  • Why do some people seem totally fearless when it comes to chasing huge goals? Why don’t the obstacles every day people face stop them?
How do YOU get from where you are to where you want to be? (No matter how impossible it may seem!)
    The answer is: your self-image.
Zig Ziglar says the level of your self-image has a direct correlation between your confidence and level of achievement.
Five years ago, when I first began the journey of my own personal development, I was overwhelmed by all the “self-help” information out there. Where was I supposed to start? What was I supposed to focus on? What would give me the biggest ROI in helping me overcome anxiety and a terrible self-esteem?
When I made studying self-image my #1 priority, EVERYTHING changed.
The reason why I was stuck in life was because of how I saw myself: I believed that people didn’t like me. I thought I was an awkward person, therefore I wasn’t worthy of love. The idea of taking higher levels of action TERRIFIED me because all I could think about was how I was going to fail.
I learned to turn that all around by raising my self-image. Two years ago, one of my mentors gave a training on this that changed my life:
    1. Know where you’re going.
Have big goals, or goals that stretch you. If you know you’re going for bigger things, you’ll respect yourself more. And when you start achieving them, your self-image will go up because you’ll start thinking to yourself, “Wow. If I could do THAT, I can do this even bigger thing!” And your confidence goes up. And you take more action. And you achieve more. And your self-image goes up in an upward spiral. This is why the rich get richer, why they seem to keep achieving more and more in life.
    2. Root your self-image in a constant.
I used to base my self-image off two things: 1) other people’s opinions of me 2) my performance. If someone rejected me, suddenly, it would destroy my whole day. I would spend days, or even weeks, worrying over the fact that not everybody liked me. Additionally, if I had a social interaction where I wasn’t 100% perfect, i.e. if I stuttered, or my neck spasmed, or I felt uncomfortable in my own skin, I would beat myself up over it. This was why over the years my anxiety was getting even worse!
I think a lot of people go through similar loops. But when you start basing your self-image on something external circumstances or even your own emotional state can’t touch, that’s when you become invincible. That’s when you find personal freedom.
    What is that “constant”?
The knowledge that you were created by God, the universe, a higher power, whatever you want to call it, and that it created you in love. The universe IS love (see Rhonda Byrne, The Power). It loves you more than you could ever imagine. You weren’t an accident. You were created with a purpose, and to fulfill a purpose-the calling in your life. That’s bigger than anyone’s opinion of you, including your own!
Once you let these two things sink in, see how your self-image grows exponentially…and you’ll start overcoming things you never dreamed you could.
