Such Soviet mosaics are my love 💙 It is sad that nowadays Soviet art is treated so badly as if it is something bad... That the government doesn't care about it at all, and it is obvious in my hometown, for example. I do not know why now we all try to get rid of the Soviet past, as it is still an important period of our history. And the art of that period is really beautiful, it is so unique.
You should really do something about this otherwise your great cultural artifacts will be lost in no time. I really want to see the paintings of the Soviet era when I come to russia. If you want we can both do something about this.

That happens here in the USA, too. There are certain kinds of architecture, such as Brutalist, which people find ugly, and many monuments to the confederacy or to subjugation of Native Americans, or Blacks which people find offensive that are being taken down now. But many parts of American cities are boring and ugly and need all the art and interesting architecture that they can get.

When you were showing the tourist shop, i recognized some toys my grandma gifted me with back when I was a child, when she travelled across Russia. This brought me back to such delightful memories, i now remember how passionate she was about Russia and how happy she made me with those peculiar toys. The cathedral is just stunning! It seems that no matter how run down the city or town is in Russia, the cathedrals and big orthodox churches are really looked after and kept in great condition.
Yes! Lots of money is pumped into the restoration of churches. Though Vladimir is not so run down, Natasha just highlighted the run down areas of the city.
@@SamsRussianAdventures Ah yes, when I rewatched the video I thought "run down" was maybe not the right phrase. I was perhaps thinking of the drabness or blandness of the old soviet architecture in some residential areas. I guess in other areas everything can look a bit grey on rainy days.
@@donaldperson948 This is a common assumption, and I do not know how it is everywhere, but from the Russians Ukrainians and other Slavic people I have known, they say that often times the Orthodox community takes great pride in their local church. There is a story I was told where the local congregation wanted to have a beautiful church but they were a very poor town. Since they did not have much money many people donated their own time over a number of years to build and decorate the church. When it was finished it stood out in the small town since it was the nicest building in the area. But then they would sometimes hear visitors say careless and cynical things such as this and were understandably hurt by it. It was their church, built by their hands, a symbol of their community that they were proud of.

Huge companies just crush or buy their competitors today and Eastern Europe + Russia is geographically in the periphery in the global economy and all their companies are only 1-3 decades old. Even if Russia ran something objectively better than idk McDonald's they would never replace them. It's even possible the US and EU would engage in protectionism like they do against Xiaomi, Huawei and other big Chinese corporations.
As someone who has travelled through Russia since 1992, I really like the variety of scenes you show in your films about Russia and its cities - like this one from Vladimir. All towns tell their own stories, and you bring them to life by showing us how they look today. That is much appreciated. My interest was people’s stories, their personal experiences, especially during the Great Patriotic War and the time that followed. Until now, I have used the material to write two novels, in which the scene is set at locations in Russia from Moscow to Vladivostok. Such a vast country, such a fantastic landscape, so many stories still to be told.
I like that you show the mediaeval history AND the recent history of the town too. The gate and cathedral are fascinating, but it's important to remember that many people actually live in the kruschovkas
but do not demolish them, they have not yet been decommissioned and the next 30 years may exist. And new buildings are being built everywhere and quite quickly

But all the 'competing' channels from the young Russian ladies are generally getting better. An exception maybe arguably Mr Bald... who I feel has gone off the boil. I'm sure I've read many comments praising Natasha for he nice soothing voice Narration. But I very distinctly noticed a change in her diction or pronunciation and unfortunately found it more difficult to follow. Maybe there were more anglicised historical terms, even some transliteration from the russian. Either that or I'm just exhausted and my brains slowed down.

Haha We still have a few that date from the 1800s, like the Molly Brown house and Richthofen Castle. Did you see her Vladivostok video? Part of that town looks a lot like Capitol Hill to me.
Exactly, a lot of "ancient" towns to us here in the USA are pretty much mostly mining towns if you aren't counting the first settlements (Jamestown, Williamsburg, etc), even then, very few original buildings by comparison have survived. There are other older cities like New Orleans (early 1700s) and Savannah (1730s), but nothing that really retains the kind of architecture you'd see in Europe.

Definitely. This video was on a whole new level. Though we shouldn’t forget that there are many other areas in this town which don’t make the final edit. The two most popular are the ancient history and the Soviet areas but the town has many new suburbs which are not interesting to film.

If ya'll like Natasha's videos, you'll definitely like at least half of his, they cover a little more than Natasha's and are a bit longer, certainly worth checking out if you're into videos about Russia. No, I don't work for him before anyone asks. 😅
Sam has an alternative video that shows Vladimir in a far more flattering light. It is called "Yeah Russia and the misleading portrayal of a Russian town". I think it's fair to check it out. Vladimir comes across as far more modern than portrayed here, almost astonishingly so. I like Natasha's videos a lot, but it's possible that in her brief visit she missed important parts of the city's story that a tourist could easily miss. It happens all the time and I don't believe it is intentional. I could imagine someone getting a bad impression of San Francisco for example if they experienced the drug addicts in the Tenderloin, the rundown shops there, and the urinating homeless in BART stations, compared to the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, and many other positive aspects of the city. I am an American and have no stake in anything here.

ive been to vladimir, its a very gorgeous quaint town with excellent tourist infrastructure. it was so nice how you could just walk to everything so easily and it was all like "in a line" from the train station. also the train station area was very nice. overall, very charming city

Many years ago I took Russian history but I confess little of that is in my memory. That said, we know people who have lived and was schooled in Russia. I think it is often a misunderstood country that should be explored more by travellers

@@SamsRussianAdventures Because she is a young woman traveling and exploring on her own at all hours and places that not even she is familiar with, so the possibility of being attacked is very real, as it would be in any country that I can think of. I don't believe such things cannot happen in Russia, and she has shown a time or two when a situation has made her feel uneasy in the past. I would be concerned for anybody under similar circumstances.
I just finished reading the book ‘Russka’ by Edward Rutherfurd, it mentions this history when Russia was Kievan Rus and Vladimir was the capital. I recommend this amazing work of historical fiction for anyone interested in Russian history from 180 to 1990s!
I have watched a few videos on Vladimir in the last few months and I'm amazed, as always, how Natasha is able to find unique places and stories not covered by others. Awesome video.
Where I live in Lincoln, UK, we also have many gates to the city. These are big stone arches built into the city wall by the Romans in the 3rd Century. Thanks to the Romans we had advanced technology early like running water, sewerage system, public baths, good roads etc ... As I look out my apartment window, below me is the first canal built in Britain . It's a shame they left! 🏛 🇮🇹

Geography videos are the best! I discovered you today. I lived in the St. Petersburg area for nearly two years from '98-'00, when i was 19-20. I lived in Shuvalova, Vesoly Pasyolik, Avtova, Vyborg, Pushkin, Tosno, and my favorite place was the city center, on Gorokhovaya Street, Dom 3, top floor with a window facing St. Isaac's Cathedral. I visited Novgorod (Veliky), Moscow, and Helsinki. I was a "missionary" but now I am atheist (with geography degree). I taught English classes and worked in the Hermitage Museum. Sorry about the bad weather 😞. I assume Suzdal'd be up next? Both Vladimir & Suzdal are part of the "Golden ring" of historical cities in Central Russia. Also 2 of 3 Russian epic heroes "bogatyri" originate in Vladimir: Ilya Murometz (of Murom) comes from the city of Murom (obviously) which is in Vladimirskaya oblast (Vladimir admin. district) and Dobrynya Nikitich is based on a real relative of one of Vladimir's princes. Apart from that Vladimir houses a notoriously famous prison - Vladimirskij central, where political prisoners as well as most notorious gang members. There is even a blatnaya song of the same name 😅. Additionally since 18th century there was a transfer facility - prisoners sentenced to go to Siberia were sorted here and sent out in groups (they mostly walked there in chains, that's why the highway to Vladimir has a bad rep, since many died on their way. In Soviet times they even renamed part of the highway that began in Moscow into "The highway of Enthusiasts" - extremely ironic 🤦🏻♀️)
Saw recently a documentary regarding the Mongol invasion of Europe on another. During this it said the Mongols absolutely devastated Vladimir. Natasha back in happier times.
I once drove from Moscow to Yekaterinburg. And I was driving thru Vladimir. The weather was just a s bad. And honestly it didn't impress me. Maybe I'll visit it during summer sometime.

Thank you for showing this city to the Western World. Sure the UNESCO sites are the most well known, but I enjoyed the tiny ruined courtyard and the wolves that ran along the wall of the deserted alley probably more. I find your videos very interesting and even a bit nostalgic, especially when you visit the less glamorous locations. I worked in Russia in 2004 and 2005, in 3 of the closed "atomic cities"- Novouralsk, Seversk, and Zelenogorsk (the one close to Krasnoyarsk). We would fly from Moscow to Yekaterinburg, Tomsk, or Krasnoyarsk, respectively and then drive to our destinations passing through many small cities and villages along the way. Our handlers also took us on many excursions on weekends. Russia is a huge, interesting, and largely unknown place as far as Americans are concerned and your videos are a valuable source of information for us. Thank you so much for producing them. I'm glad to see that your channel has been a growing and successful enterprise for you.

If the wooden house is properly maintained and cared for, they are much warmer and healthier in our climate. But, yes, it deteriorates quicker, if the owner doesn't have money 😔
I really love your videos. I find them very interesting and somehow also calming. To answer your question, I probably wouldn't go to Russia as a tourist if I had to spend my own money to do so. I'd probably choose to go someplace else.... like New Zealand or Hawaii... or the national parks in California. I would happily visit Russia as a tourist on someone else's dime though! Such Soviet mosaics are my love 💙 It is sad that nowadays Soviet art is treated so badly as if it is something bad... That the government doesn't care about it at all, and it is obvious in my hometown, for example.
I do not know why now we all try to get rid of the Soviet past, as it is still an important period of our history. And the art of that period is really beautiful, it is so unique.
You should really do something about this otherwise your great cultural artifacts will be lost in no time. I really want to see the paintings of the Soviet era when I come to russia. If you want we can both do something about this.

@@ДедМазай-ц6щ I actually never thought of this fact, you are right... I think they should somehow force the owners of the buildings give the acess to the mosaics.
That happens here in the USA, too. There are certain kinds of architecture, such as Brutalist, which people find ugly, and many monuments to the confederacy or to subjugation of Native Americans, or Blacks which people find offensive that are being taken down now. But many parts of American cities are boring and ugly and need all the art and interesting architecture that they can get.

This brought me back to such delightful memories, i now remember how passionate she was about Russia and how happy she made me with those peculiar toys. The cathedral is just stunning! It seems that no matter how run down the city or town is in Russia, the cathedrals and big orthodox churches are really looked after and kept in great condition.
Yes! Lots of money is pumped into the restoration of churches. Though Vladimir is not so run down, Natasha just highlighted the run down areas of the city.
@@SamsRussianAdventures Ah yes, when I rewatched the video I thought "run down" was maybe not the right phrase. I was perhaps thinking of the drabness or blandness of the old soviet architecture in some residential areas. I guess in other areas everything can look a bit grey on rainy days.

@@donaldperson948 This is a common assumption, and I do not know how it is everywhere, but from the Russians Ukrainians and other Slavic people I have known, they say that often times the Orthodox community takes great pride in their local church. There is a story I was told where the local congregation wanted to have a beautiful church but they were a very poor town. Since they did not have much money many people donated their own time over a number of years to build and decorate the church. When it was finished it stood out in the small town since it was the nicest building in the area. But then they would sometimes hear visitors say careless and cynical things such as this and were understandably hurt by it. It was their church, built by their hands, a symbol of their community that they were proud of.

Huge companies just crush or buy their competitors today and Eastern Europe + Russia is geographically in the periphery in the global economy and all their companies are only 1-3 decades old. Even if Russia ran something objectively better than idk McDonald's they would never replace them. It's even possible the US and EU would engage in protectionism like they do against Xiaomi, Huawei and other big Chinese corporations.
As someone who has travelled through Russia since 1992, I really like the variety of scenes you show in your films about Russia and its cities - like this one from Vladimir. All towns tell their own stories, and you bring them to life by showing us how they look today. That is much appreciated. My interest was people’s stories, their personal experiences, especially during the Great Patriotic War and the time that followed. Until now, I have used the material to write two novels, in which the scene is set at locations in Russia from Moscow to Vladivostok. Such a vast country, such a fantastic landscape, so many stories still to be told.
I like that you show the mediaeval history AND the recent history of the town too. The gate and cathedral are fascinating, but it's important to remember that many people actually live in the kruschovkas
There are also many new buildings in Vladimir too and it is quite a modern city.
but do not demolish them, they have not yet been decommissioned and the next 30 years may exist. And new buildings are being built everywhere and quite quickly

I'm sure I've read many comments praising Natasha for he nice soothing voice Narration. But I very distinctly noticed a change in her diction or pronunciation and unfortunately found it more difficult to follow. Maybe there were more anglicised historical terms, even some transliteration from the russian. Either that or I'm just exhausted and my brains slowed down.

But that's a common effect of emotional and environment influenced impression to the speech outcome. It's more or less tuned by the general impressions, the emotional background, the interaction with people and so on. Such an emotionally powered intensity in her voice - I'd say - is also vivid in the second Vladivostok video (th-cam.com/video/pXAS-xv-aKwa/w-d-xo.htmlnd) on the contrary to the first one (definitely one of my personally favourite ones - though she herself mentions somewhere, that she doesn't like it... That was a great video of such a great historical town. Here in Denver, a building that dates to 1920 is considered ancient. It's nice to see such truly ancient buildings and to hear the history. Thanks.
Haha We still have a few that date from the 1800s, like the Molly Brown house and Richthofen Castle. Did you see her Vladivostok video? Part of that town looks a lot like Capitol Hill to me.
Exactly, a lot of "ancient" towns to us here in the USA are pretty much mostly mining towns if you aren't counting the first settlements (Jamestown, Williamsburg, etc), even then, very few original buildings by comparison have survived. There are other older cities like New Orleans (early 1700s) and Savannah (1730s), but nothing that really retains the kind of architecture you'd see in Europe.

I made several trips to Vladimir in 2010. I loved my time their. The locals were very nice to me and my wife. I hope to go back some day. It was very different from Vladivostok.

Definitely. This video was on a whole new level. Though we shouldn’t forget that there are many other areas in this town which don’t make the final edit. The two most popular are the ancient history and the Soviet areas but the town has many new suburbs which are not interesting to film.

Sam has an alternative video that shows Vladimir in a far more flattering light. It is called "Yeah Russia and the misleading portrayal of a Russian town". I think it's fair to check it out. Vladimir comes across as far more modern than portrayed here, almost astonishingly so. I like Natasha's videos a lot, but it's possible that in her brief visit she missed important parts of the city's story that a tourist could easily miss. It happens all the time and I don't believe it is intentional. I could imagine someone getting a bad impression of San Francisco for example if they experienced the drug addicts in the Tenderloin, the rundown shops there, and the urinating homeless in BART stations, compared to the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, and many other positive aspects of the city. I am an American and have no stake in anything here.

@Sam - maybe you should buy some ads on Natasha's channel - she showed how Vladimir is - like most towns that were built up during the Soviet times - a bunch of boring five-story bland apartment buildings.

ive been to vladimir, its a very gorgeous quaint town with excellent tourist infrastructure. it was so nice how you could just walk to everything so easily and it was all like "in a line" from the train station. also the train station area was very nice. overall, very charming city

Cities that stretch back to the beginning of nations are so fascinating.
It’s a shame that only the gate remains and not the entire wall around the city, though some of the mound is still there.

Many years ago I took Russian history but I confess little of that is in my memory. That said, we know people who have lived and was schooled in Russia. I think it is often a misunderstood country that should be explored more by travellers

@@SamsRussianAdventures Because she is a young woman traveling and exploring on her own at all hours and places that not even she is familiar with, so the possibility of being attacked is very real, as it would be in any country that I can think of. I don't believe such things cannot happen in Russia, and she has shown a time or two when a situation has made her feel uneasy in the past. I would be concerned for anybody under similar circumstances.

I just finished reading the book ‘Russka’ by Edward Rutherfurd, it mentions this history when Russia was Kievan Rus and Vladimir was the capital. I recommend this amazing work of historical fiction for anyone interested in Russian history from 180 to 1990s!
*"Kievan Rus" there was no such state, it was just Russia with capitals in Ladoga, Novgorod, Kyiv, Vladimir, Tver, and Moscow!*
I have watched a few videos on Vladimir in the last few months and I'm amazed, as always, how Natasha is able to find unique places and stories not covered by others. Awesome video.
Where I live in Lincoln, UK, we also have many gates to the city. These are big stone arches built into the city wall by the Romans in the 3rd Century. Thanks to the Romans we had advanced technology early like running water, sewerage system, public baths, good roads etc ... As I look out my apartment window, below me is the first canal built in Britain . It's a shame they left! 🏛 🇮🇹

Geography videos are the best! I discovered you today. I lived in the St. Petersburg area for nearly two years from '98-'00, when i was 19-20. I lived in Shuvalova, Vesoly Pasyolik, Avtova, Vyborg, Pushkin, Tosno, and my favorite place was the city center, on Gorokhovaya Street, Dom 3, top floor with a window facing St. Isaac's Cathedral. I visited Novgorod (Veliky), Moscow, and Helsinki. I was a "missionary" but now I am atheist (with geography degree). I taught English classes and worked in the Hermitage Museum. Watching your point of view of the world reminds me how I felt when I was younger. It is refreshing to see, and a positive influence on others. Thank you for sharing your life. Oospecka Tebe!

Both Vladimir & Suzdal are part of the "Golden ring" of historical cities in Central Russia.
Also 2 of 3 Russian epic heroes "bogatyri" originate in Vladimir: Ilya Murometz (of Murom) comes from the city of Murom (obviously) which is in Vladimirskaya oblast (Vladimir admin. district) and Dobrynya Nikitich is based on a real relative of one of Vladimir's princes.
Apart from that Vladimir houses a notoriously famous prison - Vladimirskij central, where political prisoners as well as most notorious gang members. There is even a blatnaya song of the same name 😅.
Additionally since 18th century there was a transfer facility - prisoners sentenced to go to Siberia were sorted here and sent out in groups (they mostly walked there in chains, that's why the highway to Vladimir has a bad rep, since many died on their way. In Soviet times they even renamed part of the highway that began in Moscow into "The highway of Enthusiasts" - extremely ironic 🤦🏻♀️)

Saw recently a documentary regarding the Mongol invasion of Europe on another. During this it said the Mongols absolutely devastated Vladimir. Natasha back in happier times.
I once drove from Moscow to Yekaterinburg. And I was driving thru Vladimir. The weather was just a s bad. And honestly it didn't impress me. Maybe I'll visit it during summer sometime.
From a tourist point of view I’d say it can be done within a day.

Thank you for showing this city to the Western World. Sure the UNESCO sites are the most well known, but I enjoyed the tiny ruined courtyard and the wolves that ran along the wall of the deserted alley probably more. The misty weather makes me want to paint this lovely city again and again. I was even drawn to the Soviet Mosaic spread across the apartments end. Have a great day Natasha.

I find your videos very interesting and even a bit nostalgic, especially when you visit the less glamorous locations. I worked in Russia in 2004 and 2005, in 3 of the closed "atomic cities"- Novouralsk, Seversk, and Zelenogorsk (the one close to Krasnoyarsk). We would fly from Moscow to Yekaterinburg, Tomsk, or Krasnoyarsk, respectively and then drive to our destinations passing through many small cities and villages along the way. Our handlers also took us on many excursions on weekends. Russia is a huge, interesting, and largely unknown place as far as Americans are concerned and your videos are a valuable source of information for us. Thank you so much for producing them. These video tours, accompanied by Natasha and her commentary, are really good. I am impressed and interested to see how the city authorities have arranged to wash the entire city so that it is very clean for Natasha's visit. They probably do not do this for everybody! :-)

I love the wooden houses in Russia, although for locals they are probably a symbol of poverty. It's something we don't have here in central Europe.
If the wooden house is properly maintained and cared for, they are much warmer and healthier in our climate.
But, yes, it deteriorates quicker, if the owner doesn't have money 😔

I really love your videos. I find them very interesting and somehow also calming. To answer your question, I probably wouldn't go to Russia as a tourist if I had to spend my own money to do so. I'd probably choose to go someplace else.... like New Zealand or Hawaii... or the national parks in California. I would happily visit Russia as a tourist on someone else's dime though!
