    Definitely the best thing you can do to pretty much ANY car is to swap in a manual. So much of a better driving experience and involvement with the roads with three pedals. I think the only thing I would note that wasn't mentioned in the video is to preload the center bearing 10mm towards the front of the car. You should also reassemble the two halves of the shaft on the same 'plane' as it was when replacing the bearing since they are balanced like this from the factory. A couple lines with a paint marker is all you need to make sure it's on the exact same splines when you reassemble it. You can get a driveline vibration without doing either of those things. Great write up, I've done a whole bunch of manual conversions and you definitely did this the correct way. Great looking and sounding shark you got there! Way to go on keeping the e24 alive! 👍😎

    • @safetythird4555
      @safetythird4555  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I actually had the driveshaft refurbished, so keeping the separate halves marked didn't apply in this situation, but great tip nonetheless. And I didn't know that about the center support bearing. Maybe I should go back under there and do that. Thanks again!

      No problem. Getting the driveshaft rebuilt on some of the older models is sometimes the only way to get rid of driveline vibrations when the guibo, center bearing, or nose bushing doesn't help. Obviously the u-joints can degrade and from rust the factory weights that are tack welded on can get pitched off. Most driveshaft shops can do European shafts but the collets that they chuck into the machine have to be able to adapt to the shaft ends. If it were an American car you could go anywhere. Thank god that people still specialize in this for that reason. These cars are getting to the age where you cant always just swap in a 'known-good" part from a recycler without it possibly being plagued with the same issues. I wouldn't worry about your CSB preload if you aren't feeling any vibration. It can be rather negligible depending on application, but if you had yours rebuilt and it isn't shaking under your butt I'm willing to bet you're all good. Definitely a good DIY for someone who is looking to do the swap. If you're like me, I won't even entertain half these cars for sale unless they are manual from the factory, or I got an automatic one for a good deal with the whole purpose of doing the swap.

    Should add that at least on my e28 the bracket that holds the gear shift assembly to the car isn't present from factory (I think all e28 autos are this way) as well as the small bracket that holds the connection between the hard and soft line that go from the master to the slave (clutch)

    • @LawrencefromIL
      @LawrencefromIL 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Juan, I think both of the brackets are present on 1985 and older E24s with automatics; not sure about E28s.

      I had heard the same thing for the shifter bracket, and actually cut it out of the donor vehicle to have for my swap, but ended up not needing it. Must've been part of the pre/post 1985 changes.

    Question I did my swap but used the stock pedal assembly without the help spring. I bled the system (still need to add a little fluid) but the clutch pedal is not returning. Is it because I need more fluid or I have to used the pedal assembly bracket from the donor car. Thanks for the help

    • @safetythird4555
      @safetythird4555  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. I did the exact same thing. My donor assembly did not have the helper spring, and it worked okay, but the pedal did return fully. I ended up buying a helper spring off some guy on MyE28.com who makes them. Works good now.

      Thanks! If you're talking about the bolts that connect the torque converter to the flex plate, you can't fit sockets in there. You'll have to use open-end wrenches. Watch the transmission swap video starting at about 11 minutes 30 seconds and I describe what I did.

    Did they have a neutral safety switch in 1985?

    • @safetythird4555

      Meaning a colomn lockout? No, my euro E24 doesn't.

    • @grndiesel
      @grndiesel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@safetythird4555 Just wondering if there's supposed to be clutch interlock or neutral interlock to prevent starting the car when in gear. My 86 CSI doesn't seem to have one. I've driven other vehicles in the 80s that required pressing the clutch in before the starter would work.

    • @safetythird4555
      @safetythird4555  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, mine doesn't have a clutch signal for the starting circuit. It will start without pushing in the clutch. Mine is an auto-to-manual conversion though. Maybe the E24/E28 factory manual cars have it.

    Is this process about the same for an e28?

    • @safetythird4555
      @safetythird4555  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Should be almost exactly the same. The E24 and E28 share most of the same components, one has 4 doors and the other 2. All of the parts I used for the swap were from an E28 actually.
