I like that you included OOP editions along with the limited and collector's books! lol, you're so funny with the Books of Babel series, I love seeing your excitement about them. Seriously congrats on getting those books! The secondhand market is insane!!
I need the Folio Phantom of the Opera 😩

@BaileeWalsh I'm happy to hear you appreciate all my Books of Babel gushing! I've got so many thoughts and so much enthusiasm for the series and there's no better place to share it than on booktube! I was extremely lucky with getting my copies. They guy who sold them to me was very kind and he made sure the rights to the following books got passed on to me. Those secondary prices are no joke. I'm glad I picked them up because the other sets I've seen on sale right now make me wanna cry.
I wish you luck on getting the Folio Phantom of the Opera! Folio still has it for sale up on their website. But you can't go wrong checking out buy, sell, trade, groups that cater to Folio.

I've come across some new hardcover special editions that aren't nearly as fancy as the Folio Society's releases but may appeal to budget-conscious collectors during these inflationary times.
One series is called Vintage Quarterbound Classics. It's produced by Penguin and I believe it just started this year. The 17 books so far include some well-known classics like Beloved, Catch-22, Midnight's Children and The Handmaid's Tale (for those who do like that one 😁). It also has some less predictable titles by authors like Italo Calvino, John Williams, Angela Carter and Irvine Welsh.
Another series of hardcover special editions that I believe is also relatively new is called Penguin Vitae. It has a number of well-known titles including The Great Gatsby, Little Women, The Portrait of a Lady and To the Lighthouse.

Thanks for the recommendations Rob and for watching! Yes, I've seen both of those collections and boy are they stunning. I've looked through the titles and while there are none of my favorites among them I'd definitely encourage people to check it out. Its got quite a range of authors and genres.
I did own The Penguin Vitae edition of The Great Gatsby but I that was one of the books I sold off to save up for my Babel set 😅 Hopefully both collections expand. I'd love to see even more titles.

Collecting can be so fun, and those are some lovely editions! I've never really been inclined to finding special editions though. I just go with what I can find at the used bookstore. I do tend to want to get the exact edition of the book I read if I don't have it anymore. I gave away my copy of the Dead Souls Barnes and Noble classic edition and want to get the exact edition again. I think Barnes and Noble stopped printing those paperback editions. I have really come to love those.

Thank you Amanda! When it comes to special editions (at least the pricey ones) I only go for ones that are my favorite books. So if I have a special edition of a book or a series its safe to assume that its a favorite of mine! When it comes to editions, mainly classics, I aim for either the penguin black spines or oxfords. With regards to any other type of book I go for the cheapest one. When it comes to childhood favorites I actually try to hunt down the original edition I read it in too! As for the Barnes and Noble paperback editions they were some of the earliest books in my collection as a kid so I have a fondness for them.

I'm not sure anyone will see this comment but I've discovered another company that has started producing deluxe editions. It's called Kings Langley Press and it's based in Australia.
They released their first book last year - H. G. Wells' The Wheels of Chance. They're starting 2024 with a deluxe edition of The Moonstone and also plan to release The Woman in White sometime this year.
I haven't bought any of their books yet but I am thinking of checking them out.

Everyman is fantastic. Not too expensive for the quality. I don't really buy special editions. I'm not really into any sorta aesthetic. I mostly just go for practical value, best quality for best price. Though I did buy this nice edition of LoTR - and it's funny because I'm not a huge fan of Tolkein. Library of America is really good, too; I've been reading Emerson's collected lectures and essays - great paper and font quality.

Yes, Everyman's Library is fantastic! My copy of The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy is in that edition and it was the most comfortable hardcover I ever read out of! As for Library of America I've seen a bunch of them but have never owned one. I ought to take a look at their selection. Thank you for watching!

Well, if you do decide to buy one, and if you haven't read him yet, I'd recommend Ralph Waldo Emerson. I'm not sure how you feel about philosophy - but Emerson is more a poet than a philosopher, so he has a much more enjoyable style than someone like Kant, lol.

@@scoutdarpy4465 Thanks for the recommendation! Honestly, I'm more inclined to poetry than philosophy so Emerson might be a good call.

@@marianneguevara8279 He's a transcendentalist, so poetry isn't foreign to him; in fact the transcendentalist structure is predicated on the aesthetic quality of beauty - things like nature, art, music, and poetry. So I think you will find Emerson revitalizing if you are interested in things in the abstract. Beauty, truth, and the good - these are essential in understanding transcendentalism. I'm a very abstract thinker - of ideals and the likes - so Emerson feels quite at home to me.

@@scoutdarpy4465 I don't think I've read any transcendentalist literature before. But it does sound like very interesting reading material. I'll certainly give Emerson a try in the future.

That dracula cover art gives me shivers...so powerfully uncomfortable

Its such a beautiful piece of art. I didn't mention it in the video but what's great is on the flap of each book they give a reason as to why they chose this specific image for the cover. Here's what they said for Dracula:
"Interiores by Fernando Vicente is an expression of the fragility of the human form; a gothic, glamorous memento mori reflecting Dracula's looming themes of morality and desire."
