    Very nice video! I do have one question (if you still remember this vid hehe): I recently purchased a stock 35w version with an i5-6500T included. It ran perfect for a month before i decided to tinker and upgrade it with an i7-6700 (Non T; only reason I decided on this one was due to it being in the service manual.) I bought an upgraded power supply as well to compensate for the extra power draw, and it started throwing the 901 error (confused me for the longest time as to what it meant, but I have one on order now). However once it boots and comes under light load, it freezes up, and I have to restart the system only for the cycle to continue. Could this be due to thermals? My chassis didn't come with either the vents in the top or the secondary fan, although as mentioned earlier that fan is on the way. And if it is, would there be any way to rig those top vents?

      @@laelsteronly thing missing would be the copper heatsink. I did a video that compared the two kinds but that was using a T processor. I'm thinking with the non T a copper one is pretty much needed. What kind of temps are you getting?

    Just like you I bought a G2 on Ebay as a project to tinker with in my home lab. I'm using it as a bare metal Linux box to play around with different Distro's. It was missing the secondary fan and SATA caddy and I got the 901 error as well. I am not driving it hard and only use an NVME SSD so the missing fan is not a huge factor really. I was able to make the 901 error stop by connecting the RPM pin from the CPU fan via a BODGE wire carefully spliced with solder and heat shrink to the secondary fan connector. It mainly caused an issue because I wanted it to boot when the power came back on after an outage automatically. It would sit forever waiting for someone to press a key then continue. It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard attached normally. I was so proud of my fix I even told my wife and she has no idea what I'm talking about so I get to tell someone who understands. YEAH!! I enjoy tinkering with these mini PC's. I'm looking on a deal to put an i7 in it down the road so I can put Proxmox on it so there can be several versions of Linux to play with at the same on one box. I'll probably add a fan then.

    Love my 65 Watt G2. Pretty sure I have it maxed out with an i7 6700 (not the T) , 32 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro installed and upgraded the WiFi to an Intel AX210. It’s been great so far! Currently have a 500GB SSD but I’m considering installing a 1TB NVME.

    Now, what if you have the 65w model and want to install the T varient CPU? Does having the extra fan and 90w PSU cause issues with this? Or is the 65w model able to use either the 6500 AND T varient fine?

      I tend to prefer installing proxmox - that way you can then create virtual Linux machines, play with different versions, do full machine backups, etc. Are you trying to boot from a linux install disk?

    • @arva1kes
      @arva1kes 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also run proxmox. I installed proxmox on USB sticks and use internal disks strictly for storage. And it turns out if I used SAMSUNG usb sticks it will either boot randomly, wait a long time or will get stuck forever. As soon as i unplug a stick it will immediately continue booting (no reboot needed). So i went with external usb->sata box and used m.2 sata to boot off and it worked. So being stuck on startup could be usb peripherial issue.

    Subtle difference and I'm not sure how much difference it makes but I believe all the 65W units were fitted with a copper heatsink rather than an aluminium one (I note yours is). If you fit higher power processors on a 35W unit but put the bigger psu on they still seem happy, just watch the cooling.

    Hello my friend! I'm very intregued by your videos, especially this one because I recently did the same thing you are addressing here. I like your style and information so I am a new subscriber. Recently my G2 65 watt motherboard died and I had to replace it. I had another HP Mini mobo hanging out in a box so I switched it out with the bad one. My concern was that I didn't know if it would work in a 65 watt system because it does not say anywhere on the mobo whether it is a 35 watt or 65 watt mobo. After I hooked it all up with my original i5 6600 CPU and the secondary cooling fan installed and my 90 watt PS, turned it on and to my surprise...IT DID NOT WORK! The unit just keeps turning on for a few seconds and turns off. Although I get a video signal and the HP logo shows on screen, the computer just keeps going on and off. So, I sumise, there must be a differance in the 35 watt mobo and the 65 watt mobo. I thought that if you hooked any mobo up to be either a 65 watt system or 35 watt system they would work...NO that aint happenin! I'm going to look further into this. And, by the way, the the cooling grates on top of the 65 watt lid are to draw in extra air for the cooling because the 65 watt runs hotter. The 35 watt has no need for these grates, although you can run a 35 watt with the grated lid, it won't change anything. The copper heatsink in the 65 watt is for better heat transfer. The 35 watt uses only an aluminum heatsink. OK! Stay cool my friend and keep those videos commin!...

      Very interesting. That seems like a hassle for hp to have two flavors of mobo. Could there be a jumper of some kind that needs to be set? I know of folks putting a 6500t into a 65w system and it worked.

      This is not entirely true, you only get the error message on boot if you have a 65w TDP CPU installed without the HDD fan installed as well. Of course you should also use a 90w PSU to avoid the power draw error popping up.
      The system does not check the clock speed to determine if it needs the HDD fan or not, it checked the TDP registered in the CPU itself. .
