Didn’t Rob Scallon make a video on this organ? I recognise the organist. Great organ and great video!

Yes, he really wigged out when he realized he could play heavy metal midi files through it! 😆

Yep! And while I thoroughly enjoyed Rob's video, I must admit, it's nice to hear John talk about the organ in a more detailed, "organ people" oriented way, and not greatly simplified for the masses .

I remember Rob Scallon using his computer with the MIDI hookup and played Stabwound by Necrophagist. Also Super Mario theme song and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Nice to hear some of the original E.M.Skinner survived the American Classic and reform movement eras.

I would think it would take several hours to show everything on this organ. Great job as always, Brent! I am glad my monthly contributions are helping to produce these high quality videos.

I’m glad I got to hear this large instrument. I can definitely hear the American Romantic and English Romantic influence in the voicing, particularly the American Romantic. There is a great abundance of foundation tone to choose from in addition to bright, but not shrill upper work, fiery chorus reeds, and distinctive solo reeds. This is instrument can definitely play most of the repertoire for organ in addition to transcriptions.

It's very nice to see mister Johnson laugh, his smile is contagious! :) Although the organ can be a very serious instrument, the joy it gives to it's fans is indescribable.

I love the voicing of this instrument and while it has to overcome its placement the high wind pressure really makes very heroic.

Sounded great in the front, but didn't fill the room... exactly what I said about the organ at Washington National Cathedral after attending services there in 2004.

That's why, on the old continent, we generally put our main organs at the west end, with the extra advantage that they don't need to be so large in order to be heared in the nave: the sound is much more focused. That's less expensive to build and the organ is easier to keep in shape (more space available in order to build a healthy structure, better accessibility, less tuning issues etc.). Fourth presbyterian is not really large, is it? 50-60 stops would largely suffice. Should a given church be too long to accompany the choir at the east end, we tend to install a second smaller choir organ, which is nice, because it offers work for two organists 🙂 Or, more often, we move the choir to the west end. These choices depend, of course, on what your priorities are regarding what the liturgy requires and/or what the organ(s) should be capable of, wether at the west or the east ends. I do appreciate why large organs are installed, often in cramped conditions, at the east end, but I know what I would prefer...

Pedal divisionals on Gt divisionals is something I'd never even heard of until I got the Hereford Cathedral sample set on my Hauptwerk. Now I don't know how everybody doesn't use them.

Oh I know, especially on instruments with less numbers of pistons and/or no memory levels. The organ at my church had that feature for both swell & great, but they were diconnected decades ago because they caused too many issues with the old electro-mechanical combination action. Oh how convenient they would make registration

What is the "pedal on divisional" (for English organists) thing mentioned at 1:04:10? I'm not very familiar with English organs, or at least not with their piston systems.

Really enjoyed this program. Another wonderful organ in Chicago of note is the organ at The Church of the Ascension on LaSalle. Would love to see a program on it.

So NONE of Skinner’s pipework survived the Æolian-Skinner years?

The organ still has a few Skinner stops, such as the lovely French Horn showcased in the video and the Choir Erzählers/Fagottos/Clarinet.
