7 Mistakes I Made As A Beginner Motorcycle Rider

  • Are you a new rider? I'm going to share 7 mistakes I made as a beginner motorcycle rider. These mistakes are all common, and I hope by sharing them, I can help you avoid making them yourself.
    MISTAKE 1: Not buying the right gear. When I first started riding, I didn't really know what kind of gear I needed. I ended up buying cheap leather.
    MISTAKE 2: Buying all black gear. Black gear is great for looking cool, but it's not so great for being visible to other drivers. If you're going to be riding at night or in low-visibility conditions, make sure you wear bright-colored gear.
    MISTAKE 3: Not using both brakes. When I first started riding, I only used the rear brake. This was a mistake, because the rear brake doesn't provide as much stopping power as the front brake. If you want to stop quickly, you need to use both brakes.
    MISTAKE 4: Stalling the bike. Stalling the bike is a common mistake for beginner riders. It happens when you don't give the engine enough gas when you're taking off. If you stall the bike, don't panic. Just restart it and try again.
    MISTAKE 5: Forgetting to downshift. When you're slowing down, it's important to downshift gears. This will help you slow down smoothly and prevent the engine from stalling.
    MISTAKE 6: Bad foot placement. Your feet should be placed on the footpegs, not on the ground. If you put your feet down while you're riding, you could lose control of the bike.
    MISTAKE 7: Forgetting the kickstand. This is a mistake that I still make sometimes. When you're parking your bike, make sure you put the kickstand down before you get off. If you don't, the bike could fall over.

    I used reflective tape on the back of my helmet in the shape of a smiley face. I figure it helps them see me at night and it makes them smile. Putting drivers in a good mood seems like an extra safety measure.

    Something our family and friends do is look in that mirror before we ride and remind ourselves, what we’re doing is dangerous. It keeps us from getting complacent and oddly helps us relax.

    Welcome to the world of motorcycles. I've been riding since I was a kid.. 40+ years. Couple of little tips.. gloves with gel palm to absorb vibration(very important for long trips) and always carry some zip ties with you (they come in handy). The spring for my jiffy/kick stand came off one time while on a 4 hr trip (don't know how) but then the stand was dragging the ground and causing major issue.. if I had a zip tie I could have fixed temporary. Don't leave home without a couple. Have fun!

    New rider here.. one thing to add also, not so much a mistake but more of to relax and breathe. I rode my bike to work for the first time on 4 different highways!!! and I was nervous and stalled at every light on the streets. I was too nervous and was in my head! But made it home safely.

    I just started to. Now I watch the digital rev counter. When I'm at the lights or an interaction. & there's cars behind me. When I'm at 11: to 12 hundred rpm. My bikes ready to excelerate off the line, I thought if I can operate machinery onsites, I can ride this easy. Confidently. & more important watching TH-cam hacks. Thankyou guys n girls 👍

    I remember my first "crash" (really just a city speed tip over), I was so panicky and shaky, I've spent like 5 minutes on the side of the road trying to start the bike back, only because the kickstand was out

    To add on to downshifting, learn to downshift as you're braking! Not only helps you stop quicker, but you don't need to get on the brakes as hard to slow yourself down. Let the engine help you out a bit :)

    I really do need to upgrade my "fashion leather" too. Couple things I learned in the past few years not taught in the msf course: First, the idea or concept of not fully releasing the front brake going into turns, aka "trail braking", and/or just the idea of how to brake in a turn. You need to know how to do this if you overshoot your entry speed, in blind decreasing radius curves, if a deer jumps out, etc. Second, the importance of using the friction zone, dragging the rear brake if necessary, and keeping the rpm up so you won't stall and drop the bike trying to do low speed tight maneuvers, especially with a really top heavy bike like my fjr 1300.

    What helps with over pressure to the front brake is to use one finger. It's helped me tremendously. You go girl! Enjoy be safe!

    Also as a experienced rider for many years both street and track there is always more stuff to learn. I highly recommend taking all the advance course you can. the more knowledge the better rider you will be no matter the skill level.

    One of the things that I do to help learn shifting. Since the travel distance to the next gear is different for each bike.
    In a garage/ parking lot/ driveway.
    1: Swing leg over and sit
    2: Turn key on
    3: Do not start bike.
    4: Put bike in first gear
    4: Keeping your head and eyes up. (Think of being out on the road and you are not able to look down)
    6: Without looking at instrument panel
    7: Pull in clutch
    8: Shift up
    9: Am I in second or am I in neutral?
    10: Now look down. Check to see which one
    11: Look back up
    12: Shift up twice
    13: Am I now in 3rd or 4th gear?
    14: Check which one.
    Practice up shifting and down shifting
    The whole idea is to learn which gear you are in without having to look at instrument panel. Taking your eyes off could lead to getting hurt or hurting someone else.

    Seems we have really good classes in Belgium as I drive only for one month and I am very lucky to say they teach you all those. I was expecting more like actual driving mistakes like how to lean and downshift in turns. But happy you made this video if not taught in other countries! Its a really enjoyable video to watch 😊❤

    just a quick note on the kickstand. Most bikes won't start with the kickstand down if you're in gear. If it's in neutral and the kickstand is down you should be able to start it no problem.

    I agree with all your comments. If you can't afford the good gear you shouldn't buy the bike. When you hit the road (not if because no matter what you do some other fool might hit you) that's all there is between you and the road. All black looks cool but no one can see you. As for braking all of the energy of the bike and the weight is transferred to the front wheel so it makes perfect sense to apply the front brake just don't grab it or squeeze it too hard. That's why ABS is such a good thing. Ride carefully and enjoy the ride.

    Yes while wearing all black certainly looks cool it is not only warmer in the sun it makes you much harder to see. While my pants and gloves are black my jacket is a light gray and my helmet is white. Doing research I found white is the number one color helmet for visibility even over high vis (unless riding during the winter. But why would you?). Getting a tinted visor can also help with lowering the helmet temps

    just FYI, engine breaking is basically rear wheel braking as the engine pulls on the chain which is attached to the rear wheel. In some bike engines architectures, you could lock up the rear tire on a slippery ground, just by engine breaking because it's so strong. It did happen to me once. And unlike a break which you can always let go to gain traction, with engine breaking it's a little bit more complicated as you need to be more aware to pull the clutch in or even add gas.

    I've been riding for almost 3 years (which is not that long I know) and I STILL accidentally do a couple of these lmao. It's less of a big deal now but I know when you're a fresher rider, doing this stuff can feel like the end of the world and it's easy to get stuck in your head about it. This is a really great video that would have helped me a lot a couple years ago-I know it will help someone else! Such good content, keep it going!!! Love to see it.

    Be careful, when the first near miss happens learn everything you did wrong and what can be improved.
    I was told that riding a motorcycle is an art form. Meaning you never get good at it, just better.
    I know when my first near accident a car was primarily in the wrong but as I told people that story I soon realized how I could make that near miss into an easy miss. I have about one every year due to the drivers around me. But its always good to watch videos online and even the graphic ones to learn of the side effects of bad decisions.
    I can't speak for women but men have a tough time calming that urge to go fast or to do something risky.l to get that adrenaline.
    Just remember to always keep yourself upright. Treat your bike like a spouse and she'll treat you better in return.

      @@RidewithRea I'm using the "Loop Experience" ear plug. They are so comfy and allow you to still hear music via your Cardo since they are tuned to the frequency of wind noise. Unlike foam which blocks all frequencies.

    I’ve been riding for about 8 years and I’ve just added drone lights to the under carriage of my bike for added visibility.Good idea for night riding! I’ve even seen riders stick them to the side of their helmets. Looks kinda cool also! Can Velcro these things to just about anything.Super cheap and affective.

      Meaning LED lighting? Some newer companies add an extra wire, so you can pigtail it into your brake light, meaning no matter what color you choose, they all turn red, when you you use front or rear brakes. I've frosted my windscreen, and added LED lights near the bottom, giving a very diffused glow. But I also ride with my LED lights on 24/7 REMARKABLE difference in visibility, even during day time....especially when I tap my brake lights 4 or 5 times in about a second, and they flash from whatever color, to red. Catches the eye, and cars pulling out STOP. ( For an example, look at my avatar, about the diffused windscreen glow)

    35 years of riding, a couple years it was my only transportation and I have taken many multi thousand mile trips. Often running 750 to 1000 miles in a day.
    Back when I started riding gear was pretty limited for street use. Boots first, then gloves, helmet if you felt like it and heavy leather jacket when you could afford it, that was it. I never really felt the need for much more. I added a real helmet a few years ago because the wind started bothering my eyes and I needed the face shield. Getting old I guess. This year I have added a riding shirt with armor which I really like and a pair of riding pants so I guess after 35 years I am finally fully dressed for riding.
    Point is nowadays people are getting way to obsessed with having all this extra stuff before you can ride.
    Seriously, just ride man.

    I started riding like 3 weeks ago maybe 3 and a half weeks ago got a gsxr 600 2005 I love it I learned to ride it no license plate gear insurance nothing didn't drop it once almost crashed the 2nd day going a bit too fast into a corner but I learned to countersteer from that experience so was a win in that instance I actually got really lucky my stabilizer was not screwed in and I was going through the Twisties near my crib for a week fast asf my buddy said it could have locked up and killed me so I replaced it as quickly as possible had to re tighten it every day before my ride tho for a week I got lucky my buddy noticed hes the one that test rode it when I bought it too and took it to 120 mph could have killed him and he's got 2 kids couldn't believe someone would sell a bike with a issue like that

    Duck feet is only bad when your footpegs are too low, and sometimes you need to shift up through left-hand turns, but you can't because your pegs are too low to the ground. In my opinion, a lot of problems with duck feet is with consumers; they could simply refuse to buy motorcycles that place their footpegs to low for the safe operation of this vehicle.

    If your head light is not wired to be on always when you're bike is running then turn it on each time you ride {day and night}

    hoping most sincerely new riders start small and not only take the basic msf, but practice an take the additional courses. riding since I was 6 (50cc) we laughed at the beginning of bike courses they were like 30 dollars an one saturday afternoon ride around cones bring your bike. we thought who doesnt know how to ride a bike?. who would buy a bike thats never ridden a bike?. ik.
    an now I believe we need to progress to some sort of tier system limiting first bikes to brand new riders. because a 600 nowadays is dang racing bike ready for the road which is not a track 186mph an no experience riders can buy that or worse, anytime they want. watch YT? me too. agree?.

    there's plenty of nice looking gear that isn't black and if you don't feel like wearing hi-vis you can always use reflective tape on a backpack

    That's a great video! I also imagined the black everything issue when I first thought of biking, I was more concerned about being seen in the day and more so the sun roasting me! 😱Lol. People in my mfs course also used the rear brake as a foot rest, which was not ok lol, I didn't notice if I was one of them but I surely made sure I didn't do it after they said it 😂

    1 ride in dirt 1 yr before ever getting on street. If you are not 100% comfortable on bike and using controls are not total instinct, street will kill you. make those mistakes in dirt where cars and trucks will not crush you. After that add your 7 and I could add 20 more but it took me 40 plus yrs riding to figure them out so I will not waste the time. Only other thing go take a real riding course beginners race class, things they teach will make you safer and faster. then gain experience off hrs with as little traffic as possible and not at night until you are better.     You should really buy over the wrist gloves.
    If not, you will get a pretty bad sunburn after a day long riding.
    Short gloves are for the look only

    This might be a weird question but I just got a motorcycle and when I take it out to practice, my helmet gets soaked from sweat; it's pretty gross.
    Once I get the hang of it I'd like to take it places socially and you know, not be disgusting when I show up.
    I'm in Florida and it's almost July now...any advice? Other than wait until it gets cooler? I'd really like to use it to get around soon.
    Maybe it's just a bad helmet that's not ventilated well enough?

    I might add , if your front wheel is not straight and you apply the front brake , you will go down like a rock.

      Yes!!! Good point! applying the front brake on a turn is instant pavement to the face 😅 I remember that tip from the MSF course to always straighten your from wheel before applying front brake.

      Getting rear ended is one of the highest causes of accidents. Leave your bike in gear, ready to go. Practice fast take-offs. Your hand will be just fine.

      I do this too sometimes because my clutch hand starts cramping on longer rides lol but like someone else said it might be safer to be in 1st gear in case you have to make a quick getaway.

      @@RidewithRea Rea oh Rea. Don’t make that a habit, unless you want a green light lol. Every time I hit N the magic light happens. Someone next to me asked why I got way to the left and so close. About 15 seconds later a car behind slammed breaks and missed me by inches. No further explanation was required. Anyway, your doing great. Stay relaxed, smile and have fun.

    Me, with 6 years experience watching this like "better make sure I don't make these mistakes", knowing full well I've already made them all. All black gear and black bikes is what everyone has, it's how most bikes and gear comes; but really quickly you'll realize you're a ghost at night, but worse is the heat. The sun reminds you everyday how stupid you are for buying all black gear, a black bike, and then sitting in traffic. Cheap gear is also something we all do, but until you've had expensive gear you don't realize the difference. That $500 helmet really is way more comfortable and cooling then the $100 helmet, and the reason that summer jacket costs $300 is because it uses magic to fully protect while giving the illusion you're naked so you don't overheat.

    Before getting my license I'm going through all material online.. so.. Friction zone is different for every bike and it varies? Did I get it wrong or?

      Friction varies from bike to bike, but the concept is the same.
      You want to do practice exercise so you develop a “feel” for it in muscle memory thru repetition (both accelerating and decelerating).
      Motos use engine braking much more than other vehicles do.
      This means that rolling off the throttle to slow down is routinely used before braking or instead of braking (ie thru turns).
      Smooth operation of the clutch when downshifting to aid in slowing or stopping the bike is critical.
      Dumping the clutch on a downshift will likely cause the rear wheel to lose traction and skid.
      No bueno at high speed thru the twisties, or making a turn.
      A good exercise for learning the friction zone is to set up the bike at the bottom of a steep driveway, and practice letting the clutch out while increasing throttle at the same time.
      Then pull the clutch in and roll back to level.
      Just a few feet forward and rolling back will do it. You can do it with both feet hovering on the ground, not on the pegs.
      On a level, just practice letting the clutch out in 1st gear, with no, or very little throttle, then pull the clutch in, and repeat till you get the feel of it.

      You also want to adjust the clutch lever so you can get the first knuckle from your finger tip over the lever on your index and middle fingers.
      When you’re riding the bike, your index and middle fingers should always be resting on too of the clutch lever (ready to pull it), and your pinky and ring finger on the grip.

    Question, now that you know all this, do you think it could be better to get the 500 over the 300 as beginner rider?

      Hi! It’s definitely personal preference. I knew for a fact that I would eventually want to upgrade to a bigger bike once I learned how to ride so I figured getting the 300 would be less expensive and easier to learn on. Also, where I live it’s very rare to find rebels at dealerships so at the time I wanted to buy my bike they just so happened to have this 300 and I loved it. I felt if I got the 500 I probably wouldn’t feel the need to upgrade. As a beginner, they are both so similar and both great bikes to learn on. If you don’t plan on upgrading then the 500 is perfect.

      You might think that you’ll be staying with your first bike for a long time, but my experience in talking with many mc riders, is that you will want to bump up in displacement, and also perhaps to a different type of bike, as your preferences develop.
      Sport, cruiser, naked, dual sport, adventure, tourer.
      Expect your mind to change on this one as you get more into riding.
      Rea made a great choice for her first bike, and bought used, so when she moves up, she won’t be taking a new bike cost hit when she sells it.

    Forgetting to pull in the clutch when you come to a stop? Never heard that one but easy to see it could happen once you said it. A friend of mine came to a stop at a light after a long ride and forget to put his foot down once. Hopefully that will be enough of that.
    You did good here, your humility was appropriate and message spot on. My only suggestion is that; Taking the MSF course should be the number one thing you do, even if you don't have a bike yet. You ride their bikes and I think they cover everything you brought out here to some extent. The 2.5 days MSF training was a bit like drinking from a fire hose but the real learning is in the practice. MSF makes it so much easier to get you license in most states too.
    I thought I was the only one who thought black riding gear is unwise. (actually I think it's absurd but didn't want to put words in your mouth) Cooled down to 103 today in N. Nevada.
    A 1k per day U-turn regimen is beyond extraordinary. Hat tip to you.

    Always dress for the slide not the ride. Wear only motorcycle gear and usually you can find it cheap used.

    heres a tip kind a pet peeve with me. visors up all the time.. wheres ur eye protection?. doh. the tiniest bug or dirt against a eyeball I S N O T G O O D Feeling.
    AND its no eye protection ticket if cops a prick an they like us alot uknow that already.

    Your advice about braking is completely backwards. You should primarily use your front brake and use your rear brake to compliment the front not the other way around.

    I live in south flori..duh and have always worn short sleeve pocket t-shirts and BDU shorts riding my 94 honda goldwing 1500. You can't wear any protective clothing unless it is an astronaut's air conditioned suite. It is too boiling hot in the summer months and the winters are perfect. and no, I did not watch the video. Not interested in your pretty face and whatever. 😁 I wondered what had happened to you a few months ago when you first started to learn.

    Riding without “proper” gear isn’t a mistake, it’s a choice. Same as riding a motorcycle period. Most people will say it’s a mistake and dangerous. Dangerous yes, mistake? No, just a choice.

      Nice video. I made most of those mistakes, except for the black gear. I’ve always bought white helmets and light colored jackets for the reasons you mentioned-visibility and heat reduction. But, I only ride at night if I have to. Bought a hi-vis vest for wearing with my rain gear, which, I unfortunately bought in black (I wasn’t thinking that day). Nice work, keep it up!
