The AI did very, very poorly in this battle. I play mostly Shogun 2 and even though it’s easy to abuse, at least it usually doesn’t stand still and let you kill it.
I kind of wonder if CA overcorrected for how the AI is dumb in Rome. I won a battle where I sallied out in Rome a little while ago with just a general, 3 mercenary hoplites, 2 velites and 1 Cretan archers against a Pontic army of 3200. And in that, after my archers and velites took out their general and missile cavalry, my general was able to just insta-rout their archers and peltasts because the AI had been pointlessly running them around and they were exhausted. It also took nearly 1000 casualties from standing in range of the towers, and its general was killed by a tower. If the AI had been this passive in that battle, there's no way I'd have been able to win it.
I had one siege battle once where I only had 5-6 militia units in my garrison against a full stack of with siege towers and a battering ram. And for some reason, as soon as I took down the battering ram, the rest of the army just stood still while my ballista towers shot them until they broke from army losses. And that wasn't even a sally out.

Dude something hilarious happened to me as the Apache, after watching this video I decide to do a run as them for a bit of quick fun, I was quick to pick up some map Information and saw Spain was dominating as usual, then a few turns after the other European expeditions arrived New Spain went around and decided to god-damn COLLAPSE, I was confused at first when I got the notification that the faction was gone, somehow despite quickly becoming the number one faction, they went and somehow lost some decisive battles, killing off their entire leadership, now the native factions are lapping up what used to be their territory and putting my chances of winning the game at risk as one of Spain's former allies took its place and is well on its way to the quick campaign victory condition. Its somewhere between a miracle and a disaster that this actually happened.
It actually happens more often than you think, for some reason Spain doesn't seem to be able to generate a lot of family members, especially the AI. I can count on one hand the amount of times Spain AI survived to late game because of this problem
If you listen carefully while watching you can hear Cerveza y Latifondo by Bardomagno What did happen to those poor temple guards? They lack scales and a tail! They cannot be tainted by chaos, so what change them?
I think they're so passive to get around the fact the besiegers should really be rushing from their siege camp to form a line, not instantly in formation and aggressively pushing back. Not strictly relevant but I'd love to see a TW game with proper siege lines, camps etc. Maybe even design the siege lines turn by turn. A man can dream.
I mean they are bad in every game. Legend has a wh3 video up where he marches a hero into a fortress, then walks past all the enemy troops to catch the victory point. Like, lol.
To be clear, in OG RTW1 enemy units will face you when you do sally battle but because units number is very large (240 at max) in R1 you can exploit that by making enemy face you and get shot by settlement tower (they'll make long line). Dev fixed that by diminished unit number in M2TW (150 at max) and make AI get a bit far away from your settlement's tower. But the dev didn't program them (maybe an oversight) to face player when your units get outside from other than front gate (get out from left and right gate). So you can can pick them apart from left gate with missile and melee infantry and smash them from right gate by your cavalry. It's really a shame because battlefield map is huge in this game, and Dev back then kinda forgot to make AI properly in this kind of situation...
Wow, that roll up was a thing of beauty. And I like this game handled mass routing perfectly like a rout would snowball in our own history with a crumbling flank.
