    Todd, "Only Love Remains" is absolutely beautiful; the quintessential McCartney vibes, chord changes, and so emotional! Thanks...This episode made me realize that I have to revisit the whole PM catalogue asap.

    I bought a Kenwood KX-7050S cassette deck back in December of 1992 at a hefty price. At the time it was seen as pretty high end considering the format´s obvious limitations, but as time went on I used it less and less. A few years into the 2000s I must have gotten rid of it somewhere down the road, and I have no recollection of what actually happened to it. Over the last few years my fascination with compact cassettes has been reawakened through social media, and only a few days ago I pulled the trigger on a cassette deck I had been watching on eBay for some time. In fact, the exact same Kenwood KX-7050S that I bought more than 30 years ago, this time a refurbished model brought back to life by skilled German hands.
    Great episode, Mary!

    Wow. I didn't realize I was so out of step. Give me a top 20 and at least 14 of those songs would be John's. And none of them would be "Imagine." (I'd definitely make room for Maybe I'm Amazed, 1985, Some People Never Know [yep], and maybe toss in two other Pauls and a George out of love for what they did with the Beatles but not b/c I prefer them. [Cold Turkey, Instant Karma, Mother, Working Class Hero, Jealous Guy, Beautiful Boy, Watching the Wheels, New York City, #9 Dream, Well Well Well. There. A Lennon ten.]

    George - What is Life...(even including all Beatles songs, this is probably my #1 favorite!)
    Ringo - It Don't Come Easy
    John - Whatever Gets You Through the Night...(Such a fun, blazing fast tempo!)
    Paul - Jet (in a dead tie w/) Junior's Farm.
    George - Give me Love....(first 20 seconds or so, is so achingly beautiful!)
    Ringo - Back off Boogaloo.
    Paul - Arrow Through Me (in a dead tie w/) With a Little Luck.
    George - Cracker Box Palace
    Ringo - Wrack My Brain
    George - Blow Away....(such a beautifully "innocent" sounding gem.)
    Finally, I could have included "Cloud Nine Dream" & "Mind Games" from John. Or from Paul, "My Love", "Silly Love Songs" & "Let em In".

      @@GrantsRockWarehaus Pete did a McCartney solo album ranking a while back over on SoT (although not sure it included ALL of the Paul solo albums - it might've been a Top 10 ranking now that I think about it). He's also done Lennon's & George's (those might've been more complete since there's so much less material) - don't remember a Ringo ranking...
      Anyway, I've got something like 50 total albums under Paul's name. The ones that've really grown on me over time are Flowers In The Dirt, Off The Ground, Oobu Joobu & Flaming Pie (1989-97). The collab with Elvis Costello called The Studio Collaboration (1998) is interesting. For live albums (besides Wings Over America & the earlier/overlooked Wings Over Europe) Tripping The Live Fantastic is...fantastic!
      The Dirty Mac might be worth a mention - the one-time collab for The Rolling Stones' Rock And Roll Circus of Lennon with Clapton/Keith Richards,/Mitch Mitchell...And not to totally crap on Ringo (you can pay him less - it's up to you) there are a few 70's tunes I like: "It Don't Come Easy", "You're Sixteen", "Oh My My", "Photograph", "Back Off Boogaloo". There's a cool jammy thing on his 1970 Beaucoups Of Blues called "Nashville Jam" that Charlie Daniels plays on (it's a bonus track)

    YT delete my prior post (again). Oh well, here goes again...So the Beatles are my favorite band. As far as solo material goes we can eliminate Ringo as a top 10 contender right off - it's the vocals (plus his love of country). The All Star Band stuff is pretty good...I always felt that John's solo albums were very uneven, "Imagine" obviously transcends music (kinda like Lennon himself). I do like John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Imagine & Double Fantasy...George is a fine songwriter, I've read that he only wrote a total of 25 of the Beatles' songs. Way to underutilize his talents, but then again that's what happens in a band also containing the best songwriting duo ever. All Things Must Pass is a stone cold classic (check the guest musicians on that one sometime - even Peter Frampton!). I also like Concert for Bangla Desh, 33&1/3, Living In The Material World, Dark Horse & Live In Japan quite a bit. Also some great individual tracks: "Beware Of Darkness", "Crackerbox Palace", "Dark Horse", "Give Me Love", "If Not For You", "My Sweet Lord", "Wah Wah", "What Is Life", "Woman Don't You Cry For Me", "You".
    This brings us to Paul. He's actually my pick for THE musical figure of the 20th century - this takes into account the music, longevity, popularity, album sales, influence on others, societal impact etc. Not sure who else one could pick - I guess some might go with Elvis. And one of THE great 70's rock bands = Wings...Given all that I'm really hard-pressed not to make all 10 of my solo Beatles picks McCartney songs. It's also REALLY tough to narrow it down to just 10 but here goes (it'll naturally be Wings-heavy):
    Band On The Run
    Bluebird
    Helen Wheels
    Jet
    Junior's Farm - man I love this tune!
    Live And Let Die
    Magneto And Titanium Man
    Too Many People
    Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
    Venus And Mars
    What that leaves 'on the cutting room floor' so to speak: Beware My Love, Call Me Back Again, Hi Hi Hi, Let 'Em In, Let Me Roll It, Letting Go, Listen to What the Man Said, Maybe I'm Amazed. Medicine Jar, My Love, Old Siam Sir, Rock Show, Rough Ride, Silly Love Songs, Smile Away, Spirits Of Ancient Egypt, That Would Be Something, Time To Hide...I think just about anyone would be more than happy with that '2nd tier' of songs as their entire career (except maybe Elton John & Townshend) - and this is from a guy who'd already spent 7 years as part of the greatest band ever before recording any of that. And there's lots more really good Macca music...Amazing!!!

    This idea could work for solo tracks from the members of Pink Floyd,Kiss,Eagles,Deep Purple,Fleetwood Mac...The top 10 Abba would be all Frida though...

    • @wolf1977
      @wolf1977 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For me personally most of these (that is, picking the 'best' albums/songs by the 'best' band member), would be too easy: Dislike ABBA so no 'solo material', for Floyd it'd have to be Gilmour's output by a mile, don't like Kiss, for the Eagles it's Henley's stuff (unless we're including Joe Walsh - then it's his records by a landslide)...
      The DP/FM solo material is pretty deep. My DP playlist (including the member solo releases & the family tree) is over 1,000 tracks deep, in fact my biggest single band-based playlist. Gillan & Simper have some really good stuff, Hughes of course (my Hughes playlist alone is over 360 tracks), the Ashton/Lord stuff. If we include Tommy Bolin then game over (CTTB is my fave all time DP album)...
      Fleetwood Mac is also huge (although nowhere near DP proportions). I really love the Bob Welch era & he's got some good solo stuff with/without Paris. Peter Green's also got some good solo material. Special mention for Tramp (1969 s/t album-a Danny Kirwan/Mick Fleetwood project) and Gass (1970's Juju-this is Peter Green & Bobby Tench)

      @@wolf1977 Walsh actually made a better solo album right in between the 2 best selling Eagles studio albums....I guess if you really splinter things off you could probably have over 200 solo albums from the multiple Mac members...Love Wright,Waters,Gilmour with Floyd but a lot of the solo stuff isn't for me,i did like About Face.

    • @wolf1977

      @@ericrobertson2024 With you on Waters. Amused To Death for me was by far his best solo effort. On the other hand I love several of Gilmour's: About Face & s/t, plus several live albums (Live At Pompeii, Live In Gdansk, Remember That Night: Live At The Royal Albert Hall and Westwood One). Wright's Wet Dream (1978) isn't bad...
      Walsh's album run from 1972 - 1991 is really strong: Barnstorm, The Smoker You Drink, So What, You Can't Argue With A Sick Mind, But Seriously Folks (absolutely love that record), All Night Long: Live In Dallas, 1981 Radio Broadcast (a boot), There Goes The Neighborhood, You Bought It You Name It, The Confessor, Got Any Gum, Ordinary Average Guy - 11 really strong albums. Even Songs For A Dying Planet & Analog Man are good

    John Lennon’s solo output is great!! Paul could’ve used John just as much as John could’ve used Paul.

    • @wolf1977
      @wolf1977 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have to disagree there. John lost interest in music for several years, and some of his musical output in the 70's is really rough (besides most of his albums being very uneven - at least to me). I think he largely preferred the down-and-dirty method of recording - while Paul is the consummate musician & craftsman (despite not being able to read/write music). Some of this can be seen in Peter Jackson's Let It Be film. In contrast Paul had one of the 70's very best rock bands Wings (with arguably one the handful of best ever live albums) and a TON of great songs - his high quality output far surpasses any of the other three. Yes together they were magic but apart to me there's no comparison

    • @marcusthompson5390
      @marcusthompson5390 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I will also have to disagree with you too. I think Plastic Ono Band alone is better than any McCartney album, considering how I rate ATMP and POB as the two best solo Beatles albums. John followed one masterpiece up with another one when Imagine came out. I’ve always believed that Mind Games simply suffered in production, so having this upcoming remix of the album come out is just going to do wonders for the album. Walls and Bridges is another fantastic album that I rank higher than many McCartney albums. For many McCartney albums I always believed that half of the songs tended to scale from good to great and the other half of the songs tended to not be very good.

    • @wolf1977
      @wolf1977 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@marcusthompson5390 We'll have to agree to disagree. I think Lennon's solo albums are really uneven, yes there are some great individual tracks but to me can't hold a candle to Paul's solo output. I do like Plastic One Band as I posted earlier, as well as Imagine & Double Fantasy - but not over Ram, Wildlife, Band On The Run, Red Rose Speedway, Venus And Mars, Wings Over America, At The Speed Of Sound, London Town, Back To The Egg - and that's just the 70's. Walls And Bridges doesn't do that much for me, I like the two hits "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" & "#9 Dream" plus "Bless You"...
      In fact overall I'd rate George's total solo output ahead of John's (at least in terms of the stuff I like - by something like 2:1). Lennon never produced an All Things Must Pass-type all time great album (the 50th Anniversary box on 5 disks is incredible). To me Lennon represents much more than the music - his activism post-Beatles is at least as important as his solo music
