I played this at my first husband's funeral. Initially I was informed the preacher refused to play it, which I knew he had just saw the artist's name and said no without listening. Of course I immediately responded the service will be held elsewhere, I wasn't folding. In the end he folded, and after the service numerous people repeatedly asked the preacher the name of the song and artist because it brought everyone to tears. I know my husband loved every moment he had to utter the words Metallica! 🤟❤

I love this song. I love the whole era of Load, Reload, Garage Inc, and S&M. Tons of experimental stuff going on and it's all awesome to me. Too bad a lot of fans didn't appreciate this era very much. I don't know, I like it when artists switch up their style sometimes and don't allow themselves to be boxed in. True artists are able to effectively cross genres. It shows their depth of knowledge of music. That isn't always the case of course. Sometimes they just sellout for the money or are forced to by a label or something crappy like that, but I don't feel like that's what was going on with Metallica. This era was about growing as artists and musicians (and frankly just having fun), and I think they did a lot of that in the 90s.

Absolutely love when artists experiment with different sounds and styles, they create so much more that way. The fans that don’t appreciate it are the same people that would’ve gotten bored and complained about Metallica doing the same thing for so many years.
I’m so happy they don’t give a shit about what people think, they do what they do for themselves and the people who enjoy it.

Love Low Man's Lyric. Metallica got a lot of criticism for TBA and more so for Load/Re-load. But I do appreciate if artists keep looking for ways to express themselves honestly instead of repeating the formula that got them success.

I love this song 💕 this whole album is so underrated. I believe this song is about James Hetfield’s mom. I think she died when he was a young teenager. And it to me shows as he’s growing up, he wishes he wouldn’t have taken his mom for granted. Such a beautiful song. And I’m not much a country fan but I do absolutely love this song. I think Lexi would like from this album Outlaw Torn. This album isn’t full thrash but I love the Load album. 💕

YES!!! Great example of Metallica's musical versatility!!! Check out more of their great songs from the Load album- Hero Of The Day; Until It Sleeps; The Outlaw Torn; Bleeding Me 🤘

I never got appeal of this song but i came from The Black Album (my introduction to Metallica), then each album in reverse order.
They Load/Re-Load albums had some great power ballads/ballads, Unforgiven II, Bleeding Me, Low Mans Lyric, The Outlaw Torn.
I think my issue with this song is the Heart analogy (is it an analogy?)..I'm a very literally minded person so saying Heart in a song that doesn't actually have anything to do with a heart can annoy me (not always)

I grew up with the eighties Metallica and those albums were the reason I started playing guitar and making music. But today if I had to choose one Metallica album to listen to I'd choose Load. Yes there are loads (pun intended) of songs on that album that are nowhere near classics but for example *Bleeding Me* is one of my favourite Metallica songs ever.

I'm pretty much the same, I started out with 80's Metallica as well, but Load is still my second favorite album of theirs, behind the Black Album. I love Bleeding Me, Hero of the Day, The Outlaw Torn, and so many of the songs on that album.

I get James on a level beyond music. We all grow up with something that molds us,his was religion, mine was an evil stepfather who broke our family.
I guess that is what drew me to Metallica. Thigs their songs are about mirror my youth quite closely. Yes even the dark thigs.

@Brad & Lex This song is about James Hetield's mother who died from cancer when he was just 16. Both of his parents were Christian Scientists which is basically a religion where you don't believe in doctors or medicine and you rely on your faith to fix whatever's ailing you. James was exempted from health class as well as getting checkups because his parents religion.

Hetfield has always been a fan of the heavier country, outlaw country, and old school country of Waylan Jennings, for example. He got this from his dad, Virgil.

Metallica didn't change into *this* sound, this was a ballad on the album, as an interesting spacer. BUT, if you want to hear the cowboy in the metal (or hard rock? dunno), check out Outlaw Torn, the last track on the album. It's a personal favourite.

First time I've heard this song of theirs, def don't remember it from the 2000 concert I went to. TH-cam is showing the video was released in 2012 so that makes sense. Then again, they got less heavy over the years so... that makes sense I guess.

Hello again. Hope all is well. I'd love to see your reaction to The Outlaw Torn. The studio version is good but the S&M (first S&M as there's now two) is superior (of course that's my opinion). That said, in order to appreciate how good it is you need to hear the original version. Basically all the S&M songs sound great to me. You already did No Leaf Clover but, even if you don't do a reaction, look at the track list and give a listen to some of the ones you've already done (with or without a reaction video). Brad will love For Whom The Bell Tolls and Master of Puppets. I'm getting around to your Battery reaction or I'd include that as well. :) Lots of love from Cali and keep on jammin.

James has said if Metallica ever broke up he was interested in making a country album for the challenge and something different for him. Assume this song stems from that. Glad they didn't break up and I don't like country but I would've liked to hear it
