    Saw Cat Power last night and she did a mind-blowingly spectacular rendition of Shivers. She made it her own, but it was so full of love and honor for Roland S. I know he always had a somewhat difficult relationship with that song, but she did him proud with it. Man, RSH, one of the best.

    I've been contemplating suicide,
    But it really doesn't suit my style,
    So I think I'll just act bored instead
    And contain the blood I would've shed?
    She makes me feel so ill at ease
    My heart is really on it's knees
    But I keep a poker face so well
    That even mother couldn't tell
    But my baby's so vain
    She is almost a mirror
    And the sound of her name
    Sends a permanent shiver down my
    Spine
    I keep her photograph against my heart
    For in my life she plays a starring part
    All alcohol and cigarettes
    There is no room for cheap regrets
    She makes me feel so ill at ease
    My heart is really on it's knees
    But I keep a poker face so well
    That even mother couldn't tell
    But my baby's so vain
    She is almost a mirror

    Rowland made Nick Cave. With Shivers.

    • @elizabethhann4028
      @elizabethhann4028 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Some days I think you're right. As much as I adore Nick Cave - and I do - there are some days when I listen to his earliest material, his earliest prototypical dumb-yob punk songs (see here: th-cam.com/video/2EHOlZQQiOY/w-d-xo.html) and covers of the songs that every dumb-yob punk band did covers of in those days (see here: th-cam.com/video/6uuF4GzduBo/w-d-xo.html), and I think, "Gee, Nick was just a silly little Boy Next Door before Rowland got a hold on him." I think that Rowland must have smartened Nick up a lot - gave him an idea of what he could do with songwriting, an idea of how to use language intelligently and creatively in songs - and I think that Rowland gave Nick a golden opportunity to make himself noticed as a singer and bandleader with "Shivers", and that Nick just took that opportunity and ran with it. I like to think that Nick and Rowland had a wonderful creative partnership, at least for a while, and that they meant a lot to each other (at least, during the Birthday Party's early days), but I suspect that Nick never gave Rowland enough credit. Certainly not while Rowland was alive, and arguably not even after Rowland's death. If you watch AUTOLUMINESCENT, you'll notice (I did, anyway) that Nick seems rather less articulate and more awkward than you might have hoped. I found that to be the case, and I figured it had to be not just because of sadness and regret, but because of guilt. Rowland *made* Nick - Nick would never have become the performer he became if it wasn't for Rowland - and I don't think Nick ever realized just how much that was the case.

      @@mattwhitington8754 Thank you. I'm so glad that you think I'm a good read. That's what every writer wants to hear, and I'm a writer. You know, it's strange: the idea that Rowland was responsible for Nick's talent and Nick's rise to stardom - and/or (even!) that Nick stole ideas and inspiration from Rowland - is something like the only conspiracy-theory I believe in, except it isn't really a conspiracy theory. Elsewhere on this site, I have (semi-facetiously) accused Nick of "spiritual vampirism." I know it isn't literally true, but I like to think about it sometimes.

    • @ziegfeldgirl
      @ziegfeldgirl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@elizabethhann4028 Oh, I absolutely agree. I love love love Nick, but had I been around during the early years, I definitely would have lost interest pretty quickly. I don't know if the change was due to influence or just natural maturation, but I don't think things got *great* until Your Funeral My Trial. Sadly, I haven't really enjoyed the foray into ambient styles the last few albums, but I can recognize and appreciate the artistic growth. It's just not my style. Still enjoy the songwriting, though.

    • @elizabethhann4028
      @elizabethhann4028 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ziegfeldgirl Thanks for writing back. Personally, I think that as soon as Nick and Rowland started working together, their music - and especially Nick's lyrics - became so much more compelling and vital, imaginative and wild. I love practically everything the Birthday Party ever recorded, especially the *PRAYERS ON FIRE* album, which featured Nick singing lyrics written not just by Rowland S. Howard ("Ho-Ho"), but by Genevieve McGuckin ("Capers") and Anita Lane ("A Dead Song"). One gets the sense, listening to *PRAYERS ON FIRE* , that in those days the Birthday Party was something like a genuinely collaborative and democratic group, and not just Nick's band. I think that Rowland (and Genevieve and Anita, and Mick Harvey and Tracey Pew in their own way) all profoundly influenced Nick, and educated him and helped make him a better lyricist. But the stronger Nick's songwriting became, the more he wanted to be the *only* lyricist in the group, and his control over the group's direction became that much tighter. This, more than anything else, was the reason the Birthday Party dissolved: Nick refused to sing Rowland's lyrics, and after a while, Rowland refused to play on Nick's songs. I think that Nick continued to improve as a lyricist (and as a musician) up through the Bad Seeds' first decade and even beyond (like you, I still enjoy his songwriting, though I'm continually amazed at just how Nick has matured over the course of his career. I like to say he's gone from Wild Colonial Boy to Man of Constant Sorrow). But I do think he lost something major (something I can't quite define) after his early days with Rowland. " I know everybody grows up, every artist has got to mature; I know Nick's not really the same person as he was in the Birthday Party days. But dome days I feel kinda sad that he'll never sound as loose and wild and free as he did singing "Ho-Ho" or "Capers."

    When you write songs, you need a balance between the creative and cool undescribable and that thing one learns through repetition and muscle memory.. some call it technique i believe....you need a perfect mix, never even stevens from my understanding of it, but some perfect lightning in a bottle type mix that the song writing guy knows is achieved , when it illicits feeling. It feels whole and with an energy that is self contained and lives outside the influence of the songwriting guy. It had been manifested, a little spark had combustion formed to a degree which enticed further actions from the universe. It has purpose, a solitary piece of written musical expression. A powerful 4 four repetition, a layer in which visions can be applied onto. Rock n roll ..

      The second version by The Boys Next Door, got good coverage in Australia. RSH by then was 19. Nick Cave at 21 played on his good looks with rather pouty and histrionic vocals , I thought (I hadn't heard the first version the.) and I found the song hammy. I read years later that RH thought it was misinterpreted by Cave.
      I am partial to the first version. It probably shows a debt to Lou Reed/Velvet Underground, but quite impressively.

      feel good on that pedastal while no one here will ever celebrate your goody two shoes life, what did you write at 15 thats still touches folks & is relevant today except this two bit redundant comment.

      @@henryhawk2904 Not being a smack addict isn't an accomplishment. All you need to do is have no money and no connections and stay home. Most paraplegics and morbidly obese people can do that and still produce more. If being alive and not being hooked on junk are all you can think of to be proud of then you might as well just do junk. At least you'll feel good. Like damn he was in tons of bands and played great guitar, is admired by thousands and respected by his contemporaries. He also kicked dope years before he died of liver cancer. I can easily name a dozen incredibly successful people that did dope, stayed alive, wrote books, albums and advanced science all while addicted to opioids. So you're alive and not a smack addict you must be able to outdo any junkie in history so lets see what exactly do you have to show for it? Aldous Huxley has Brave New World and Doors of Perception/Heaven & Hell. We all know what the Marquis de Sade got up to. Burroughs was one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. His books started coming out in the 50's and he shot H almost daily until he died in the mid 90's. The Beatles, Stones and Clapton were all hooked on smack for a while. Living and not being addicted to smack could also describe a potato or someone in a vegetative state. That just sounds like existing. Boring, risk-free yet somehow proud of it? I wonder, does it bother you that tons of people feel something so pleasurable it can't be described without overdosing or even becoming addicted? Granted most people have trouble with that but there are plenty that don't and they won't face negative consequences. Then there are plenty that are or were addicted and became incredibly successful and wealthy so if you're going to judge back it up and we'll see which song sounds better. Pff. Why are you even listening to this kind of music? Huey Luis and the News would suit you better. "Its hip to be square" I hear Sting is really into his health and U2 seem like they're into good christian living or you could just go Barry Manilow. Its post punk, if the musicians weren't into heroin it was something else. What were you expecting? Anyway I hope that being a non heroin addicted living thing gives you special protection against liver cancer cause thats what killed him and cancer is one of the biggest causes of death. Maybe it won't happen to you but just in case you better get a lot of accomplishments in soon, you probably have some catching up to do.
