That was planned, and if you look at the scene closely you can see the wall behind the bookcase has two small holes that would be behind the top of the bookcase. The two holes were so crew could push two metal rods through the holes, and push the bookcase over. The wall is a fake wall constructed specifically for this scene. Dan Aykroyd even explains the scene during the commentary audio on the DVD of the film.
