  • We continue north on US-49 through Rankin County and into Hinds County and the City of Jackson, Mississippi. Parts of this route run concurrent with I-55, I-20, I-59 and I-220.

Despite the negative talk and unfortunate statistics, Mississippi is one of the most beautiful U.S. states.

Hooptie Hamburger I mean, burning crosses and lynching black men in the 1960’s didn’t do them any favors.
But I agree with your statement lol.

It has some beautiful places, yes, but no matter what you find that is beautiful, other states seem to have more. If you don’t much like Mississippi for all the typical reasons, then arguably the only worst state in the US you could live in would be Alabama, but they have beautiful mountains and beautiful beaches. Mississippi has neither. We have beauty in the people, beauty in the small towns, beauty on our highways and all over the place, but other states have more of the things most people call scenic.
Having said that, I don’t entirely disagree with you. Mississippi is my home and I find a lot of beauty here. Just I always find that most of the things people look for when they seek natural beauty, like mountains, lakes, beaches, etc, are always somewhat less than what you can find in most other states. One unique feature we have is the Mississippi Delta. I invited a friend from Nepal here a few years ago, after i had visited in his country. He was totally taken by the Delta. He just thought it was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. I guess when you grow up in and around the earth’s highest mountains, the flat farmland in the Delta - stretching out as far as the eye can see - is quite something. The farms in Nepal sometimes look very similar, but MUCH MUCH smaller. I traveled all over Nepal and never saw a field you couldn’t fully embrace in one glance.
So I guess it depends on what you’re used to.

You can see how important Highway 49 has been throughout its history in Mississippi by looking at a few of the old official highway maps on MDOT’s website. Check the one from 1960, and you’ll see that 49 was the first road in Mississippi to see a significant rural segment four-laned. The map only shows one other four-lane segment anywhere in the state, the stretch of Highway 51 between Jackson and Terry, and I don’t think that would have been as rural. Looking at these old maps, you can see that MDOT must have prioritized the 49 widening all the way from Jackson to the Gulf Coast, because it proceeded relatively quickly.
The 1960 map also clearly shows the cloverleaf at 49 and 11, and I can’t find any other indication of an interchange anywhere in the state on that map, so it must have been the first, at least the first in a city. So that would be another indication that Hwy 49 might have once been Mississippi’s most important roadway.
If you’ve ever looked at these old maps, you might have noticed something that seems kinda odd. Why did Mississippi begin construction of I-55 at the Tennessee line and work south from there, years before building it north from Jackson? I bet some Jackson merchants were rightfully pissed about that. I can’t help wondering if someone in state government maybe hated the McRae family of Jackson? They owned the largest department stores in the state, and the flagship store would have been in downtown Jackson during those years. I mean, think about what residents of North Mississippi along this route would have done at Christmas, when it was time to go to the big city and shop. Wanna go down bumpy, narrow Highway 51 to keep your money in the state and shop at Jackson, or take that nice new four-lane freeway to Memphis?

Thanks for that link. I frequently reference the topo maps on historicaerials.com, but being topographical maps, they don't always show highways clearly.

      Re-reading this, where I said 1960 should be 1950.

I'm paused at 3:15... After the SPEED LIMIT 65 sign, this highway looks like what I've seen of US50 and OH7 in parts of Southeastern Ohio.

That's Jerry's Catfish House. Definitely some unusual architecture. I wonder if it was a geodesic dome that they smoothed out.

I find 2 lane highways more interesting than 4 lane.

Christopher Burleigh I agree. That’s why we tend to take US and state highways rather than interstates. Thing is though, almost all of the US Highways have been mostly converted to 4-lane.
