Eric Hansen's explanation of why The Beatles was top notch. They affected everything everywhere for such a long time( and still do!) and came just in time to musically save America and the rest of the world.
There's never been another band like them & there most likely never will be again. Of course that doesn't compel anyone to automatically like them, it still comes down to personal musical likes/dislikes. It's just that some of those who don't care for them seem to feel the need in some cases to totally dismiss them (one actually called them a 60's Boy Band with guitars) & that's disingenuous, and flat out ignores the reality of who they were & what they achieved. BTW they still stream more than a billion (yes Billion with a 'B') songs per year - how's that for influence/longevity for a band that hasn't existed in 54 years? Some of their orignal albums also still sell fairly well, ensuring that new generations are discovering them going forward
Top 10:Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Rush, John Coltrane, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, ELO, Sammy Hagar (and all bands he was in), Van Halen, and number one Y&T.

My Top 10... alphabetically : Les Baxter Sammy Davis, Jr. Doors Jimi Hendrix Madonna Monkees Lalo Schifrin Frank Sinatra Thin Lizzy Van Halen (with DLR)
All terrific bands...Nugent has definitely went the longest time (56 years) without making a total crap album, although If You Can't Lick Em is pretty weak... Definitely in my top 20..
@@ericrobertson2024 For me that honor would go to Rush as I like all periods of that band's output (except for the first album). Pete over at SoT did a show on bands with 5(?) consecutive great albums. For me Rush was my overall winner with something like 16 total. Purple is really (at least) 3 different bands (kinda like James Gang & Fleetwood Mac) with Blackmore/Bolin/Morse - and for me anyway a big 'dry spell' in the mid/late 80's. Sabbath has nothing that interests me after Mob Rules, same with Nuge after State Of Shock... Rainbow was good but pales in comparison to Purple (a comparison I can't help continually making-fairly or not). Heep was also a really good band but not in the same class IMO as the 'Big Three'
@@wolf1977 Yes Purple was my #17 last time I did such a ranking(during a power outage here) , while Rainbow was somewhere around #80 I guess. Joe Walsh and Nugent are possibly the only 2 with 5 decade careers with no LPs I consider duds.

Wings for sure - one of THE best 70's rock bands! I might also have to get Sir Elton in there, and Be Bop Deluxe for sure! I do like Costello A LOT but couldn't break into my Top 10 - kinda like Joe Jackson. Thin Lizzy is a wonderful band - great discography. Can't argue with Beatles, Purple & The Who. Gotta have Hendrix & The Kinks on the list though...Well that gets us to 9 and haven't even touched on the great prog & fusion bands out there. Wait what about Led Zep?🤷♂This is impossible!
Always interesting to hear people's favourites. Tough task to distil things down but this is a rough estimate of mine (alphabetical order): . Barclay James Harvest . Fairport Convention . Dan Fogelberg . Gordon Lightfoot . Lindisfarne . The Outlaws . REO Speedwagon . Show Of Hands . Al Stewart . Toto Honourables: . Big Big Train (my two favourite albums come later than Sweethearts but I like them all including the '73 reunion record) . The Byrds . Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young) (individually & collectively) . Nanci Griffith . Kansas . Poco . Steeleye Span . Styx . Survivor . 38 Special Painful to have to leave out so many performers that I love but that'll do for now. 🙂 .
Al Stewart has a really strong discography - as proven by his 50(!) disk box set Admiralty Lights...Poco's a band to which I recently went back & relistened - some great stuff! They wouldn't make my Top 10 but at least 7-8 very-good-to-great albums along the way...CSN(&Y) make up my 2nd biggest playlist based on a single band or artist (after Deep Purple & beating out The Beatles) - around 1,000 total tracks when including solo output & related bands
@@carlwmpylu I buy music in mp3 form a la carte so I did take the plunge & went through all 50 disks (online) to cherry-pick the stuff I liked/didn't already have (and I have a lot of AS music). Ended up downloading about two dozen total tracks - a small minority of the total tracks, most of it live
@@carlwmpylu Have you heard his newest from this year called Al Stewart & the Empty Pockets Live? Not studio but since it's been something like 15 years for anything new from AS...2 disks & 19 total tracks...The great Peter White (I think Rhymes In Rooms is one of THE great live/acoustic albums ever) plays on it. Might give a similar experience to cherry-picking those two dozen live tracks off the box set like I did (unless you already have all of those same tracks in live format) - for a lot less $'s! Everything that's on that new live album is also in the box set in some form
My top 10 will not include many obscure bands, but the 10 bands and artist I reach for the most are as follows: 10. Boston 9. Chicago 8.REO Speedwagon 7. Van Halen 6. The Beatles 5. The Moody Blues 4. ELO 3. Journey 2. Styx 1. Duran Duran Honorable mentions: Oasis, Queen, AC/DC, The Byrd's, Matthew Sweet, Pink Floyd, The Cars and Genesis. There are too many bands. I'd have been better to put out a top 25 list of bands.
Hi Grant...did you heard about Matthew Sweet?...pretty sad news...a stroke...there's a crowdfunding...I still see me listening to my '' Girlfriend'' tape over and over when I felt alone...feel bad for him...such a magnificent songwriter...hope he will recover in the best possible way...
In no order Jon Anderson/YES Older Neil Diamond The Cranberries The Alarm U2 esp. early albums Lone Justice Amy Grant Stevie Nicks Fleetwood Mac Simple Minds
@@ericrobertson2024 That excludes their first 7 or so years as a band & their first 10 or so studio albums - unless you're including the Bob Welch era (my fave FM albums). TBH when people talk about the 'pop' Fleetwood Mac I equate that with the 1975 s/t album & later - basically the Buckingham/Nicks lineup. I do really like that record, and Rumours plus some of Tusk/Mirage/Tango/Behind The Mask but not as much as earlier FM...Again, really at least 3 different bands with a different sound/vibe to each
@@wolf1977 The 1971-74 albums have lots of terrific pop oriented material from Christine mostly but my favorites are the more successful albums, except Tango.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble HM Prince Stevie Wonder Elton John Billy Joel The Doors Lynyrd Skynyrd The Rolling Stones AC/DC The Cars Duran Duran The Police Styx Hall and Oates U2 Aerosmith Fleetwood Mac Cheap Trick Steely Dan Chicago Extreme
I have heard Rhyme + Reason, unfortunately . Spring Session and Color are much better though,, and any Steve Lukather penned/sung track will always = skip for me..Nothing against sappy ballads, nor old Luke , it's the combination of the 2 that sucks...Love many Joseph,David and Bobby tracks, but Toto have been hindered badly by the lackluster Lukather.
A little surprised at how few solo artists were picked here. I've considered how long i've lived with my picks and still go to them regularly. In rough order of when i came in - 1 David Bowie, came in at Diamond Dogs 2 Thin Lizzy, first concert in '79 3 Kate Bush, been a fan since the debut 4 Caravan, later to them but a fan from the debut to Better By Far 5 Patti Smith, followed since Easter 6 Joan Armatrading, since i heard Bottom To The Top on the radio. To me, the most underrated artist going 7 Japan, and by extension David Sylvian, Steve Jansen and many of the offshoots 8 UFO, convert since Strangers In The Night 9 Joni Mitchell, saw Shadows & Light film on tv in 1980. It changed me. 10 Smashing Pumpkins, i haven't followed everything but when they're good they're unrivalled. HMs - Television, Paul Simon ( the one not here), John Martyn, Wishbone Ash (to Number The Brave), Marianne Faithful (Broken English onwards).
Never 'got' Television, or UFO...Recently revisited Armatrading's catalog - wonderful stuff. Such a unique voice. Fave Armatrading album is probably the s/t from '76...I think Thin Lizzy is still undervalued as a band, one of the all time greats. Kinda like Be Bop Deluxe, although I think they're even more overlooked (and a band I couldn't leave off my list if I had a Top 10)...Hendrix is conspicuously missing from just about everyone's list - again someone I couldn't possibly leave off mine
The Beatles are #1, then (depending on the day) either The Who or The Kinks for #2/#3 (with Jimi at #4...?). From there the list is pretty wide open - there are WAY too many great performers/bands for me to formulate a solid top 10 (well top 4-10) list. It's driven by my mood at the time - if I'm in a prog or fusion mood (I love both genres) then the list looks different than on a rock day...
@@NaughtyVampire-zf8pd ...and The Archies, although in a different way - I believe their secret plot was to rot everyone's teeth (and minds) by having them listen to their version of saccharine bubblegum pop. The title of their biggest hit "Sugar, Sugar" says it all...😁Good thing the government implemented adding fluoride to our water! Also one of THE great lyric lines: "Hey Jughead where are you?" - pre-dated "Where's Waldo" by two decades... In all seriousness though they did have some catchy tunes like "Who's Gonna Love Me?", "I'm In Love", "Sunshine", "Truck Driver", "Get On The Line" (maybe their best), "You Make Me Wanna Dance", "Hide And Seek", "Everything's All Right", "She's Putting Me Thru Changes", "You Know I Love You", "Love And Rock'n Roll Music", "Over And Over", "Comes The Sun", "Dance", "Easy Guy", "What Goes On", "Hold On Lovin'", "This Is The Night". Four of the first five albums are OK but not nearly enough to come within a mile of being one of my favorite bands (for example The Monkees absolutely trump them - for me anyway) but they had their day. One of those bands where getting the right Best Of collection takes care of things, not much in the way of 'deep tracks'. To me the 5 disk collection Sugar, Sugar: The Complete Albums is overkill - too much filler - 2 disks would've been more than enough provided the 'right' tracks were included
My 10. 1) black sabbath 2) judas priest 3) aerosmith. But only from 72 - 80. 4) elton john. But only from 69 - 76. 5) bad company 6) rainbow .the Dio years 7) Rush 8) Dio solo band 9) kiss 10) zz top
I think I might intentionally or not penalize Aerosmith because I just lost interest after 1987 but I loved Toys,Wings, even some of Vacation.. Probably the same with Iron Maiden,Nightwish, AC/DC where the later material causes my opinion to lower.
@@ericrobertson2024 "If you want to give Ringo less, that's up to you"...Personally not crazy about solo Ringo (except a handful of early hits & some of his All Starr Band stuff). Also I think Lennon's solo albums are very uneven, some great individual tracks & a couple of end-to-end good albums but not as good a discography as let's say George's. Paul of course rules post-Beatles!
@@wolf1977 Yes I can't imagine where Ringo would be for this guy/gal if the Beatles are # 5,000.I had them at #24 and I like very little from that era.
@@ericrobertson2024 Any Who/Kinks from the mid 60's for you? How 'bout Small Faces, Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Cream, Doors, Airplane, Hendrix etc? The Beatles at #24 eh? I'm actually surprised at the little-to-no-mention (I think) for Hendrix. Obviously a very limited discography of original releases but he looms pretty large for me...
@@wolf1977 Beatles,CCR,The Who,Hendrix,Beach Boys,Zep and The Doors would be among my favorites that started prior to 1970. Floyd was my # 6,I liked all eras and the Wall is my favorite album. A tiny panel but I was as shocked by what wasn't mentioned on the episode as I was by Todd's and some of the others choices, whom maybe went more with their current listening than lifetime favorites.
You can love the Beatles as much as you want and that’s cool. I think they had some pretty good songs throughout their tenure. But let’s not kid ourselves, in the early 60’s they were a boy band with guitars. Mid to late 60’s they were a boy band on way too many psychedelics
Well we're all entitled to our own opinion...BUT The Beatles just "a boy band with guitars"? Hardly - and that's based on literally many thousands of musicians who came after naming them as a primary inspiration/influence. And that's not even acknowledging their truly groundbreaking recording techniques (Geoff Emerick/George Martin/Glyn Johns), fantastic songwriting & overall impact on popular culture & society (which has never been equalled by any other music group). So technically sure they were a band composed of boys, and yes they had guitars but that's where the similarities end (for me anyway)...As you said it's cool to like (and dislike) what you want but let's keep it grounded in reality!
@@wolf1977 I’m surprised it took this long for a triggered Beatle fan to respond. If you see base their importance on the fact that a lot of people liked them. Well, go on and do that. That’s fine. I think I may have said I do like some of the songs. George Harrison was great. But overall Paul wrote 60’s versions of pop boy band songs, songs that John the homophobe wife beater hated because he thought he was deeper. Ringo was given things to sing. George was the only member that I found that actually wrote interesting music.
Would you say the Kinks,Rolling Stones,Dave Clark 5 were more serious and less like early versions of Backstreet Boys,New Kids, etc ? I guess The Monkees were geared to teens , so perhaps more accurate with them.
@@ericrobertson2024 Late 60's through mid 70's IS the best Stones period - I fully agree with that (in no small part due to one Mick Taylor). The 'problem' with The Stones is that for me to consider a band an all time great one they have to innovate, not just follow trends. The Beatles did that (perhaps more so than any other band ever). To me The Stones were more 'interpreters' of current trends who knew how to fully exploit them. Yes they were very good at it but I just don't see them breaking a lot of new musical ground ahead of others & so for me that keeps them off that 'all time great band' pedestal. But having said that I can acknowledge their (ongoing) musical influence and obvious huge success... Also that whole Beatles vs Stones thing at the time was a master stroke of brilliant marketing for both - there was never any real rivalry at least on a musical level. Also interesting to note that each band totally changed their public image before hitting it big. The Stones used to wear suits & were considered 'well behaved' where the early Beatles were just the opposite. Played German strip clubs & dressed down/looked grungy by comparison. Both were remade to appeal to their target audience... The Kinks (especially early on but also later in the 70's/into the 80's) are such a great 'hit machine'. They put out 8 consecutive great albums (not counting a couple of comps) in the 60's from the 1964 s/t through 1969's Arthur. One of my top 3 all time fave bands (with The Beatles & The Who). I think their target audience was different from that of The Beatles, maybe more in line with The Who's- although they weren't part of the mod culture. Their songs are almost painfully British (great!). Really got hampered by that multi-year US touring ban...Not a huge Dave Clark 5 fan - they sound a little 'goofy' to me
@@ericrobertson2024 IMO you have to expect The Beatles in that list - also The Kinks. If for the incredible song writing/longevity alone...and The Fab Four for their overall success & impact on society as a whole (which has never been equalled). Personally I've never gotten that excited about The Stones - the early Brian Jones stuff & the Mick Taylor era were their best. But yeah expected them to get lots of love from others in this type of discussion...No love for Jimi so far...?🤷♂If 'pro-rating' his influence & output based on his (lack of) longevity on the scene he'd be my #1 by a long shot!
I already sent my list, but i cant believe how many bands the panel listed that i cant stand . Its surprising because im in the same age group. Who is listing IQ as their fav band? Lol. Its all personal preference but alot of head scratchers on this one. Ha
It was an interesting night of picks, I know a good number of people I grew up with that all listened to the same music-mostly Pop/Rock including all the best big name bands of the era and many of them don't even listen to that kind of music anymore. Years go by, tastes change and with music you never know at different stages in peoples lives what is going to move them ! When I'm making a list of this magnitude, I feel obligated to go with ten of the major bands that created the soundtrack of my life.
People watching this down the line might check the date and think it was an April Fools program. I'm not ridiculing anyone's preferences but i do get what you mean..That 2nd Missing Persons LP + Steve Lukather ballads just suck to my ears, yet i do like the debut and third MP albums and the other Toto vocalists , so I didn't totally shit on any band..
@@drocker4729 For me it also depends on my mood at the time of making the list - sometimes I wanna hear prog or fusion instead of rock so if assembling my top 10 on one of those days it'd look different than on a 'rock' day. That said my top 3 will always be: The Beatles/The Who/The Kinks (#2 & #3 can swap). Yes the passage of time can also introduce changes but those three bands will always be/have always been my top 3...Probably Hendrix at #4...?
@@wolf1977 Good Point Wolf, I think this task would have been much easier if we separated it into a few different genres-Pop, Rock, Prog, Metal - that would give us much more flexibility in making our picks.
Sidney , White Album is shiite , take at least 6 songs out and you may have a decent record .., Rubber Soul , Revolver , Abbey Road , and yes SGT Pepper , now that is genius ..,

BTW they still stream more than a billion (yes Billion with a 'B') songs per year - how's that for influence/longevity for a band that hasn't existed in 54 years? Some of their orignal albums also still sell fairly well, ensuring that new generations are discovering them going forward
Thanks you. And thanks for watching and enjoying the show
Top 10:Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Rush, John Coltrane, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, ELO, Sammy Hagar (and all bands he was in), Van Halen, and number one Y&T.

Three matches. Nice!
(Only 8 picks?)
Elvis Costello is certainly on my top 25.
Tough task to distil things down but this is a rough estimate of mine (alphabetical order):
. Barclay James Harvest
. Fairport Convention
. Dan Fogelberg
. Gordon Lightfoot
. Lindisfarne
. The Outlaws
. REO Speedwagon
. Show Of Hands
. Al Stewart
. Toto
Honourables:
. Big Big Train (my two favourite albums come later than Sweethearts but I like them all including the '73 reunion record)
. The Byrds
. Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young) (individually & collectively)
. Nanci Griffith
. Kansas
. Poco
. Steeleye Span
. Styx
. Survivor
. 38 Special
Painful to have to leave out so many performers that I love but that'll do for now. 🙂

@@wolf1977 I didn't take the plunge on the massive Al Stewart boxed set. Seemed too much to take in.
@@wolf1977 That's interesting. Sounds like I made a wise decision. I live in hop of a new studio record, but it's not looking too promising.

In rough order of when i came in -
1 David Bowie, came in at Diamond Dogs
2 Thin Lizzy, first concert in '79
3 Kate Bush, been a fan since the debut
4 Caravan, later to them but a fan from the debut to Better By Far
5 Patti Smith, followed since Easter
6 Joan Armatrading, since i heard Bottom To The Top on the radio. To me, the most underrated artist going
7 Japan, and by extension David Sylvian, Steve Jansen and many of the offshoots
8 UFO, convert since Strangers In The Night
9 Joni Mitchell, saw Shadows & Light film on tv in 1980.
Standing On The Edge was remastered on the Cheap Trick box set sounded like Grant did not know that
I did not know that… so how is it?
The Beatles are #1, then (depending on the day) either The Who or The Kinks for #2/#3 (with Jimi at #4...?). From there the list is pretty wide open - there are WAY too many great performers/bands for me to formulate a solid top 10 (well top 4-10) list. It's driven by my mood at the time - if I'm in a prog or fusion mood (I love both genres) then the list looks different than on a rock day...
Anne Murray#1 The Cowsills#2 Jose Feluciano#3 GWAR #4 The Archies#5
I don't think bands should try to horrify or disgust the audience in order to distract them from the actual music.
Shame on you, Anne Murray!

Where is solo Ringo though ??
@@wolf1977 Beatles is very overrated. The Rolling Stones albums from late 60s to mid 70s is far better than any of the Beatles albums.
Really got hampered by that multi-year US touring ban...Not a huge Dave Clark 5 fan - they sound a little 'goofy' to me
No one picked The Rolling Stones, id have them over the beatles anyday of the week
CCR, Aerosmith,Stones and The Who were 4 I expected..
@@wolf1977 Yes definitely , those were 4 I expected which no one on the panel picked.
@@wolf1977 Beatles is very overrated.
Yes, the Stones albums from late 60s to mid 70s is far better than any of the Beatles albums.
