I've actually heard an excellent theory that the reason Inklings can't swim in most water is simply because all the toxic dumping we *humans* did as well as the radioactive fallout from all the nukes we launched during World Wars III, IV, & V made almost *all* the water in water bodies like the ocean too *acidic* for the squids & octopi that would become the Inklings & Octolings to handle, & that's what drove them onto the land in the *first* place; if that's true, then they probably treat the water they use for drinks & bathing to be far *less* acidic before using it. But they can't do it for whole *bodies* of water like oceans, rivers, lakes, etc, which's why they can't swim in them.
