    Anthropology is the study of various aspects of humans within past and present societies.
    Social anthropology and cultural anthropology study the norms and values of societies.
    Linguistic anthropology studies how language affects social life.
    Biological or physical anthropology studies the biological development of humans.
    Archaeology, which studies past human cultures through investigation of physical evidence, is thought of as a branch of anthropology in the United States, while in Europe, it is viewed as a discipline in its own right, or grouped under other related disciplines such as history.

    It is a very nice guide. It is professional introduction of Anthropology. Would you kindly help a young scholar who are trying to apply Anthropological method on religious studies? To introduce some classical theories and outstanding modern scholars. Just a simple name list. Is it possible?

    • @AnthroProf001

      The best starting place I can suggest is "Anthropology of Religion: The Basics" by James Bielo, published by Routledge (2015). It is built around six key questions in the anthropology of religion, is very contemporary, and offers suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter. Good luck

    Hello! would it be possible to get a source for the comment about Bronisław Malinowski
    and his reference to advertising as a form of modern magic? I'm in a business class that is currently studying the social sciences and it would be very helpful to me to have that source. I've already looked at Magic, Science and Religion
    and Other Essays but I wasn't able to find anything about advertising. Thank you so much. I really enjoyed your lecture!

      Jessica Richards It’s just a throwaway line, and I’m in Europe so my library isn’t handy, but I’m pretty sure it’s in Coral Gardens and Their Magic. One of these days I’m going to redo all of these with show notes and flourishes...

    • @AnthroProf001

      You might also try papers by my old friend Tim Malefyt. He’s been writing about advertising as magic from the perspective of an anthropologist who spent years in that industry, and as I recall he cites Malinowski. The anthropologists Brian Moeran and John L. McCreery also have a lot to say about advertising-both were Anthropology PhDs who worked for many years in the advertising industry

    * Philosophical anthropology is an incredibly interesting topic imo. In my COMMUNITY section: "The human evolution process, an approach with modern philosophical anthropology as a basis" I reflect on the modern human species and its relation to energy transformation and space exploration. My basic question is, should the modern human species still be called an animal, or is it now (soon) so different concerning its behaviour that it doesn't make sense anymore ?
    An animal has a brain mainly to control its body functions, a modern human is more and more developing towards a brain in focus which needs a body to survive, air and food. This brain is constructed to not accept total randomness and luck for surviving in the solar system, it can by transforming energy (then being able to deflect medium sized asteroids, survive in severe ica age etc) and spreading out in the star system, affect its own probability for survival. Then it has abandoned the main principle animal world, randomness and luck concerning survival in the long run.

    the very first thing to rethink is human uniqueness, which doesn't exist. Anthropologie should be about uniqueness but about connection with everything, because after all we are part of a much bigger picture.

    Can I be an anthropologist even if I don't believe in human evolution? I'm very interested in this career, but I don't want it to go against my religious beliefs.

    • @AnthroProf001
      @AnthroProf001  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most of the anthropologists I know who practice a religious faith belong to versions of Christianity or Islam that do not require them to reject human evolution. I have heard of Christian and Muslim anthropologists who do not believe in human evolution, however. You might pose this question to the Network of Christian Anthropologists, whose site you can find on Facebook.

    I'm frankly concerned that my online World Pre-History and Archaeology class, rather than provide an introduction for people who have never delved into this field, decided "Hey, let's link a video and a shit ton of books instead of *actually* teach my students what this shit is." Like, yes, I get this a 4000 level class, but I'm a literature major, not a humanities major, so I have no idea why I'm even being forced to take this other than the sort of link to linguistic anthropology. I have not taken a course like this *ever* and they expect me to just "get" this shit instantly or know it beforehand -- and it's insulting they think that I fucking have the time to read over a dozen books that go over this field. On top of all that, we got delayed a week because of Harvey, so instead of taking the pace normal, we're being rushed.
    I may need to drop this course. :(

    • @AnthroProf001
      @AnthroProf001  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video was designed for an introductory on-line course on cultural anthropology at Miami University. I'm flattered your professor chose to use it in his online World Pre-History and Archaeology class, sorry that it seems random. I suspect that it is there because the professor realizes that some people in this 400-level course don't have a strong background in the anthropological perspective and this is a relatively painless way to bring them up to speed.
      That said, I don't understand your complaint. A 400(0) level class at most universities is intended for senior majors and highly focused people who want to develop real expertise in a topic. Many can be taken for graduate credit. If you want a broad introduction why take that level course? To be fair, I made the same mistake when I was an undergraduate. Took a 400-level art history course as a sophomore because it fit my schedule and fulfilled a requirement. The heavy reading load was hard to keep up with but more than that it was way over my head--because it was intended for senior art history and philosophy majors with 2-3 years of knowledge about the topic under their belts. I scraped by with a C- (which may have been a gift because the prof liked me) ruining an otherwise healthy GPA. But it was my fault--they can't reduce the work load just because someone came in who was unprepared for the class. That would not be fair to the upper-division students who genuinely need to develop expertise in the topic.
      Good luck!

  • @isabelreal5124
    @isabelreal5124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Las razas no existen, la fisionomía diferencial entre los seres humanos se debe a que procedemos de distintas zonas geográficas con distintas condiciones climáticas, eso hace que tengamos distintos rasgos pero somos de la misma raza, la raza humana.
