- Mr C from The Shamen gives the story behind 'Ebeneezer Goode'.
Richard West, also known as Mr C, performed the controversial hit anthem in the 1990s but some people believed the song was just about a man called Ebeneezer Goode.
Mr C, aka Richard West, belted out “he’s Ebeneezer Goode” on The Shamen's controversial number one hit, released 30 years ago this week. Now he's given the full inside track on its meaning

Proper breath of fresh air hearing Mr C animated, joyful and concise with zero pretentiousness - an infectious personality to watch and learn from x
Could not have put it better.
What a guy. He speaks so candidly and passionately about the scene, the band and his experiences. Great insights. In a world of pretentiousness, his honesty is refreshing. Off to listen to Boss Drum now 🎶🎶
Honesty shows he's comfortable in his skin, we all are on a journey and some have great ones.
Fair play, all the best Mr C 😊
I couldn't have said it better myself mate. You you it bang on
You 'got' it.
Stupid auto correct
@@davehedgehogUK I understood what you meant. Happens to me all the time. Damn autocorrect changing words retrospectively after I've typed them out 🤷♂️🤦
For some strange algorithmic reason, I went into a Shamen rabbit hole and discovered that there is soo much more to them. So many great undiscovered tunes and this story about the 2 songs in parallel. Finally, I might have fallen a little bit in love with Mr C...
Amazingly well spoken, great to see Mr C in good health. They made music of a generation. True UK legend.
Thank you Algorithm for popping this in my feed. Remember the song but knew nothing about the details or Mr.C & what a nice fella!
Great interview. I was working for the council when it came out, there were two other guys my age (22) and the rest were in their 50s. It came on the radio and the old guys were like: "what the fuck is this shit?" and us young guys were all looking at each other and smiling because we knew exactly what this shit was and it was glorious!
Now you're those guys listening to the radio 😂
Great story!
@@GuessMyName234 lol!🤣😂
I worked in a pub and the 50yr old landlords were on E too, we all were, we were all dancing on tables and window edges and counter tops, the roof was nearly blasting off 😅😂
Really enjoyed this interview. "Boss Drum" was a brilliant album and my only acid house purchase. I was a goth at the time but loved it!
So you weren't a goth then.. Goths aren't allowed to have fun and enjoy themselves.
@@azynkron LOL!
@@azynkron the roots of EDM and Goth started in the same new romantic, goth, electronic dance halls in London in the early 1980s. The Prodigy Rammstein fused the genre. But yeah the grunger bashing commited by townies in the 90s and early 2000s meant this wasn't a fam-a-lam merger though.
I was a goth in the way i looked went to all the goth clubs in Edinburgh BUT I WAS REALLY A DISCO AND SOUL QUEEN i loved the shaman amazing time for music!
What a legend! Love how down to earth he is and wears his heart on his sleeve, No heirs & graces, does not apologise for his vices and also extremely philosophical. Just shows after years of doing psychedelics his brain hasn't turned to mush either.
Indeed he is, also neither did mine lol!🤯😂✌️
Or mine@@jamiecurran3544
Yeah and he looks young too !
Proper salt of the earth geezer. You could enjoy a good pint with him. Fame didn't change him. Respect!

Great creative musician, and a real gentleman by the sounds of it.
Yeah that's because he's Ebenezer good!😂
@johnryder8464 Producer would be the correct term, but producers are still musicians even though they don't play live.
What a guy. I used to go to The End regularly. Often saw him there. Always behaved like he wasn't the owner. Very influential artist on many levels.
One of the best clubs ever!
What a great bloke. Grounded, funny, humble. Great speech at the end too.
Wow. What a hart felt interview. I show The Shamen live at their peek just after Ebeneezer Goody got to number one at the legendary Brixton Academy. Good memories. I love that he is doing well.
Pure quality this takes me back to the propper good old days absolute mint
"It was a rug reference." Pure brilliance.
Your proud... We are PROUD to have been there is the late 80's and early 90's living the rave scene and tunes like this set our lives and made life bearable in our mundane jobs. The Shamen were and still are LEGENDS and 30 plus years later I still bang these tunes out LOUD on the Costa Blanca. Mate, i'm the same age as you and YOU saved me and changed my world. Top guy
Truly an inspiration for many of us. Thanks Mr. C! Peace, love & intelligence for life
Anybody that ever listened to the lyrics properly knew it was a double entendre and it was a big part of why it was so loved. It was clever and witty and rebellious with a banging infectious rhythm all at the same time. If you were young and out and about at the time you had to love this song. 😂
True but it is just a great song even if you don't understand the lyrics.
It was so obvious what it was about, it was hardly a secret. I'm surprised they allowed it
I’ve always loved his aura . Nice to
See him looking good he has aged very well.
What a nice chap! Really made me smile, (and get the old Shamen records out. No E to hand, sadly)
Mr. C is still a superb DJ to this day, check him out!
That underlay joke with the double meaning and the rug-reference as the finisher is just awesomeness on a whole next level
Was recommended this after watching some Shamen videos and didn’t know much about him. What a top bloke and a great interview.
Listening to this legend... He was WAY ahead of his time
Why hasn't this had more views 😃
because its on the daily star's trashy channel
Because everybody who remembers this song has chemical induced alzheimers and basically just drools all day
Good question. I am simply pleased to see that he is alive and well
Best group of all time
Because its a 51 minute video that explains a 3 minute song that basically explains itself in 30 seconds.
Whoa... had this video recommended after watching the TOTP performance a while back, was not expecting such deep insight and openly sharing this positive outlook on life and the metaphysical, not to mention what a lovely guy to talk & listen to!
Love him! Such a nice person
After all these years I would like to congratulate Mr C for his choice of backing singers attire for their TOTP appearances.
Sort of guy you would like to have a beer and chat with. Smart guy at the top of his game now and back then. Fantastic albums and a real icon of the 90s. Sorted.
Forever People outstanding, still listen to it now on TH-cam,in 2023,outstanding song.
Your a great guy so honest x
It’s so strange to see someone straight edge interview Mr.C
This was released just late enough to come into my early years. Magic.
I have this tune on my playlist.Brings back good memories 🫠🫠😂
Whenever I hear The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode, it just drives me crazy. What with the video as well, it is pure genius just works so well!
To me, it is Phorever People! God I love that tune!!
quote" it all happened in london bridge ,, the DJs were right,
naughty, nifty, Goode,
Such good memories ! Remember all of this in 1992. Thanks. Mark
What an amazing interview. Being From the UK I can remember this and loved it , for some strange reason I went down the rock ,guns n roses / navara path .
However now have gone full circle and at 55 love the dance , trance , EDM scene . Literally did a full 2 hours sold dancing in a club last week. ❤
Felt amazing for 2 days after and no hangover 🎉.
Quite ironically I’m going down the spiritual path right now and can honestly say this guy is 100%
Peace and love to everyone ❤🍺🙏🇬🇧
Lol.. I went from motorhead to morcheeba in a slow, beautiful slide...
Same I went from Metallica to The Prodigy never looked back . Breakbeats my jam but a bit of Anthrax now and again is fine👍
I drove around playing Ebeneezer goode in my XR2 back then... loving the track but not knowing what it was all about ...love this interview 😎👍
What a fantastic, intelligent and articulate guy. Such a brilliant interview. 😊
"rug" reference lmao 🤣
Fantastic interview.
What an intelligent fellow. Obviously talented as well. Great interview. Thank you.
I remember hearing Move any Mountain at 1:30am at a minesite recreation room like 1991? Great lyrics and blown away love the Shamen's work and how ahead of time Mr C and his associates were. Thanks!
One of my favourite bands. 👍
Legend seen him DJ in Dublin about 20 years ago, he was out mingling listening to the warm up DJ and was very gracious when we approached him and said hello. Legend of a man and he played a funky af house set.
What a nice bloke Mr C is , love getting this insight into the man , i got this track on Rave 92 on cassette for Christmas 92 ! I was 12 ! So good , what a guy ❤❤❤
Brilliant interview. Wish I had found it sooner. What a majestic character Mr. C is. ❤
Been loving the Shamen ever since. Brilliant
Very well spoken & yeah Ebeneezer Goode was a fantastic tune loved it !!
Pissed myself when this slipped under BBC radar when they banned The Smiths and Frankie!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Drugs good gay bad
Panic in the streets.
The side streets of Leeds now then now then …
Jimmy I slipped under your gym slip young dead lady or my mom . Or maybe a tipper for the Yorkshire ripper . Well done BBC . I wonder how many bleeding arseholes you employ . Garry liniker etc . I'm sure it's less than your employees made bleeding arseholes.
Blood is on your hands blood . Vile corrupt media wankers
This was great all the way through but the ENDING MESSAGE is SO IMPORTANT!
Extremely well said Mr C! 👏🏻 💪🏻
Fascinating and entertaining interview.
My mates used to put on some raves and parties, they were friends with Mr C, and he did the mike at one of their raves at a place called the Palace Hotel, Southend Essex uk, we had a reggae soundsydem in one room (Jah Tubbys) and a rave in the other with Mr C on the mike, we had fun back in the day. 👏
Love the fact you're from Holloway...a cockney Holloway boy! The best!
“Never has a song been so cleverly written” come on Richard, that’s a bit of a stretch..😂
This is such an excellent interview - ask a question, and let the guest answer, without being talked all over - Peirs Morgan & Jimmy Fallon take note !
Very refreshing and very candid is Mr C, nothing off limits and his enthusiasm for what he has done and continues to do, is very evident.
Oh - and Melissa Ozinzi is so hot ! 😍
Revisiting this song, this moment - I love it.,
I was just about to move from Primery School to Secondry, when Ebeneezer Goode was released. I was completely oblivious to what it was about but it was played at the local fair, mainly on the Waltzer. It hits home as that was the time we felt like we were growing up lol.
I heard rumours about the song later but that just made it cooler.
love your work mate, thanks for the awesome memories
Mr C. !!!!!! Legend!
The quality production of what The Shamen created, holds high standards today! And will keep on doing so! Love their music! 😁😀😆
Such a nice guy.
The Shamen: Mr. C shares the story behind 'Ebeneezer Goode' 1829pm 3.4.23 jesus loves america but i dont love neither... indeed. my fav words...
Remember I bought the Shamen cassette from Virgin records ,and thought it was so state of the art ,mad how things have changed.
My first ever CD was Move any Mountain (couldn't afford the album!). Pissed my dad right off by playing it in his new stereo before he bought a CD 🤪
The Man the Legend!
Naughty, naughty
Mr C 😎
This man still moves mountains
Wow realy enjoyed listnening to the man himself....I'm 51 and still play your track on a loud system...love it...keep healthy lots of them have gone now Keith etc..
"It's a rug reference" PML 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a cool dude , I’d love to have partied with him in the 90s, fun guy and knows his stuff , great interview 😊👍
I saw The Shamen live back in the day and they put on a great show - all kinds of lights, lazers, props and characters in costumes. It was a brilliant contrast from the ultra-serious indie sh*te going on at the time.
Ebenezer is still one of my picks when I need to slap on the headphones and blast my ears to trigger hyperfocus at work. Just as brilliant today as 30 years ago.
Didn't realize how deep he was into meditation, I thought it was just part of the band's schtick.
Glad he thought Melody Maker was a joke, the best thing about MM is their heads weren't quite as far up their arses as the NME were back then.
I saw The Shamen before the Mr C era and they were brilliant. But these guys to get the entire country singing E's are good was a stroke of genius.
I saw them in Coventry not long before Will's sad untimely death. I love them through all their phases!
Shamen - Move Any Mountain was an absolute belter 👍
I first heard Ebeneezer Goode in a Salvation Army Youth Club over ( to me as a child in single figures) big wall mounted speakers. I didn’t know what I was hearing but it had a profound uplifting effect on me. It was obvious the leaders did not know the message in the song. I am a massive underground dance music fan to this day. Another track that opened my eyes was Technotronic’s “pump up the Jam”. When I head both of these tracks- I wanted to hear more… ❤
I just love Ya Kid K's attitude and accent on Pump Up The Jam - especially the p plosives because it's so against vocals recording etiquette!
@@unclemick-synths yeah great a jam!😁
An absolute legend
The bit where he talks his way through the lyrics is amazing! He raps it so fast in the song I never understood it
This guy is a fxxxxxg legend.
What a great guy, truthful and humble. Overhyped artists of today need listen
I knew him and some of his pals before his fame met them through CB radio which was huge back in the 80s and got to say they where a cool crew and he had some presence then, I moved from the area to kent just when he became famous but good luck to ya Richard and son of H from steve The General, Archway :)
I loved the song back in the day, I also loved Ecstasy 😂

Ebeneezer Goode came out when I was serving in the British Army. None of us knew what the song was about, but I can still remember dozens of hairy ar sed squaddies bopping away to it when it came on in night clubs! A great time to be alive back then (even though we couldn't do illegal drugs), the music, the fashions, the clubs. Everything. And its nice to see Mr C is alive and well!
Great interview from a large character back in the day, didnt know much about him or the shamen, but this has opened up a new perspective for me.
He mentions that they were the only band around at the time that spoke about human evolution and spiritually etc.. although i disagree there. Stero MC's were another amazing band and the lyrics of their album Connected were fantastic.
Mr C sounds lovely to get on with.
You are so relevant today.
I started going through my Awakening may 2020 I innerstand exactly what your talking about . Freedom & sovereignty & being at one with our creator, but Hay! I'm a crazy conspiracy nut job right!!? You know the score 🙏🫂🌎🩵✨️x
My word I remember first time had a pill you literally cannot explain the feeling can you !! Thought I had the meaning of life
The shamans music brings back so many memories of my teenage years, and the rave era.. ebeneezer good was a genius song at that time, and still one of my favourites.
Awesome took me way back. Amazing music they made
Great interview. ALways been a massive Shamen fan. Mr C is such a great person and their music was, indeed, way ahead of its time. Also, hats off for the last 15 minutes. Truth well spooken.
What an absolutely decent guy. Brilliant interview 👍
Ebeneezer Goode is one of the tracks that had a profound inspirational effect upon me, and is one of the reasons I got in to music production.
My recollection of this era is somewhat vague but I do remember these guys and I still have my Boss drum cassette
50 now, such good times, still listen to them every now and then, late 80’s early 90’s was best ever 👍🏼
What a fun and likeable guy!
'Ebeneezer Goode' is a 90s classic everyone loved it
Wow indeed! what an awesome interview!
Great interview. Richard is a great man and love the Shamen!
O.K, I'm at "It's a rug reference".
I've just gotta say, that's pure genius.
Bioody Legendary track.....I was there when it was released in clubs and it went mental! Most knew what it was about straight away, but some did not have a clew. I liked the fact that they included a cautionary tale into the song in the second verse which balances it out, very clever. It's an iconic track...period!
Still on my favourites self mix of tunes Boss Drum, Move Any mountains and Coming on strong absolute legend tunes and how you can't just keep dropping Ezeer Goode, Shamen could have been alongside Orbital and the Chemical Brothers had tragedy not taken Will from the band. Mr C keeps the energy flowing .
So glad he is doing well and yes time has gone quick loved the 90s seems like a sound fella 👍🏻
They were very naughty, naughty! Great sounds they bought to the dance floor! Was my first time trying acid, when they came out! And it didn’t change much than colour became very vivid!
Then you got ripped off! 😂🤣💀
This was both inspirational & educational! When I was in last year of school I owned 2 albums (on cassette): Boss Drum & Experience (Prodigy). Used to pass cassette to school bus driver and ask him to turn it up Loud........Lol. Wasn't until a few years later that I started going to places like Dance Academy & Monastery that I fully appreciated the potential music like this had to make me 'feel good'! Phorever people is still relevant cause it 'Keeps Generating' 😋
So sad that the band ended I've allways been curious why.
Fantastic dance band, remember them well back int day 🎉🎉🎉, brilliant interview, thanks x
Aint many that can say they insisted on live performances on TOTP. I was at that Forum gig, saw them twice in the same week in 1990. Happy days
Love Forever People
Richard is so down to earth. So funny and such a crazy character. I love him and would happily have a few drinks with him.
