Airlocks are common on gravity fed systems in the UK where bathrooms cold are fed via a cold water storage tank (apart from the kitchen sink tap cold) because it needs to be potable drinking water. Hot water is also fed by the tank into the open vent hot water cylinder. Something as simple as draining down the tank for maintenance can cause an airlock
