    Well done. Thank you. I have been using Nikon full frame cameras since the D3--2005, I think. I recently purchased a new OM1, and I am loving it. Your video has helped me with some features that are new to me.

      It is! I use my 40-150 pro for a lot of portraiture, and I get awesome results. Shooting raw files, the bokeh is some of the best I've seen. Subjects are isolated and the bokeh is smooth and creamy.

    Some quick answers to some of your questions. Will add more soon:
    Q: When you use the MF clutch, is it still focus by wire or is it physical manual focus?
    A: It is by wire. There is always an engine, moving the focusing lens elements.
    Q: Why, when in bird detection mode, with all focus points selected, and getting the boxes around the bird´s body and head do I often get OOF images of birds in trees? Using CAF.
    A: When shooting birds, especially in trees, it is recommended to choose smaller AF targeting area, than the ALL selected. I would rather stick to anything from Cross, Middle or Large AF targeting area, just making sure, that the bird is touching the area at least partially. Branches and leaves can distract the AF.
    Q: I may rent a 150-400 lens for an upcoming trip. Any suggestions for optimal settings from camera and lens for birding?
    A: There are many, starting from Subject detection, through limiting the focus area to a smaller one, to using AF limiter on the lens (depending on the birds distance). There are different set ups for birds stills and birds in flight - especially in focusing modes as well as in shooting modes (single versus sequential or even procapture). If you want to learn the most about it, read this great OM-1 manual by our pro ambassador Petr Bambousek: www.sulasula.com/en/om-1-for-wildlife-photography-pdf-en/
    Q: For Starry sky, does your target box need to fill a large part of the sky? Or does it even matter where the focus box is?
    A: When using Starry sky AF mode, you can choose from Small, Middle or Large focusing areas. It is recommended that you point this focusing area to one of the brighter stars on the sky, but not necessary.

      @formermpc10 No. I prefer the high resolution OLED EVF, stacked sensor, bird tracking, and high FPS bursts for birds in flight.

      There is something special with this camera. After two weeks i returnd it to the dealer to send it to OM. The focus in most of my shots didn't correspond to the info in OM workspace, most images soft with my 12-40 pro and my 75 f1.8. Got now my EM1 mk2 back from my son which he got as gift from me. The pics now are as they should be.....
      Directly after the purchase i made an upgrade of the OM1 into version 1.5
      I'll will see what happens after i get the cam back....

    I tried enabling AF Limiter in OM1 with the 150-400 Pro lens - it does not work. Is there any reason for this?

  • @chrisross100

    Interesting video. I am seeing a problem in CAF + TR with a small single point and place the square over the subject and it briefly focuses on that point and tracking then kicks and tracks something invariably closer to the camera. Only really noticable with macro work and the subject plane not parallel to the camera so there are parts of the frame closer and further way. It effectively makes C-AF + TR unusable for very small subjects. Is there a setting soemwhere to force the camera to track what it initially focuses on?

      I've just sent back an OM-1 for a refund because I lost faith in the autofocus. In fact, to be more accurate, I never developed any faith in it in the first place. Desktop tests resulted in repeated single point focus locks when the area under the point was grossly out of focus. I'll stick with Nikon for the moment and maybe check out the OM-1 MkII when it arrives.

    Hey Tomáš, missed the live video, but I'll watch it now. I just bought recently Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and I'm not happy how it's focusing on my OM-1. Is there some change in how OM-1 is working with the third party lenses?

    • @tomasviktora9288
      @tomasviktora9288 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anastas. I would suggest, that you use S-AF mode with one of the smaller focusing areas. Than it should be OK. I would not expect extremely fast C-AF focusing with this particular lens.

      Hi Tomas, thank you so much for this fantastically helpful video. I particularly loved your suggestion for the custom settings for targeting when shooting Macro. Would it be cheeky to ask what all of your settings are for bird photography. For example, do you use mechanical shutter, CAF + tracking, what targeting area, etc? Many thanks.

      @@tomasviktora9288 I'm using the face detection and not quite happy with the results. I'm thinking only for the 25mm PRO lens now! 🤭

    Why not do a firmware update that makes this camera's focus on par with the top in the industry? Fix the focus tracking outside the AI presets. Add human AI. I loved my OM-1 for birds, dogs, air shows and nature. That was all great. But as soon as I shot anyone in a helmet the eye/face detect was useless and the focus struggled. My hit ratio dropped substantially. Canon R6 II focuses better and the Sony A7 Iv is IMO even better than the Canon. The focus tracking just WORKS. I shoot two systems now, but as soon as my Sony kit is where I need it to be I'll be parting with the Olympus gear I have. Unless the day comes where OM systems stops thinking like the idiots who ran Olympus. Olympus was narrowminded and refused to think outside the box. They were happy doing what THEY wanted to do and they lost their ass. I can see this happening again. There is nothing wrong with making your camera more well rounded. You can still market it to the tiny nature audience. But they are going to lose out on a lot of market share over one simple thing they ignore, and that's dumb.

    Any specific focus setting recommendations for photographing whales?

    • @tomasviktora9288
      @tomasviktora9288 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, you will not be able to use the subject detection mode in this case. So I reccomend to choose small AF point, moving it to the position, where you want to have its eyes (as soon as they apear from the water) and then just concentrate on the composition, making sure, that your AF point is aimed at the right place. And of course, do not forget sequential shooting. You may also combine it with C-AF.

  • @formermpc10

    I appreciate this but am disappointed in the OM-1.
    I was hoping to learn how to get my OM-1 to focus better but, alas, maybe what I deal with is just its deficiencies since I've got an understanding of how it's supposed to work.
    I've been very disappointed with Subject Detection (birds) to the point that I call it Subject Distraction. It stays off.
    As Robin Wong's video shows SD works well if the bird is about 15 meters or closer.
    If you've shot birds for a while you might find SD gets in your way.

    This is why leica is successful right here. We buy cameras to take photos. All I hear ( and no offense to the poster. You're just doing your thing ) is we added a bunch of modes that most are completely useless and that's why the price is high. A leica is "pay me and you'll get amazing simplicity out of the box.. it will fit in your pocket, you'll forget it's not a point and shoot yet photos 20x better than this camera.

      I don't get why olympus does this though and I have an om-1 , om1m3 and many em5s of the past. Instant regret when I got this camera two weeks ago. Everything in my soul said switch and use like a Fuji Film xt5 but nope. I take the om1 out with the 90mm macro lense and sit there going this is rhe same boring crap as years before
