  • Manor Lords is the most highly anticipated city-builder in years, and today we're going to tackle the most challenging scenario available! The "On the Edge" challenge is absolutely brutal, forcing you to adapt to an early winter, appease extremely demanding serfs, and survive ruthless raider attacks... all within the first year of the game, with no starting weapons for defense. This scenario will push you to your limits, but never fear! I've developed a strategy that can give you a fighting chance at survival!

    @Pravus Couple of tips. 1. Removing the trees does stop berry bushes from growing, avoid cutting near them. 2. If you stockpile some planks you can upgrade one house to level 2 to produce a bunch of warbows, then demolish the house to get a quick and cheap militia. (72 warbows is enough for 2 full units of archers and you're not likely to need more then that ever.) A single unit of archers and your starting retinue are enough to both see off the raiders and kill off bandit camps provided you use a little tactics, and a single bandit camp can have less then 20 wealth or more then 200. So if you can get the archers armed by the next winter you can spend it bandit hunting, keep the wealth for yourself, and upgrade your retinue that way. 3. Upgrading the hitching post to a stable would let you buy another ox and speed up construction and plank production significantly. 4. The tax for personal wealth actually comes out of *region wealth* . So it's not worth taxing the region until your people are rich, then hit them hard for a single month before removing the tax again. You set up that 10% tax when the region wealth is 23 silver and you're only getting 2 silver for a 9 point approval hit, not worth it. 5. Eggs are broken as a food source, they start generating instantly when you upgrade the house, generate year round, and don't take a family to work them while giving you another food source.

    A quick tip picked up from other comments!
    Two things to keep in mind about Markets:
    1) Apparently, the Market teleports goods to houses instantly, and distributes them based on closest first.
    2) Families DO NOT need to visit the market to get their supplies, instead, you should place he Market as close to your Storehouse/Production buildings as possible.

    Funfact: The region 'Immenreuth' you live in has in German the meaning of 'Immen' (old word for bees) and Reuth is a 'Rodung' or (manmade) clearing. So the region would be called 'Bee Clearing'...
    So maybe it's the games way to tell you to plaster the region with apieries like you did in Farthest Frontier :D

    Hurrah! More Manor Lords! This game does look superbly promising.
    I disagree on the nature of trade, this is medieval trade we’re talking about here, certainly there should be *some* situations where it’s profitable to import, refine then export, it did happen and major trade hubs were formed, but on the whole at the manorial level we’re talking about subsistence agriculture supporting a very small artisan class, so anything that could be sourced locally might be viable for export, and where a nearby (I.E owned by you or a friendly Lord on map, IMO) village had a strong surplus or raw or part-stage refined materials, then there absolutely would be room for intermediate stage processing. But while I fully agree the current trade rates are far too punishing even for that - essentially nothing is favourable and for the effort put in to refine a product you simply don’t get much of a return, and all the effects of supply/distance seem to be tied up in a single up front cost, that should be a much lower level on-going cost to sustain the route, IMO, I do not agree that you should regularly expect to be able import from the ‘off map’ market and then export for a profit, importing from the off-map market should be an intermediate stage until you have an on-map resource. But I also think that limiting the total resources in any of the poofs, as is done for non-renewable sources, is not very in-theme for the setting. Sure, medieval people did exhaust local resources, but often not in the years-to-decades timescale shown by the game, or if they did, new ones could often be found, with effort.
    You mention resenting trading and trying to be self-sufficient as possible - for the basics of life, that absolutely should be the case for a manorial economy. Remember, it’s the inefficiency of such an economy (as opposed to classical era slave driven agriculture, which was more ‘efficient’ in its way) that both encourages feudalism and massively cuts out the ability of a people to support middle-tier artisans, or indeed places support of the warrior class at the pinnacle of many such societies.
    Better Deals is totally broken for both the setting and the game. Simple as.

    You do this so well. I love city building games, but some of the mechanics in them frustrate me because i dont instinctively get them and it takes me forever to figure the best way of playing with them. This usually makes me not like to continue the game cause i keep failing. People like urslef help me tremendously . Please keep it up and have fun!❤

    Alright few things.
    1. #fucktrading it makes the is challenge way too easy.
    2. The better way to do this without trading is your first 2 plots are long backyard double plots and you drop down chickens and veggies the second they are up. Veggies scale off long backyards but chickens dont but you just do both for ease of putting down (really should do all 5 double plots for the start and move them off once 3 and the first 2 extensions are done then go back to them after the church). This allows you to when spring comes put 4 different types of food on the market (5 if you take honey which isn’t the best but you do it for the food variety buff).
    3. You want someone on berries the second spring starts and they start regrowing. Berries aren’t a set amount, they are always regrowing until they disappear. Having 1 person out there immediately gets a different food type on the market for increased approval. With rich berries, you keep 1 out there all the time, keep an eye on for when it’s about 75% filled, then dump 3 people into it until it’s depleted. Rinse and repeat for a ton of food.
    3. You want to keep the 2 Level 2 houses. Ideally you’ll get 5 total for the level 4 settlement perks which is very easy to attain. With your 10 left over gold you can get a cobbler and a blacksmith to immediately start pumping out spears. The other 2 are a jointer and a fletcher. Once you are able to smash the bandit camps you can upgrade the 5th to tailor because you can buy some sheep. It’s very easy to get at least a 36 spear 18 archer army by the first raid. You want to get the spears made asap to take out the bandit camps when you have 16 spears and shields.
    4. The happiness penalty for not having the tavern is extremely easy to overcome with 4 food variety (again 5 with honey), 2 types of clothes (leather and shoes) and a level 2 church. All of that will keep you well above 50 to recruit a family a month.
    Trading is such a massive crutch in this game and it trivializes this challenge completely

    Actually, I saw it is possible to get a retinue with far more than 12, as you can get around the maximum of 1 tower. I don't fully remember, but I believe it was as simple as clicking again after the message says the maximum is reached, and then it works anyway lol
    Naturally this is an exploit and I would assume it will get fixed, but it is pretty hilarious to be able to "take a walk" with an army of 300+ of your personal retinue like your Leonidas as depicted by the movie 300 lmao, particularly cause you can kit them out very strongly

  • @philc3912
    @philc3912 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Always upgrade the peasant tents to workers camp asap, this removes the homeless penalty and the starting 5 families will live in there until you delete it (forever if you want). This also means the first burgages you build will start attracting new families immediately as the starting 5 do not move into these burgages as they complete.

    In the era that this game takes place in, alcoholic beverages actually were safer to consume than well or stream water. That said, humanity has been fermenting since forever, so the game shouldn't be so strict on what you're allowed to brew.

    I have to agree with your assessment of the trade goods mechanic in this game. Raw materials will always be cheaper than refined goods produced with the raw materials. Importing lets say wood will always be cheaper than importing furniture. Importing lets say rare earth will always be cheaper than importing a smartphone. I do not know which developer thought the trade system is ok with the type of logic where you run at a loss if you import raw materials and export refined goods. Either this is an incomplete feature, which is totally understandable as the game is in early access, or someone has low understanding of basic economcs.

    Good stuff there, very helpful. I think the taxation is 10% of regional wealth per month, so actually when you have low regional wealth its probably not worth the approval hit. I'd like to understand why you didn't discuss archers for the militia? I'd think the retinue can hold the brigands away from the archers who could then move to the flank and avoid friendly fire issues.

    • @Dyanosis
      @Dyanosis หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There are still going to be friendly fire issues. Arrows don't just magically fall short of your allies because they're behind the enemy. Many times, those arrows fly too far and still hit people behind our target.

    Oh Pravus, you need the ancient mind set. No one is taking carts of base resources and lugging them across the country for limited money. You can't import base resources in a medieval village. You need to gather the base resources locally and export the finished goods. You make this mistake in all medieval settlement games. Base resources are silly expensive to import, and worthless to export, in medieval games. Because that's what real life is like.
