I'm only 35 seconds in and I love this video.. love seeing how happy your daughter was when you asked them if they were excited ..reminds me of how my daughter was at that age!
Great video. Stumbled on your video with interest as we lived on Barron Canyon Rd for many yrs and our youngest son is a Warden in that area of the park and works out of Achray.
I’m doing this route as my first solo. The campsite setup is making me a bit nervous but I’m going the first weekend of May so I should have better luck. (Hoping lol) anyway, this video is extremely helpful so thank you big time!! Subscribed :)
Yes, it saved SO much work! 😆 The kids definitely enjoyed skipping a couple portages, but we don’t often canoe in any type of rapids, so it was a new experience for them for sure ☺️
Quite a 1st day with kids! Great job! I'm confused by the campsite mix up though. There are 2 Cascades sites and if you had agreed to stay on the 1st one then you would have passed it right after the 60m portage. They said they were taking the 2nd Cascade site which they did if fact do. Regardless you survived and luckily they let you stay with them. It's a great trip through that area!
Ya, that’s what we would have though too, but before we set off we went to the park office and went over all the sites with the Ranger. She even phoned someone to double check and showed us that the one that ended up being the second one on the Cascades and the one after (which was wrong) were both Cascades. It is weird that two sites on the same ‘lake’ are separated by 3 portages, so we just believed her. Turned out to be wrong, but thankfully it ended up all being ok! Ya, the whole trip was amazing! The kids were troopers that 1st day! 😆
Hey, we went at the beginning of August. The weather was great (some rain) and we were glad to have lots of bug spray! You can book as soon far as 5 months ahead and I'd recommend booking as soon as you can to make sure you get the sites you want. We booked only a couple months ahead of time, but there was very little left by then.
Somehow the TH-cam algorithm suggested this, finally a suggestion that makes sense. As a single parent of 3 kids under 8 I’m always on the lookout for family oriented channels. You got a new subscriber. What was the canoe you used for this trip? Was it a 17, or 18 foot? Are you happy with it? I’m looking to buy a canoe for similar trip and have been debating between the swift, nova craft and souris river
Hey! Thanks for the follow! Our canoe is a 16 foot Swift Algonquin. We absolutely love it! It’s light, durable and sturdy. Perfect for trips like this. I’ve heard good things about Souris River too.
@@AdventuresWithTheHills that was only a 16 foot with 3 seats? Wow. I may have to reconsider what I was thinking. I was always told I’d need to go 17 or bigger. Do you feel squished with all 4 of you in there? How much gear can you reasonably hold and for how long many days with your set up?
Hey, if you're looking for a map, this route is called Barron/Achray. We started at the Achray campground on Grand Lake and paddled through to Squirrel Rapids. Unfortunately it's not a loop, we went with friends and left one vehicle at the end/one at the beginning. The flow is light enough that some people just paddled back up the rivers/lakes if they didn't have a second vehicle/transportation back to camp.
Thankfully it was the only time we’ve experienced something like this and everything worked out in the end, but it was concerning for a bit there 😬 I guess there are always things that don’t go as planned while adventuring and it’s good to just go with the flow 😊
Love to see young families enyoying the outdoors. Another great video, Guys!
Nice trip guy's, that's a great area, looks like the kid's had so much fun.
It seems that every time I canoe Stratton Lake the wind is against me..going there and coming back. Fun video in an amazing area.

Thank you for your lovely comment! It sure is wonderful seeing their joy, isn’t it?!

always great see kids go exploring, it grounds them to a different world then cement and concrete.

This was such a cute video! Going to Algonquin next week for the first time, found this video to be very helpful, and entertaining
😅
Thank you!! 🥰 We hope you have an amazing time!!
Hopefully later in life the children can learn to appreciate running rapids. That saved you quite a bit of work.

Great adventure.
Thanks! It’s such a cool place!
Did someone from the park drop off your car to your destination?
Watching in 2024
Hey! Thanks for watching! Fellow BICers here :)
Great video! what time of the year did you guys plan this trip?

I would love to do this with my kids. How old are yours?
It was a really great route to do with the kids. There were lots of portages, but none of them were too long. Our kids were 6 & 8 when we went.
what loop would this be called on maps?
