Picked up on them when i was about 13. Now 28, and still listen to them as much/ if not more than I did back then! Seans music and sound will never get old to my ears.
I grew up in a broken home, father was a physically abusive drunk. I can distinctly remember having my grandparents in the room while people from the DHS came to photograph me for evidence in the court case against my father. I was 9. Father was removed from the home and my mother turned into an absentee parent more concerned about her new boyfriends than her children. Without my grandparents (who died when I was 13 and 15) I would have been in a much worse place. Anyway, a little bit of background to help explain why this song meant so much to me as an adolescent. Before I discovered this song I use to literally look into neighbors windows at night, able to hear their family dinners and laughter and such - and wonder what that would be like.....meanwhile the only thing I had to look forward to was coming home and eating dinner by myself and maybe hoping jackass was playing on MTV or something. This was circa 2001. Years later I discovered this song and it helped me work through so much. I WAS that kid this song was about. It was like validation and healing for me. I loved this song the first time I heard it and still love it. I’m now a 32 year old father of 2, and my kids will NEVER experience what I felt. I’m making sure of that. One day I want to let my mom hear this song to let her in on how my formative years felt, without a father and with a mother who I wouldn’t see for weeks on end.
e have a lot in common. I was a ward of Texas for several years and in foster care. I should have remained in the foster home I was in but ended up back with my mom . Not much had changed
I don't have it in me rn to right all about it. But, I was that kid too, my friend. I'm 37 and got a 15-year-old son, I was a drug addict since I was 9 (heroin), so I lost custody of him in early 2020 for drug use and shit between me and his mom went sideways. He's now on the other side of the country and fuck, I miss my boy! Don't even know why I wrote this. Good luck in life, man.
I remember the conversations I was having with my friends about their favorite artists. And they would all name some popular rapper, but Smile Empty Soul has been my favorite band since I first heard Silhouettes. Idk what Sean has been through in his life, but I swear his lyrics and melody just sings to my soul. Thank you Smile Empty Soul for all your great music. It very well kept me afloat through troubling times.
I met Sean after a show in 2016, he was so cool and down to earth, we got to talk guitars and music for a bit while he signed the merch I was buying, the live show matched the albums. cant wait to see them again.
Loves this band, the self titled will always be my favorite, the lyrics in every track are untouchable! Been lucky to have seen them 15+ times live and meet them. And have a tattoo to prove my devotion. Will never stop loving this band!
I still own and play that album to this day. I'm now 34 and have started playing music myself. These guys were an inspiration to me. If I end up half the musician these guys are, I'll be proud!
After sharing a stage with Sean in 2018, being a fan since 2004ish. I wasn't disappointed meeting him. He is an amazing artist and treated the opening acts with respect.
I walk into the room You don't have to scream I can hear you Bad trip, the needle sticks You get your kicks from confrontation I try to make it past I don't want to get into it right now Can't this family have one day To get away from all the pain Chorus: And through the night I see the light Shining from the neighbor's windows I dream of life where I'm safe In a home where I am not alone Some day I will lay me down On the grass where everything is greener It always seems so good on the other side I'm sick of all the heat You can taste the hate in the air Running through this family, uncomfortably It's burning me Is anybody there In your eyes there's nothing to see Just because your dreams have died Don't drag me down, I've still got mine Chorus Neighbor boy runs up to me, his eyes all black and blue I say what happened to you boy, he said my daddy flew Off the hook 'cause I was playin too loud I guess he couldn't hear the tv He said son I'm a teach you a lesson And then he and then he ... Maybe it's not so good on the other side Maybe it's not so good on the other side But it always seems so good, on the other side It always looks so good it always seems so good
This brought me right back to age 19, sitting on a futon in my first apartment fretting over so many things going on in my life. Smile Empty Soul's music helped me through so much. Thank you for this!
I listened to this in Iraq in 06, and I still listen to them to this day. I've become old because I say modern music lacks the soul of the music of my day. Maybe newbies were never ment to understand it.
I love y'all soooo much. I'm a queer and disabled boy and your music got me through so much stuff the past years. I'm happy grown up now, I owe you some of this and I still listen to your songs almost everyday. Huge greatings from France ♥
I didn't grow up in a broken home, very thankful of that, but I always felt the odd one out and still do at the age of 32. Been keeping me going every year since I was 16 17ish my friend showed me this band, and today this is the only song that always brings a tear to my this and with this knife, also silhouettes is one if not my fav, song just let it all out to.
Would love to see smile empty soul no point and eldest 11 do a tour...most don't know about them...but they get me thru any issue....best bands nobody knows without a doubt
Listened to then so much as a kid n teen swearing I'd never cause thjs kind of pain..now I'm working on healing ahit I've caused n endured. Coming right back to this song 20 plus years later
I seen these guys when I was 10 years old at the house of blues in Chicago and got a picture with them. One of the coolest moments of my life. I’m 29 now. Smile empty soul is so good. The lead singer had f*** bush on his knuckles. 10/10
One of the most favorite SES songs ever. Both lyrics and music get something really vulnerable from the deep inside of me. Thanks, Sean, for the music, can't wait to hear the whole session. Looking forward to new material by SES either solo
Pure talent... Story of my life right in this song... SES is going to be playing in my home town this November on the 26th, so excited to finally see them for the first time. And if I have any luck maybe I'll get a chance to talk to Sean for a bit... Maybe. His songs speak to me on levels so deep that I can't find anywhere else in other musician's songs. I'm very grateful for his music.. Pure talent like I said... And a highly underrated amazing band.
Again I say, FINALLYYYY!! I've sang and screamed this track so many times I can't begin to count em. This acoustic version kicks ass!! Back then I needed that scream cuz that really helped release it. 🤘
Masterpiece. Still listening 2024
Yeah me to this song rocks..
Same. That first album will always be it for me.
Sean is one of the most under rated lyricists ever. Dude's a musical genius
Sooo agree. Loved them for soooo long. Guy needs a music award.
I agree 😁
A Lyricist is somebody that writes rhymes but I do agree with you he's one of the best songwriters that is so underrated
@@jonkirbo8379 Damn HAHAHA
And he actually spells his name correctly
"Just because your dreams have died don't drag me down. I've still got mine."
This line never ceases to give me chills. 17 years later.
A mi el grito en la versión original
i know i still have that
I’ve been listening to these guys since I was 17. I’m 31 now, still love their music ❤️
Picked up on them when i was about 13. Now 28, and still listen to them as much/ if not more than I did back then! Seans music and sound will never get old to my ears.
Right on! 🤘💯💟

It is beyond me how this band didn't make it bigger. They totally deserve it.
I met Sean after a show in 2016, he was so cool and down to earth, we got to talk guitars and music for a bit while he signed the merch I was buying, the live show matched the albums. cant wait to see them again.
Smile empty souls first album will forever hold a dear place in my teenage heart 💛 32 years old an still singing every lyric
Same ❤
I’m 32 now and still loving this band ❤ it’s 2024 and the music that people listen to now it is just like nasty ringing in my ears. It’s a shame.
Magical
The most underrated band in the history. No doubt about it. More underrated than crossfade
I agree. they are extremely underrated
I first heard this song when I was 13, now I'm 28. This band helped me get through my teenage years.
Remember these Jamz when i was In Ramadi, Iraq🇺🇸🥃
Loves this band, the self titled will always be my favorite, the lyrics in every track are untouchable! Been lucky to have seen them 15+ times live and meet them. And have a tattoo to prove my devotion. Will never stop loving this band!

His music and lyrics have gotten me through alot of dark places and times in life. Like if you feel the same...
My one goal in life is to meet this man. Seen him in concert, cried and sang along with his songs..A truly amazing man.
Jr high music. I'm 30 now and I'm still listening.
it always seems so good on the other side.... goosebumps
After sharing a stage with Sean in 2018, being a fan since 2004ish. I wasn't disappointed meeting him. He is an amazing artist and treated the opening acts with respect.
This is my favorite Smile Empty Soul song, by a huge margin
This album got me thought my high school years of abuse for school and home brought me to the light. 💜
Forever In Love With Sean🖤🖤🖤
I think this version really draws out how deep the track itself is
I walk into the room
You don't have to scream I can hear you
Bad trip, the needle sticks
You get your kicks from confrontation
I try to make it past
I don't want to get into it right now
Can't this family have one day
To get away from all the pain
Chorus:
And through the night I see the light
Shining from the neighbor's windows
I dream of life where I'm safe
In a home where I am not alone
Some day I will lay me down
On the grass where everything is greener
It always seems so good on the other side
I'm sick of all the heat
You can taste the hate in the air
Running through this family, uncomfortably
It's burning me
Is anybody there
In your eyes there's nothing to see
Just because your dreams have died
Don't drag me down, I've still got mine
Chorus
Neighbor boy runs up to me, his eyes all black and blue
I say what happened to you boy, he said my daddy flew
Off the hook 'cause I was playin too loud
I guess he couldn't hear the tv
He said son I'm a teach you a lesson
And then he and then he
...
Maybe it's not so good on the other side
Maybe it's not so good on the other side
But it always seems so good, on the other side
It always looks so good it always seems so good
Man... the memories.
Great shit.
little boy runs up to me his eye's all black and blue. man right in my feels
