  • How to Clean Antique Bottles! Before and After..... Advanced tumbler setup from Jar Doctor!
    This week I show my new technique for cleaning antique bottles. This is probably the worse part about digging bottles or bottle hunting haha! It can be super tough to get the bottles to look how you want and this is the best way that I have found!

    I have been tumbling for years. Great video but never use 600 cutting compound on bottles with embossing or when it comes out there will be no embossing left.

    On the double tumbler have you tried putting a third tube on top of the bottom two to see if it will tumble also. if it will turn ok you might have to make some kind of guide to keep it centered on the two bottom tubes. You may have to put tubes the same size on the bottom. Just threw it out to see if it will stick. not seeing the tumbler in person, it may not be possible. I like your videos I love old bottles.

    I have A LOT of antique bottles to clean. My neighbor works on demolition, cleanup, and construction sites in Boston, and he keeps finding and giving me these beautiful antique bottles. Most of them were salvaged from 100+ year-old commercial buildings in Boston. I have everything from those little 1800's-era medicine bottles-some with ground-glass stoppers-beer and soda sizes, to big ones for wine, fruit, etc. Many are very dirty from being buried for ages. I started swishing their insides with a clean sandy slurry (by hand), but my arms got tired real quick.
    ANYWAYS…your bottles are coming out beautifully. I checked out Jar Doctor's website, and those seem like great products. It's an excellent concept, and I wager I couldn't build something cheaper. Thanks for sharing!

    Thought about building something like that several years ago, got the 'can" part down , trouble with the pullys and motor set up sold it to a guy to clean bullet brass...worked OK.

    I bought the Jar Doctor tumbler over 10 years ago and it is the best thing out there for bottle polishing in my opinion and worth the price. I dug old bottles for over 30 years and am still cleaning them. Much fun

  • @jimthompson9992

    Wow! That seemed pricey until you break down the unit to its parts and price them out...a decent 120 volt motor can, by itself, be expensive...then add in all the other smaller item...adds up fast! So I guess in the final analysis...probably about right if you tried to piece it out and build one yourself. Great video Brandon! 👍👍

    I know the "Jar Doctor " ,You can find him at most big bottle shows .I'm from Indiana where he once lived . Dave will teach you what you need to know , nice guy all around . I bought my parts from him but made my tumbler. If you don't like the cost , try making them & see how that turns out ,ha. He sells good material . I can turn 5 bottles I will add this , the tube or canister for the bottle shown in this video when ready to turn will weigh over 25 lbs . so I tumble a lot of weight . Awesome video

    I've seen my Mates here in Oz use different types of wet & dry sand paper to remove some scratches. It's worked really well to & hasn't effected the bottle at all but the opposite. Love your videos & the excitement in your voice when you score a good bottle.

If you can do 2 - 3 bottles, maybe be a source for other collectors that can't afford such a set-up. Do bottle cleaning as a side hustle. Make this expensive device help pay for itself by offering it for the new collectors.

  • @johnjohnson645

    I found that the best final polish for your bottles is the CPP aluminum oxide polish from Johnson Brothers Lapidary in California. It beats Jar Doctors polish hands down. It leaves no black foam to deal with and the bottles come out sparkling like a diamond with no need to do a final wash and try to scrub off residue. It costs the same @ $8.50 per pound. Not dissing Jar Doctor, just offering an alternative polishing media.

    • @adventurearchaeology
      @adventurearchaeology  ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I’m developing my own tumbler line I’m also researching new medias. Have you ever tried the plastic pellets vs the copper?

    • @johnjohnson645
      @johnjohnson645 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried using plastic pellets as a filler to use less copper but there is no alternative to adequate copper coverage on your bottles. They came out with black residue especially around the necks. I tried different percentages but went back to straight copper.

    @sonnypate6808 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you made a very wise investment. For instance, just say that you get $50 more for a real good bottle, by using it. You do that 20 times it's paid for it's self. All the profit you make after that is pure profit. Plus all of the lower priced bottles that you improve the value on. I bet it pays for it's self in a year.👍

    $!00.00 seems a bit high for a tube. Wonder if you could find a section of the proper size (or close to it) PVC pipe at a home store, to use?

    • @ronaldwood6324

      I have some PVC tubes but you need them to be very round or the stopper won't fit well and the weight will not slide of tumble even . The ones the Jar Doctor sells are a bit clear so you can see the action . Your better off buying good stuff ,I learned the hard way . ha

    I've been looking to make a scaled down version of one of these, for all the tiny poison and perfume bottles I find. They're sometimes too fragile to clean by hand.
    Also, you can reuse the compound water at least 2 times, when sieving your copper, tip the compound water into a jug. It'll save you a little money.
    Keep on digging, friend! 👍

    • @BlockchainToTheFace
      @BlockchainToTheFace 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If they’re too fragile to clean by hand, this machine will demolish them

    • @jimmyrustler8983
      @jimmyrustler8983 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BlockchainToTheFace Well, not so much fragile, but more fiddly, it's sometimes impossible to find a brush to fit. I have been having good results using weak magnets with sponge glued to them, it works a bit like a fishtank glass cleaner.
      I'd use a very small motor on a miniature bottle tumbler, with rubber washers between every screw point. Ideally a 12v DC motor tuned down to about 35rpm. 👍

    I have a fanta from the late 40s, still full and sealed. Canada production, where do you find the value of this gem? Found it when we were demolishing an old legion hall.

      Full bottles don't really add much money to their value, a 1940s machine made Fanta isn't really collectable.

    Interesting. The bottles came out great. How bad's the motor noise?

    So what do you do if you can't afford a Jar Doctor, or if you're just getting started and aren't ready to make that kind of a purchase?
