Hi KV! I didn't do anything special for prep--no primer, but I did give them a wipe down. Then I used regular spray paint for the outsides, and I used acrylic paint for the stars and spirals. The insides got a bit of acrylic paint and/or some felt (the larger tin) or cardstock that I also painted with acrylic paint. For some of the other embellishments--the moon face and goddess on the sweet dreams box, I used Modge-Podge to glue them on. I hope that helps!

The small box contains all four, right? candle is fire.
If you work with four elements, you could certainly count the candle as fire; in my Gaelic-based practice I only work with three: Earth, Sea, and Sky.
