Been playing some Patty Griffin for my daughter. I hit play, we both close our eyes and lose ourselves in her world. What an outstanding lyricist; a rich, riveting voice. One of my favorite artists of all time. I feel lucky to share this world with her.
Same here. It’s been a holiday tradition for years. I listen to this while my pies are baking and think about my mom and her friends who were once these young women. Beautiful song.
Posted for a year, 389 views, and 2 comments? What a sad commentary. Patty Griffin is the best of her generation, should be celebrated everywhere. Thanks BR for posting.

I played this (on home-burned C.D.) in our family vehicles as my oldest child travelled with us; I heard her singing it last week. She has it on her one of her very varied playlists. Her tastes are eclectic, but says that this is one of her favorite songs from when she was a kid because we'd all sing it together, with a kind of reverence for the gravitas of the story-telling. Thanks, Nanci Griffith.
It's not far I can walk Down the block to table talk Close my eyes, make the pies all day Plastic a cap on my hair I used to mind now I don't care I used to mind now I don't care 'cause I'm gray Did I show you the picutre of my nephew Taken at his big birthday surprise At my sisters house last Sunday Now it's Monday and I'm making pies I'm making pies, making pies, pies Thursday nights I go to type Down at the church for Father Mike It gets me out and he ain't hard to like at all Jesus stares at me in my chair With his big blue eyes and his honey brown hair And he's looking at me way up there on the wall Did I show you this picture of my sweetheart Taken of us before the war Of the Greek and his Italian girl One Sunday at the shore We tied our ribbons to the fire escape They were taken by the birds Who flew home to the country As the bombs rained on the world Five a.m., here I am Walking the block to table talk You could cry or die or just make pies all day I'm making pies, making pies, making pies, making pies Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Patty Griffin
Her intro ruins it...I saw the song as a beautiful story she completely cane up with herself through and through but now I know it's inspired by the "table talk pie company" :(
hahaha I'm with you on that! I thought this was a song about the loneliness of being elderly, when the world has kinda left you behind and all you can do is make pies :(
To me, being a lonely old woman who has to work in a factory to get by is even more poignant than someone being home, baking and reminiscing in her cozy kitchen. LOVE this song. Total heart-string puller, I cry every time-a masterpiece.
Catholicism, Italians, WWII, heartaches- your hitting all the buttons and tearing me up.
My favorite Patty Griffin song ... at least for today.
Well said. 😄👊🏼

I can't listen to this song without tears in my eyes. What a gift. Thank you Patty.

Wow
I think you are One of my Huge Fans??
It's not far I can walk
Down the block to table talk
Close my eyes, make the pies all day
Plastic a cap on my hair
I used to mind now I don't care
I used to mind now I don't care 'cause I'm gray
Did I show you the picutre of my nephew
Taken at his big birthday surprise
At my sisters house last Sunday
Now it's Monday and I'm making pies
I'm making pies, making pies, pies
Thursday nights I go to type
Down at the church for Father Mike
It gets me out and he ain't hard to like at all
Jesus stares at me in my chair
With his big blue eyes and his honey brown hair
And he's looking at me way up there on the wall
Did I show you this picture of my sweetheart
Taken of us before the war
Of the Greek and his Italian girl
One Sunday at the shore
We tied our ribbons to the fire escape
They were taken by the birds
Who flew home to the country
As the bombs rained on the world
Five a.m., here I am
Walking the block to table talk
You could cry or die or just make pies all day
I'm making pies, making pies, making pies, making pies

Actually is the Table Talk Pie Company, and they do go great with 7-11 coffee at two in the morning.
She literally uses the words “Table Talk” in the song 🤦♂️😂
@@faststratjo2006 It's Table "Talk." My father was the business agent for the union that staffed it. My brothers all worked there.
