and are great quality.
If yr feet are already cold, it takes forever to get them warm in your bag...even if it's a heavy one.

Might want to invest in some cold weather gear, if you'll be doing that again. Can really get dangerous in that kind of cold. I got mild frostbite sickness once. And once is enough, thank you. Not fun.
But a tip on those tortillas... bring some foil with you to roll them in. You can set that to the side of the fire. They'll be steamed and yummy and soft once your food is done. And the potatoes... if you bring steamed, whole potatoes, they are so fast and easy to cook. You can steam them before hand, 20 mins in a steamer basket. So easy. Or baked for an hour or more.
Some cayenne powder sprinkled in your socks also helps keep your circulation up in your feet, when it's cold. Can't have you guys freezing to death on us!

Junkyard Fox I’m gonna get my second pair for next winter but my old ones do still work at 10 yrs old just saw them at dicks sporting goods and on amazon for$109 which isn’t bad for what u get but depending on what size and color you get they can get up to $200 plus but shop around and buy in the off months and you might even beat $109

Put hand warmers in your sleeping bag at the foot and they'll stay warm all night.

Pine adds a bad taste but ur going to cook on piss smelling cotton wood. Maybe I'm wrong but that seems backwards. Youneed some good cedar or juniper for cooking

You didn’t invite me 🥺.I would get a tent built for the colder temps yours looks like a summer tent but I get it I wouldn’t buy a winter tent if I lived in the desert though I hear it does get cold at night there.

To stay warm at night take a rock from your fire ring, wrap it in a towel of coat and put it in the bottom of your sleeping bag. warm all night.

im sure it helps retain heat, i mane look at mammals, their fur is on the outside but it helps keep them warm.

Don't sleep in the same clothes as you were in all day. even if you just shake them out might help. I have never winter camped, I have worked in Seismic camps in Northern
Alberta and BC almost to 60degrees latitude. Propane in a tank freezes at 55c below. I used to take a US army mummy bag with me. I unfolded it against the wall and when the furnaces quit burning in the night, I wouldn't even wake up. just reach over and pull bag over me. you don't realise how much you sweat even in the cold. Everybody that owned bushpac boots bought them with an extra set of liners . you pull one out when you get home and put new dry ones next day. I also think you may be could have used stones from fire to keep feet warm, that's just an opinion, i have never tried it

This goes to everyone who tells me I don’t need a Swiss Army Knife, because I‘m in a office. 1. Just wrong, but we all know that 2. I‘m currently not in a office, but I‘m doing office stuff 3. You need a blade (open letters, packages, apples, or an a**h*ol* of a zip tie) and scissors all the time 4. I‘m now using the pliers of my Victorinox Cybertool M/34 (I think the Cybertool 34 or 41 or Lite offers the best option in a 91 mm SAK) to get the staples out of some 50 pages thick documents. And to bend the new staples in place after I removed some pages.
