Hi Marie-Clare, will you be having a tribute of some kind for the great William Russell/Ian Chesterton in the future?

I wish we could come to this planet after 5-10 years and see Lindy over 35. I noticed a waterfall at the very end where their boats will fall.
    Wonder if they'll actually survive?
    "I'm dirty, like there's dirt!"
"I want my food. Where do I get it? Can we eat these plants?"
"We have to grow food. How do we grow food?"
    "How do we hunt?"
    and finally...
    "Doctor! Help us!"

This was an interesting, cleverly plotted episode, which manages not just to satirise social media addiction but also comment pointedly on both race and class (Lindy looks down on Ruby almost as much as she does the Doctor). It is not an easy watch, given how much time we have to spend in the detestable Lindy’s company, and I would have liked the Doctor to give her and her friends the full ferocity of his tongue at the end, as I am sure some previous incarnations would have done. Targeting posh white kids feels a bit like shooting fish in a barrel, to be honest, but the story does also raise interesting moral questions about whether some people are really worth saving and whether you should always try going the extra mile to do so.
In summary, an interesting experiment, well acted and directed, though not one I would rush to watch again. It is unfortunate that once more Ncuti’s role was reduced here, as we still don’t know this Doctor that well and to have two episodes in a row where his role is limited makes it harder to connect with him. I think they should have changed the broadcast order round so this and 73 Yards didn’t go out back to back.

It's like they are living in a tech bubble and literally walk into their death (the slugs), but at the end it's still the same. They are still in their racist bubble, and literally walk off to their deaths. 9/10 for me.

  • @ianz9916

I didn't catch the racist thing at all. I thought it was a class thing. The fact that they made a point of saying you could only go there if you were rich. When she said you're not one of us, I took that as meaning you're beneath us because we are the privileged wealthy and you are poor menials.

Best episode of the series so far. And its not even close. This is also currently the only episode I feel Ncuti feels like the Doctor. Mix of reasons but both this one and the last one being doctor lite definitely isn’t helping. I do think we needed a longer series or filming honestly should have not started until sex education finished or ncuti arranged to leave and only be at early sex ed filming
I hated Lindy and honestly wanted her to die but overall the strongest story.
I have never seen black mirror

The people suffered vertigo when they shut off their circling bubble, that is why the walking became better as the vertigo wore off. As a sufferer of vertigo it was obvious to me but not that obvious for those that dont have to live with it.

Indeed. Not only that, but many psychological experiments have been done where people have to wear goggles with distorting prisms. Navigation is hopeless at first, but people's eyes and brains get used to this weird back-to-front world and they get around fine. However, once the goggles are taken off, the coordination problems return, until the eyes and brain have learnt that normal service has been resumed.

I think it’s meant to be fantasy. In reality there isn’t anything that could be said to Ruby’s mom to make her run away. It’s a play on her fear of abandonment.
    It was a punishment timeline.

The one thing that would get her to stay away from her daughter is the threat of Ruby dying if she did not disown her.

A lot to unpack in this episode! First, on the whole, I loved it. I also like the darker episodes like "Empty Child" and "Blink," and I'm also a fan of Black Mirror. The tension that was built and sustained throughout the episode kept me hooked! I even loved the twist in which Lindy threw Ricky under the bus, thereby revealing what a sh1tty person she was!
My first thought when I saw the slug things was that maybe they were from Mestor's race from "The Twin Dilemma," and although the Fine Time AI was behind the extermination of everyone on the homeworld, that doesn't necessarily negate the possibility. BTW, the trope of an AI figuring out human nature and deciding to wipe them out is hardly a new one. The X-Files episode where Mulder and Scully are hunted by AI-driven machines (Rm9sbG93ZXJz) was preluded by a real-life story of a computer designed to follow real-life chatroom and email input and subsequently began saying racist and other hateful comments on its own.
On the surface, the posh kids' attitude toward the Doctor and Ruby were classist, but of course, the underlying theme is other kinds of bigotry (racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc). Is this a "dystopian version of the world we live in today"? No, unfortunately: the world we live in today is dystopian. Prove me wrong... PLEASE!
Now we come to the one thing in this story I really object to: The Doctor just letting the people march off to their deaths! Unlike andygozzo, I find this very un-Doctor-like. Any other Doctor, especially in New Who--and even more especially Capaldi's Doctor--would have found a way to rescue them, even if it meant materializing the TARDIS around them and whisking them off to another planet against their will. Then, when they would say that they still hated him, he would have said, "Well, at least you're still alive to hate me!" and *then* said, "Now sod you all," and then left.
Finally, I would like to say that I am also in my mid-50's, have been a "Whovian" since 1981, and have seen a lot of changes happen in real-time, some of which I thought the show would never survive. This era will probably wind up in my Bottom 5 (but not the very bottom), but part of the enduring charm of Doctor Who for me is the courage that the people behind it show in trying new approaches to the character and the story of the Doctor and to hold a mirror to humanity from time to time.

One of the problems with packing so many ideas into an episode is that, unlike Classic Who we don't get much world building unfortunately. It's speedy, we get just enough to tell the story, and just hints at background things (like where did the slugs come from, it's not needed for the plot but it's nice to know). In classic who you'd probably have a few more characters.

Hi later reaction to last week's episode this was going In a way I didn't expect with nearly a dr less episode the main character I thought would be like Sally sparrow from blink but no she turns out to been a hateful nasty piece of work. A 8.5 had too watch this one twice but the latter episodes are getting better compared to first two.

That was Ncuti's first time on set, this was the 1st episode shot. During which time Ncuti was still filming Sex Education. Does lead to the odd choice of having 2 Doctor-light episodes in a row. Also if the Dots can kill them why create the slugs?

Why did the dot create the slugs? Surely it could have just killed them itself like it did at the end???

For fun. It's a sentient AI with emotions (like hate). So it gives its enemies a stickier end.

RTD said: "Will you be 10 minutes into it, will you be 15, will you be 20 before you start to think, 'Everyone in this community is white'? And if you didn’t think that, why didn’t you?"
I was quite liked the episode until the last couple of minutes bashed me over the head with The Message.
My answer to RTD is that it is actually OK to be white.

  • @Rik77
    @Rik77 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, I think I still prefer RTD1, but... I am enjoying this series, as long as I take it as it is on screen on its own merits. But I wish the series was longer, I want more 15 and Ruby.
