    ➡️ ‪@TheOmnificBand‬ happens when you ditch the guitar player and it quickly works out in your favor! KIDDING! However, we at Low End University are obviously biased toward bass players, and this trio from Melbourne, Australia kicked it up a notch with a killer drummer and TWO bass players! To sweeten the deal, Clay Gober from Polyphia makes a filthy cameo to imprint his signature style on this groovy, harmony-driven track. In this video, I listen to The Omnific for the first time (featuring bassists Toby Peterson-Stewart and Matt Fack) and talk about their perfect blend of modern bass tones, the catchy dual melodies, their usage of great voice leading, and the slow-burn composition that builds toward a massive breakdown after Clay rips it up! I break down a few of their techniques, Clay’s hybrid pop-picking technique, and more. I want to shout from the rooftops even more about HOW full-range the bass guitar can be, as seen here. Hats off, lads! I can’t wait to hear more.

      That guest spot was gnarly. I love how it contrasted the rest of the piece - it went from really melodic, lots of melody variation on one theme, and Clay's spot almost gave it a "bridge / breakdown" feel to build into the first true "groove" section. Brilliant arranging!

Fackrell is the other bass player in this band, and him and Toby are insanely talented musicians. For some other songs of theirs to check out, I would recommend: Wax & Wane, Fountainhead, Final Tree (ft. Jacob Umansky), Scurryfunge, or Merlin's ID (which they have a live performance of it) There's too many for me to choose very well but those are some of my favorites.

But then I listened to the full albums and was blown away with the amazing composition and production. Its some very good music on its own, the twin basses concept does not seem to be forced into the music, it just feels right.

    Curious as to what's your take on that multi-scale bass: I know that bass players don't really need to be doing a lot of low fret bar chords and such but it still looks like a quite severe fan fret whenever I see these types of basses around: is it similar to how most guitarrist say they can quickly get used to even severe fan frets after just a couple hours or do you really need to pay more attention to technique on a bass which already has a pretty large scale so any changes are way moe significant?
    I also imagine that finding all of the harmonics would take quite a bit more adjustment since you always have to be more precise for those.

    • @PRESTIGEworldwide32
      @PRESTIGEworldwide32 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i have the same Dingwall that's in the video, and i never really had any issues with adjusting to the fan fret. felt great almost right away. honestly the 37 inch scale length was a little difficult to get used to physically, but that went away quickly. sometimes chords can be difficult, but nothing too serious...

    • @LowEndUniversity
      @LowEndUniversity  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've picked around on a few multi-scale basses over the years, Dingwall included. I've learned that they're all different, Dingwall being the most extreme. After a few minutes it felt natural - if I closed my eyes (which I tried), it wasn't too noticeable on just feel. I think it's just the optics of it when you look at it that make it appear to feel different, but there is certainly a small difference feel wise. I think I could get used to it.
      I remember when I got my first Warwick, and felt the same way. Warwick basses feel so different from any other brand, that it's almost the same adjustment phase. Then, at some point, everything EXCEPT my Warwicks felt foreign. Ha!

Robert Sledge has always been a huge inspiration to me as a bassist. Maybe sometime you could do "Army" on the channel? Robert does some cool stuff in that song: bends, fills, and lots of distorted pick playing to give the song some edge.
