Excellent, very valuable tips! For me, the use of the AF button stuck out as well as the encouragement to try different settings to find what you like! Thanks, inspired me to try new ways!
Absolutely brilliant Peter. Just got my OM-1 this week & still setting it up so this was really helpful (Have had Fujis for 8 years so a lot to learn on OM. Thanks for this help, I will now look for more of your videos
Great instructional video, thank you Peter. About the "beep" sound, I find it handy to let me know when Starry Sky achieves focus. Thought I'd mention that since you asked.
Hello Peter, Jose from Puerto Rico. Today, as I write this, (June 9) I bought an OM-1 used from eBay. This is such a difficult camera to find. The guy only had it for 2 months and from what I understand it's new. He said he was selling it because he switched to Canon. He also included 2 batteries, and it will come with all the manuals and original boxed items. I'll probably sell the Mark II as soon as I get the new one in. I'm eager to try it out and continue to have fun with your weekly photographic assignments. Furthermore, I'll be going over this video to test out your suggested settings. I'll keep you posted as soon as it arrives. By the way, this video is awesome!
Hi Peter, it would be great to have a series of videos on "OM-1 Setting for..." Portrait, Bird, Landscape, Sport, etc.; whatever you feel comfortable with.
I use my Olympus cameras extensively for bird photography. I find this combination quite useful: Iso Auto. Operations 1/Fn Lever settings - Mode 1 (changes Dial Function). Operations 1/Dial Function/ M/B/ Fn 1 FNo-Shutter/ Fn2 Exposure compensation both dials. What this allows me to do is to adjust shutter speed, aperture and exposure compensation quickly using Fn lever. For perched birds this is with single focus point, antishock sequential drive - settings saved on C1. For birds in flight middle sized focus point, silent sequential drive - saved on C2, and similar settings with ProCapture drive saved on C3.
Peter ... very useful video ... for me the "beep" helps with the rhythm during a chaotic wedding shoot, and sometimes birds will turn their little heads toward me when they hear the beep ... cheers, Doug
Thank you for the walkthrough! I was worried that this camera menu was going to be too different. After using the E-m1 Mark II for 6 years I'm able to get through the menu very easily. It's good to know that this is different and similar at the same time.
Thank you so much for this! Well done. I especially liked that you take time to explain the "why" and what that means to you and may or may not mean for someone else,
Thanks Peter. Will bookmark this video for future use as it seems it is going to be a long wait to get the camera. Ordered on the first day Feb 15 but no ship dates in site.
Thank you Peter. That was a brilliant way of setting up the camera. It certainly helped having you give the reasons for choosing specific settings. Many thanks and best wishes.
Peter. Your videos are excellent. I learn a lot from them. So I have a tough question, particularly for you. I own 2 Olympus cameras and 4 lenses. Also 2 Canon to include an R5 and 6 lenses. Obviously I need to settle on 1 system. 75 years old so weight and tripod use a key issue. Nature photography is main area. What do you think. I lean toward Olympus for those reasons. But sensor size makes me hesitate. Thanks for your input.
How much would you loose if you used only OM SYSTEM/Olympus? What are the occasions you really need R5. I know that R5 five is an amazing camera. I did test it awhile ago. It is also quite heavy. I think those are the questions needs to be answered. I now it is a tough call.
You have both systems - so how many times are you unhappy with the results from your M4/3 sensor? If this is quite often then you have an answer. If this is rarely then you have a different answer.
Thank you! I always leave the beep on, as I use only the electronic shutter. Other than the propeller in a aeroplane, I've never had a problem with rolling shutter and it makes the battery last a lot longer. What I would like to see is a clear explanation of how to use the AF Focus Adjustment (Menu 3AF). This feature was also in my EM-1 Mk II, but the instruction book does not refer to it at all Same in my new OM-1.
Hi Peter, thanks for this very useful video. I have one suggestion. You mentioned, that you will you use the "C1" for a quicker switch when you need your most used settings. But consider you are in "A" mode. It will take you four steps to come to "C1".But if you chose "C4" for the same purpose, then you only needed three steps to go to your favorite settings. this is only relevant, If you need to go to your most wanted settings as quick as possible.

Quick note regarding starry sky AF mode, You would assume you always want accuracy right? But the manual says accuracy is for tripod, and speed is for handheld.
The G9 has a "NightVision" mode where the LCD/OLED switches to monochrome Red only. This is very useful for star photos, astro sites won't permit white light. I wish that Oly had that option. Also that they would support StarryAF w/ non Olympus lenses:(

Thanks for the video, Peter! I just got an OM-1 a few days ago, after years without a serious camera. My last one was a Nikon F...dating myself. I found your walk through the menus useful, even though I am shooting jpg for the time being. I'm still deciding on how to combine manual and autofocus. Maybe I will just avoid autofocus altogether. I will have some other comments to applicable videos about the lenses I got with this camera.
Hi @rockitdude, I don't know if this still reaches you, but for me, the best of both worlds is to set "AF+MF" to "On" (AF Menu, first page), and using back button AF. This way, you can start the AF with the back button, and adjust/correct manually if you like to (of don't use the AF at all). Shutter button is set to just AE lock (no AF!) when half pressed and release when fully pressed. This mimics perfectly the behaviour of "old time" cameras, plus a convenient AF if wished for.
Hi Peter. VERY HELPFUL, and I like the way you use +/- on the back wheel!! I enjoy shooting birds and have C1 set up for birds with CAF, small focus area. I am using the two buttons on the front of the camera for bird detect and focus area. (Those buttons are so convenient, right under fingers that have nothing else to do.) That way, when I want to quickly turn on bird detect, I remember to give it focusing space to detect the bird. I wish I could make the bird icon yellow because the white icon is very hard to see. Do you know if that is possible?
Very informative video. Eventually received my OM-1 😊. And also just had my 150-400mm + 1.25TC returned from OM Systems with repairs - looks like there were problems with the lens initially particularly with the lens bayonet fitting lose with the camera. So now setting up OM-1 to my requirements hence watching your excellent video clip 😊😊
Hello Peter, Max from Sweden here. You have been one of the sources that made me buy the OM1 camera. My camera came, all went well for a month where I had the time to take 5 to 6 pictures. Then the LCD screen became untouchable.Send it to Portugal for repair, came back and now I cannot figure out how to turn of the extra steady-multishoot-function, making it impossible to set other parameters. You have any tips, maybe many of us have the same issue?
Thanks this is useful, I will watch again. I set the beep on for focus confirmation in my astrophotography custom settings. With the Starry Sky AF it is really useful to have audible focus confirmation because if you miss the solid green dot confirmation you won’t know if it successfully focused on the stars. For my Copyright info I set my email address in one of them in case my camera is lost and the finder is helpful. I also leave a .txt file on the SD card with my contact info.
The email is a good idea. I might do that too. Thanks for the tip. The .txt file is a wise thing too. Most likely people will look what is in the memory card.
Hi Peter, thank you for your always instructive, informative and relevant videos. Thank you a lot actually. Even some of your older videos are still worth while. Regarding settings (this video) then I am a bit confused arriving to OM System from many years as Nikon DSLR FF shooter. On Nikon I shoot RAW in Manual mode with 3-4 adjustments during the day or as light changes (to be in control) but on my newly acquired both Olympus and OM System gear I have this auto-ISO-between-this-and-that-range disturbing the third element in my exposure triangle (i.e., loosing control). According to this video you use/recommend auto-ISO. How do you fully control Manual mode then ? PS. You have convinced me about the qualities of Olympus, OM System and MFT for which I am very grateful. I feel creative again and now have one of my combination glued to my hand every day and all the time, smiling. The Olympus / OM System quality, ergonomics, features and not least picture quality is outstanding. Big shout out from Denmark. Br, /Per
Thanks for this excellent walk-through on settings. So much to consider will take some time to consume it all, but some immediate changes I've made. One term you mentioned very much is ETTR. Pardon me for the newbie question, but what is ETTR?
Hi Peter, Great video as always. I'm wondering if there is a way to assign a button to procapture. I go to the cog menu but don't see drive settings as available. I'm trying to figure out the quickest way to toggle to pro capture besides going into the super control menu. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks. There is no button that can be assigned to ProCapture. However there is a work around. Make a custom settings that has ProCapture and assign it to C2 for example. Then assign a button to turn on C2 on. The problem with this is that it won't work if you have any of the C-modes on. It works if you have any of the P, A, S or M on.
@@ForsgardPeter I really did. I've canceled GH6 order, just because it's way too much for my needs. Thinking about OM-1 - as the only camera - with expanded video options I think it will be perfect tool to replace my E-M1 mark 3 and GH5.
Thanks Peter. I’m not sure if I imagined it, but did you say you are doing an OM1 course? I would love to receive details on it. Best wishes, Catherine
I do have a few videos about flag colors. Here is a playlist of videos about exposure and ETTR: th-cam.com/play/PLDi4hF9-cy6gHucRXGhcdj6d45lsr4T0J.html
Hi Peter. I have two Olympus cameras ( OM-1 & OM-5) and five lenses. I cannot download OI.Share. I live in Uruguay, South America. Can you tell me how can I get it ? Thanks for whatever you can do.
You need log in to an App store/Google Play of a country that has it. Try US. It is not the best solutions, but unfortunately OMDS does not have representation over there.
Thank you Peter for you excellent advice. I have set AEL as Subject selection. Sometimes when I press the AEL button and turn the front dial the camera shutter activates and it takes pictures. What am I doing wrong?
I have not been able to set up Raw, shoot and then dowload the raw photo to my Apple Photo: Version 7.0 (450.0.160). Also, you clearly advise downloading Workspace and then updating the OM-1 software. My Macbook pro wont dowload the software and Olympus in both email and a phone call after giving me insptructions to do so say they are working on a fix for newer Apple Operation systems like, Monterey. Any advice, or solution? thank you.
Hello Peter I have a question. Do you know why it goes from color to black and white when I’m in manual focus, focus peaking, monochromatic and then it goes back to color when I’m focusing and then back to black-and-white when I’m done focusing
Yeah I find it strange too. Because it doesn’t do that on some of the other systems that are not a OLYMPUS. I don’t know why it goes from black-and-white to color and then back to black-and-white I have the focus peaking set to the three different color options and still does it
@@ForsgardPeter Forgive me, for I’m brand new the world of serious photography and got my OM-1 only a few days ago. I have the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro. There’s no way for me to adjust the focus/depth of field manually from the lens. The camera does that all for me. I can hear it happening internally! Also, when I go into the metadata, it already says the photo was captured with the exact macro lens I’m using. It would make sense to me that they communicate electronically since both the lens and camera have those little metal pins that cum in contact when attached.
Yes you can. When you change the settings while using C-mode you can set it so that the settings are automatically saved to that C-mode or you can choose so that they won't.
I think I might have zoned out and missed it.. I've got a gray box in the middle of the lcd that I turned on when I first got my om1.. What is it and how do I toggle it off?
Nicely done video. I would like to add some clarification to your statement about metering modes. If you are shooting in manual mode then the metering mode does not matter (as you said). However, if you are shooting in one of the automatic exposure modes then it matters very much. If you are using the wrong metering mode (especially spot) you may get some unexpected results. I tend to leave my camera on the standard (Matrix, Evaluative or whatever they call it) mode as it will get the exposure right about 95% of the time. I will override the choices that the camera makes with the EC dial. Sometimes if the light is not going to be changing much I will switch to full manual exposure to control all aspects individually.
If you use the flag colors it does not matter what exposure mode you use. The exposure will be the same anyways. Only thing that might change is the starting point from where we do the exposure compensation. We have think about the exposure totally different. This image will be a starting point for editing. If photographing jpg, it is a different thing.
@@noxious8 if you are using auto iso then it is not full manual mode. Yes if using any of the auto exposure modes then metering matters. However it is generally pretty easy to override the exposure with EC
@@noxious8 Well I guess we are just talking about semantics but to me manual mode means that I am in control of all three aspects of the "exposure triangle." Regardless I still try to use the appropriate metering mode for the situation.
I would like to install the app on my phone but, even if I am in Europe, it says it's not available in my country. How do I save the settings on my phone? Thank you
Hey Peter, thanks for the overview of what you use. I have another question for you. If there are multiple people in the frame, can you tap on which one you want to focus on or does it only focus on the closest person?
Man great video! I just got my OM-1. However I am not familiar with Eddr mode. You mentioned something about the contrast and this and that? What exactly is that. Also do you think that is beneficial for someone that shoots birds in flight and lots of landscape and wildlife?
@@ForsgardPeter thank you Peter. Then may I seek your advice about the AF starry sky ? After I choose in the control panel from S-AF to AF (*), do i need to press the AF button at the top right hand corner to let AF starry sky running? Sorry for the long question
Brilliant news on the ability to save settings in the app. The feature appears in my app with no camera connected. So does this work with any Olympus camera with WiFi?
It works with cameras that support saving to app. At the moment these cameras should be able to back up to mobile: OM-1, E-M1 Mark III, E-M1X, E-M1 Mark II, E-M5 Mark II (firmware 3.0 and up.) and Pen-F (firmware 2.0 and up.)
What is everyone using for photo editing? I had a lumix G9 and used dark table and affinity photo to process raw photos. I just got my Om-1 today and neither of those softwares can open the raw files,I even tried downloading rawtherapee and that couldn't open them either.
Hi Peter, Talking about settings: it seems the low ISO processing settings for detail vs drive priority has a big effect on burst speed and buffer clearing times. But I can't really find a good explanation about what the difference is. Does it affect only the jpg or also the raw files? Can you tell us what the difference is?
I will look into that. It seems that when camera is going full speed the camera priorities speed over quality. This applies only when Continues shooting is in use. Single shot always priorities image quality. I will get back to you with this. Maybe a video about it.
I pre-ordered mine back on Feb 15th. Do you, with your insider contacts, have any idea when they will ship? How come I pre-ordered and still didn’t get one? Are we looking at weeks, months?
Anti-Flicker Shooting. The camera will detect if there is flickering in lights and adjust the timing of shutter. Anti-Flicker Shooting can be turned off.

Hi Peter I purchased the Mysets and loaded them into my OM1. I noticed that when it loaded the file ( before it sent it to the camera) it showed your camera's serial number as that was the camera the mysets came from. I am not sure if this would be a problem in the future for you. Just thought I would let you know.
Thanks so much for purchasing that set of settings. I hope they work well for you. Thank you also for informing about this. I know it does. I talked about this with OMDS and they said that it is not a major problem. There are possible problems, but I have taken care them.

Br, /Per
Thank you.
@@ForsgardPeter I assume that you disable auto-iso then. Thank you.
Yes I did.
Thanks for this excellent walk-through on settings. So much to consider will take some time to consume it all, but some immediate changes I've made. One term you mentioned very much is ETTR. Pardon me for the newbie question, but what is ETTR?
Thanks. It means exposure to the right. Here are some more info about it: th-cam.com/play/PLDi4hF9-cy6gHucRXGhcdj6d45lsr4T0J.html
Hi Peter,
Great video as always.
Thanks peter. I did not follow what you do with the dials. Would you explain that again?
I have set the back dial to exposure compensation and the front dial to aperture/shutter.
Thank you Peter for this deep review.
Glad you enjoyed it
@@ForsgardPeter I really did.
Yes, I am planning one.
Very informative as ever. I wonder if you can copy the em1 mark iii customized settings into the OM1 without having to redo them.
Thanks. You can use the same settings. You have to set them manually.
Thanks for this Peter now setup my OM1 To ETTR again. 👍
Glad to help.
Peter, What are "flag/flat? colors?" Are they explained in another video? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
I do have a few videos about flag colors. Here is a playlist of videos about exposure and ETTR: th-cam.com/play/PLDi4hF9-cy6gHucRXGhcdj6d45lsr4T0J.html
@@ForsgardPeter Ahhhh...."Blinkies".....Thanks.
Hi Peter. You mention that you shoot in EDDR. I have no idea what you are talking about. can you explain?
ETTR, Exposure to the right. Here are some more videos about that: th-cam.com/video/CCm12Fdo6Qc/w-d-xo.html
@@ForsgardPeter Lol! I really blew that one. Thank you for getting back to me.
@@ForsgardPeter Thanks a lot !!!!! Yours.
Thank you Peter for you excellent advice. I have set AEL as Subject selection. Sometimes when I press the AEL button and turn the front dial the camera shutter activates and it takes pictures. What am I doing wrong?
You are not accidently pressing the shutter button?
I have not been able to set up Raw, shoot and then dowload the raw photo to my Apple Photo: Version 7.0 (450.0.160). Also, you clearly advise downloading Workspace and then updating the OM-1 software. My Macbook pro wont dowload the software and Olympus in both email and a phone call after giving me insptructions to do so say they are working on a fix for newer Apple Operation systems like, Monterey. Any advice, or solution? thank you.
It is very hard to say about computer problems. I am not an expert on that.
Thank you, Sir! Great info as always.
Hello Peter I have a question. Do you know why it goes from color to black and white when I’m in manual focus, focus peaking, monochromatic and then it goes back to color when I’m focusing and then back to black-and-white when I’m done focusing
I have no idea why it does that. I think it is a bit strange. Maybe it is because the peaking needs colors?
Yeah I find it strange too. Because it doesn’t do that on some of the other systems that are not a OLYMPUS. I don’t know why it goes from black-and-white to color and then back to black-and-white I have the focus peaking set to the three different color options and still does it
24:18 Doesn’t my macro lens communicate electronically with the camera?
It depends on your macro lens. What lens do you have?
@@ForsgardPeter Forgive me, for I’m brand new the world of serious photography and got my OM-1 only a few days ago. I have the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro. There’s no way for me to adjust the focus/depth of field manually from the lens. The camera does that all for me. I can hear it happening internally! Also, when I go into the metadata, it already says the photo was captured with the exact macro lens I’m using. It would make sense to me that they communicate electronically since both the lens and camera have those little metal pins that cum in contact when attached.
I just checked, and the metadata for my super-telephoto ED 75-300MM F4.8-6.7 II also indicates that it was being used for the capture.
You adjust the aperture from the camera. Focusing can be done from the lens after you have changed the settings to manual focus from the camera.
Great stuff thinking of buying the OM-1, In RAW mode is it 14bit?
It is 12bit.
Once you choose a custom mode, can you adjust the settings or is it fixed? Thanks, Peter, for this video.
Yes you can. When you change the settings while using C-mode you can set it so that the settings are automatically saved to that C-mode or you can choose so that they won't.
Thanks Peter for a very useful guide. Does anyone know how to check the shutter count? The method for the EM1 Mark 3 doesn't work.
I do not know. Some will figure it out. I will try to find out how it is done.
Thanks Peter.
I think I might have zoned out and missed it.. I've got a gray box in the middle of the lcd that I turned on when I first got my om1.. What is it and how do I toggle it off?
I have no idea what it could be. Have you tried to press the info button a few times? If it does not go away make a full reset.
@John Huff When using manual mode with auto ISO metering does matter
@@noxious8 if you are using auto iso then it is not full manual mode. Yes if using any of the auto exposure modes then metering matters. However it is generally pretty easy to override the exposure with EC
@@JHuffPhoto You are right. Just wanted to clarify that manual mode is not always fully manual. Depends on the settings if metering matters
Thank you
You need log into the application store of that particular country you are in. What country are you from?
Hey Peter, thanks for the overview of what you use. I have another question for you. If there are multiple people in the frame, can you tap on which one you want to focus on or does it only focus on the closest person?
You will set the face priority to AF-On button or some other button. Press it and with back dial you can switch the person it is focusing.
@@ForsgardPeter That works. Thanks Peter.
Man great video! I just got my OM-1. However I am not familiar with Eddr mode. You mentioned something about the contrast and this and that? What exactly is that. Also do you think that is beneficial for someone that shoots birds in flight and lots of landscape and wildlife?
ETTR, exposure to the right. I have a playlist of videos about exposure: th-cam.com/play/PLDi4hF9-cy6gHucRXGhcdj6d45lsr4T0J.html
Does your om 1 get s warm when making photos? Should be concern? I don t remember if the m1 mk iii was getting warm
Mine has not gotten hot while photographing.
Hi Peter, may I have your advice where is the settings for time lapse in OM1 ? Many thanks in advance
Shooting Menu 2 and 2. Other Shooting Functions > Interval Shooting
@@ForsgardPeter thank you Peter. Then may I seek your advice about the AF starry sky ? After I choose in the control panel from S-AF to AF (*), do i need to press the AF button at the top right hand corner to let AF starry sky running? Sorry for the long question
Yes the AEL button will make the focus.
@@ForsgardPeter thank you
Brilliant news on the ability to save settings in the app.
Dear Peter: I can't configure the OM1 in automatic ISO, please if you can help me.
Thank you.
What do you mean. That should not be an issue. Do you mean Full Auto. If that is the case you cannot. You need to have A, S or M.
What is everyone using for photo editing? I had a lumix G9 and used dark table and affinity photo to process raw photos. I just got my Om-1 today and neither of those softwares can open the raw files,I even tried downloading rawtherapee and that couldn't open them either.
I like shutter sound on so I know I have taken the shot and not taken loads of shots as I did when I first had the camera.
Second time in watching :). Peter, do you use back button focus?
Sometimes I do now with OM-1. I have never really gotten used to it for some reason. It is a handy way.
Hi Peter,
Talking about settings: it seems the low ISO processing settings for detail vs drive priority has a big effect on burst speed and buffer clearing times.
@@ForsgardPeter thanks! I appreciate it!
I pre-ordered mine back on Feb 15th. Do you, with your insider contacts, have any idea when they will ship? How come I pre-ordered and still didn’t get one? Are we looking at weeks, months?
Sorry to hear this. Did you order it from OM SYSTEM webshop or from a dealer?
@@ForsgardPeter I ordered it from my local dealer.
Ok, then it is really hard to find out. Unfortunately I cannot help on this one.

What does FLK stand for in the viewfinder and live view?
Anti-Flicker Shooting. The camera will detect if there is flickering in lights and adjust the timing of shutter. Anti-Flicker Shooting can be turned off.

What is the green color in the histogram for?
It is the values at the focus point.

It should be ok. I just tested the link. You click the link and it should take you the buymecoffee site to buy the settings. This link should take straight to the settings: www.buymeacoffee.com/PeterForsgard/e/63780
Good work!

How to get to C mode settings?
You can access your stored settings from Mode Dila or the menu. To store you need to go to the menu Shooting Menu 1 and Custom Settings.
What is EDDR?
