Peruvian Amazon, the wonders of life

  • Trying to pick out highlights from my two week trip to Peru is like trying to separate several great but different things, and one of the more unusual experiences on the trip was the time I spent exploring the natural splendor of the Peruvian Amazon. The Amazon rainforest is one of the most naturally diverse regions of the world, but like most jungles the animals inhabiting it have long been too quick and clever to be spotted by most visitors. This was why having a guide with us when we were exploring the walkways and rivers of this part of Peru was such a vital part of enjoying the area, otherwise in many cases I just would not have known what to look for and what I was seeing.
The wildlife that we were able to spot during just a short period in the Peruvian Amazon was amazing, and from the bright yet elusive birds of the forest through to the bats and the insects, every corner of the rainforest has interesting and different species. One of most interesting species we saw was the Hoatzin, or what the guides called the Stinkbird, which are one of the most easy to spot, but have very few predators due to the pungent smell that the bird expels. We were also able to see the endangered Giant Otter, which is native to the Amazon and only has a few thousand animals left in the world.
One of the things that really struck me as I stayed and explored the area with the staff at the Inkaterra Lodge was how they are restricted in order to help preserve the natural diversity and beauty of the area. This emphasis on conservation is seen in everything from the distance we were allowed to get to some animals through to the recycling and strict litter policies in and around the hotel. This remarkable area may be a little difficult to get to and only offering limited tourism, but it is certainly an amazing place to visit, and a real highlight was the canopy walk which took us up among the light leaves of the treetops of the Amazon, where a whole different natural world was revealed.

My husband and I stayed at the Inkaterra Lodge about 5 years ago and you're right, it's amazing. The guides (Wilson!) are great - so knowledgeable. Thanks for highlighting this wonderful resort.

Loved the vid. A stunning array of animal kingdom!
PS You're doing fine on-cam! The fact you're speaking all that intro w/o a script & delivering it naturally, I applaud. It matches the content you're talking about, so go with the organics of your personality.

Great video! Loved the editing and narration. I covered quite a few places/destinations in Peru back in 2010 but missed out on exploring the Amazon. We'll be heading back soon though at some point because Audrey's Grandma lives in Lima.

I had no idea there was such a thing as a foul-smelling bird that no other animal wants to eat. I guess B.O. is better protection in the wild than sharp teeth or poison. Great informational video!
