As a Taiwanese American, I totally agree with you for standing up and defending yourself when the harassment occur or when stalkers are following you. Taiwanese culture of encouraging people to be humble and low-key is really good but it somewhat negatively results people's lack of self-confidence. Even you are a foreigner living in Taiwan, Don't be discouraged nor shy to ask for help. Simply call the police line 110 or ask people around you for help whenever you encounter any difficult or unusual situations. Most Taiwanese are very willing to stand up to help any foreigners and anyone. Taiwan's takeout culture is ridiculously nice. Cheap, Delicious and full of variety of good food. Most importantly about this takeout culture, it helps Taiwanese to save good amount of time from cooking and the afterwards dishwashing. On the other hand, in the U.S, we need to pay tax and tip for takeout or eat-out. Over a long period of time, these extra expense will add-up to a huge amount of expense. Every country has its pros and cons. It's amazing to see how quickly you adapt the Taiwanese culture. Maybe after you spend little more time living in Taiwan, you will find your own balance enjoying and embracing many more things about this beautiful island, Taiwan. Congratulation for finding one of the most beautiful hidden gems (Taiwan) in the world. Stay safe and stay awesome !

From my experiences in the US, which I got harassed in the street often, I feel for any Taiwanese guy that may stalk me haha. I am ready for almost anything because I've had to stand up for myself in many uncomfortable situations in the US -- but you're right! People here would always be of help. As for food, the takeout here is great, so well priced. Coming from the US you feel a little spoiled because you do save lots of money and time! Something we can't do in the States unless you are loaded $$
When a house or an apartment is just completed, it almost always includes a kitchen in Taiwan. The reason why you don't see a kitchen in a house is generously because the house has been refurbished and rented to several tenants. You don't need a kitchen in your house and simply buy an electric pot. You can cook many dishes for your meals using the electric pot.
Yes, I used to have a small kitchen I build in Kinmen because it didn't have one, but I had extra tables and space it was easy to make. My apartment in Kaohsiung doesn't have enough space for it to be too comfy -- and there's lots of food options so I guess it's not as urgent.
I’m in Kaohsiung as well, and I moved to Taiwan about a year ago :) and honestly I’m still adjusting to the differences between living in America and living in Taiwan lol

I was so annoyed that there was no kitchen in dormitory in school when I was studying in an university. I understand that feeling. So I could only cooked secretly with a mini electric pot in our room in dormitory (Taiwanese cooking lover here👋

Hahahah, I used to rage a lot on my scooter and bike in Kinmen because it was the only safe time for me to express anger! As long as we aren't hurting people it's probably okay because we need to let out anger somehow.
No kitchen? I am literally shocked! But when you told us the price for takeout I do understand it. It's just that here there are mainly two problems regarding takeout: there's almost no choice and it's hella expensive. If I had to live on takeout an entire day it would probably cost me around 30€. I mean I still assume that if one would buy a family home it would include a kitchen and having no kitchen at all is in like smaller apartments, but I obviously don't know since I have never been to Taiwan. So if anyone knows, let me know haha :)

I grew up in Europe and used to go back to Taiwan during summer holidays, and I was shocked to have witnessed several big couple fights (with girl crying) in middle of the street of Taipei, which i have never seen in Europe... not sure if this was just luck, but not everyone in Taiwan care about face 😅

Ahhh, yes I can see it from the influence of Japan! As for kitchens, I made a little set-up when I lived in Kinmen because I had space to do it. But my apartment in Koahsiung has no counter space so it's not as easy to make a little kitchen.

Oh man....I mean, I lived in four neighborhoods in Philly and Kensington was the most unstable one in regards to safety. It's really sad too because drug addicts are people too and aren't always threats just because of their addiction or where they live. But everywhere I went in Philly most often crazy things could happen at anytime.

Having a baseball bat with you is one of the Taiwanese culture here. People usually put it in their cars or scooters. When traffic argument or accident happens, take it and....there you go.
How do you fit a baseball bat in a scooter? hahah, that's interesting. We do the same in the US as not everyone has guns. The one time I saw someone in Taiwan use it was when I was watching drunk men fighting (and it was quite entertaining to be honest) but then the guy took out a baseball bat and I was like....nope, not entertaining anymore, this guy's ready to murder.
Yeah, I had to cut the driving part short before I lost my cool...or was it the plastic bags? I think it's okay to be honestly critical about things that are culture shocks, especially after acknowledging how great Taiwan is countless times. There's no ill intent, and I know my country is far from perfect, too. If only I could merge the two... 🤔
Taiwan wasn't so good in safety back in my childhood. I remember those posters of missing children on 7-11 walls, and a serial killer turned into a diplomatic incident. and that's just about 20 years ago. We've come a long way. And not being able to purchase a pistol at a corner store might help a bit. Amiright? And believe me when i say we are not always so nice to people as well. Especially Taiwanese in traffic. We curse a lot when we think there's no one there to hear LUL.
Hahaha, you can't buy a gun on every corner store in the US -- that's just Texas and Georgia haha (joking). But I imagine, it wasn't long ago Taiwan was under martial law and it's a young country -- yet has come along much faster in such a short time compared to the US's hundreds of years 😫 I actually get super happy when I hear Taiwanese people angrily honk their horns or if I see any verbal feud I just enjoy it because I miss people being aggressive hahah. As long as no one is actually hurt of course.
I just miss American(including international) food haha, everything else is fine for me. And I guess I would say Taiwan is a little boring. Not much Taiwan in Taiwan, very westernized and commercialized. Very different from a place like Thailand or even Japan. I feel like Taiwan hates its own identity, it doesn't like anything traditional except for a few temples
Haahah I do miss the food in the US -- soo many options. Taiwanese food is great, but if you want certain foods it's like a hunt. Go visit Kinmen, it's technically China, but under Taiwan's military since the war. I think you'll find lots of traditional spaces -- it's beautiful!
I do not like anyone following behind me in Taiwan, mostly because my senses tell em I'm about to get robbed or they are staring as my ass. Are they? Not sure, but I have been followed a few times in the US and it's very uncomfortable.

Yes! Although I will say I think overall food in Taiwan is made more freshly than in the US. Yet health food is not as popular here or as easy to get.
