The film features the voices of Chris Evans as accomplished Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, Uzo Aduba as his commander and best friend Alisha Hawthorne and Peter Sohn as Sox. Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi and Dale Soules lend their voices to the Junior Zap Patrol’s Izzy Hawthorne, Mo Morrison and Darby Steel, respectively, and James Brolin can be heard as the enigmatic Zurg. The voice cast also includes Mary McDonald-Lewis as onboard computer I.V.A.N., Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Commander Burnside, Efren Ramirez as Airman Diaz, and Keira Hairston as Young Izzy. Directed by Angus MacLane (co-director “Finding Dory”), produced by Galyn Susman (“Toy Story That Time Forgot”) and featuring a score by award-winning composer Michael Giacchino (“The Batman,” “Up”), “Lightyear” opens only in theaters on June 17, 2022.

I used to love Buzz Lightyear: Star Command when I was a kid and I feel like I'm crazy when I talk about it to other people because literally no one remembers it but me.

It even had lots of memorable quoted which I noticed no one but I cares for.
Thus came out before I can remember yet I remember this.
I remember the show so hard. I loved XR and Miera Nova so much.

@@dendanskehelt4296 Nope! He didn't do voice work in the show. I think that Tim Allen did the voice for the pilot first, but since they couldn't get him for the show, they brought in Warburton?? I could be wrong.

I was wondering why the show wasn't on Disney+, since the show rocked (Even built my own X-R in school). So finding out it was not liked by a Pixar higher up was both disappointing, and eye opening, since you never hear of it. Hopefully, that won't be the case in the future.
I think it's even more clear now that Lightyear was announced... They're either going to drop it to coincide with the release of the movie... Or are going to retcon it and hope we don't notice. 😶

I always imagined the ending to this show being the Toy Story popping out the VHS/DVD after the last episode with Woody telling Buzz how great the cartoon was and Buzz saying he was glad to share the experience with everyone while looking at the camera. Too bad it never reached such an ending.

Well, you should pick up a comic called “The Return of Buzz Lightyear”. It introduces a Star Command series character (not spoiling who) and provides a sort of suitable ending to Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and connected the series to Toy Story.
This is a fun concept, being the canonical series that Toy Story’s Buzz toys are based on. Very meta.
As a kid I thought that was cool. Kinda sad there was never one for woody but I suppose it makes sense
In the movie that was announced we find out Buzz was canonically based on a real astronaut who will be the main character of this new movie.

Dude it pisses me off that anyones against this show. Its such a sick concept to have a tv series for the toy to be based on. And they did such a good job on it. They need to do right and put it on the platform.
as someone who loves the show: i can understand people not liking it cause of how corny it is but i feel like some of what makes it work is how buzz is in toy story 1.

There's always a show/movie Disney and Pixar hates and want to pretend never happened; this show, Treasure Planet,Atlantis, and Aaron Stone...But not us... not us.
Haha, Aaron Stone is literally the definition of obscurity in the Disney XD catalog. Like, one of the very initial shows they started on with I'm In The Band, Zeke and Luther, Kickin It and Lab Rats. An era that they practically prefer to be dormant on

Both the Buzz Lightyear series and the movie are rejected by Disney and Pixar, it wasn't even add it to Disney+ and people don't know it existed, but we will keep it alive.
This needs to be put on Disney+ it's a nostalgic cartoon that was more memorable than Lightyear
Pixar for the last twenty years has been trying to bury that show because they weren’t involved in making it.

I had strong memories of this show but with the release of Lightyear, and none of my friends remembering the show, I was convinced it was all some fever dream and the show was never real. As soon as you played the opening song my eyes lit up and I remembered everything I liked about the show growing up. THANK YOU!! hopefully it makes its way to Disney plus!
I was really hoping there’d be influence of this show in Lightyear. Maybe that’s why I was disappointed. This series had so much life to it. I found the movie somewhat boring even though I wanted to like it out of spite
That’s what Pixar was hoping for. Unfortunately for Pixar, everyone remember the cartoon and they kept whining and questioning where the characters from the show were. Pixar eventually had to say something to shut them up since they didn’t want actually make the show canon.
I feel that way about the video game tied to this show.
The new Lightyear movie should have been an adaption of Star Command.

Fun fact: the director of Lightyear confirmed that Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is now a spin-off of the 2022 movie (at least in the Toy Story universe).

You know, if Allen hadn’t re-dubbed the lines for the pilot movie, then in-universe, the canonical voice for Buzz Lightyear would be Warburton, with Allen as a cheap impersonator used for the action figure!

This tv show was my freaking childhood! It was supposed to be a spin off of toy story that shows Buzz in what he was meant to be a space ranger, what’s not to like? It’s brilliant!

I can’t find my copy of the movie. Which is why I’m here, I’ve been looking all over the internet to see if I can find the movie.
Really wish Tad Stones had full creative freedom! Really interesting to find out it could've been a Star Trek esque take.
But I'm still happy and greatful with what we got.
The final show was still pretty Star Trekish, with what is basically a Federation of planets and a Starfleet.
Disney plus will not be perfect until they bring this gem back

Tad Stones would have made an excellent script for the film. Everything he does is pretty funny.
This is the very first Jace Diehl video I've seen and lemme just say...HOLY SHMOLY. The editing is phenomenal. You, sir, have the makings of a beautiful TH-cam channel!
XR was the best character, was hoping he would make an appearance in the main movies as another toy sold for the buzz lightyear line.
XR and Booster were so fun.

As a kid, I somehow ended up assuming that this show came first and Toy Story was the spin-off.
Same here in fact when I watched the pilot episodes I was also expecting woody to appear since the little green aliens did
OMGosh. I was exactly the same. Well not exactly, I was just confused and thought that Buzz hadn't realized he was a toy yet. At 5 years old I was still new to the whole T.V. show continuing plot of movie thing. Sub-fiction was just way too complex an idea for me.
Just wanted to comment that the video is really well put together! Interesting, great edits, and I learned about a new show to check out w/ the kids :)

You know, it's weird, he notes Tim Allen having to ADR over Patrick Warburton's Buzz lines, but Tim's lines sounded way more natural in the movie, whereas Patrick's lines sound like he's having to adjust to Tim's timing. I dunno, maybe Patrick did a lot of the original lines, Tim ADR-ed over it, but they had to redo Patrick's lines via ADR for some reason?
Likely the later or maybe even when doing it originally Patrick might have been trying to sound more like Allen with how he tends to talk.
@@JohnWilliams-wl9px I like them both, Allen was awesome to voice during the dvd movie and Ive always been a fan of Warburton, tho i still can never decide which was my fav of Warburtons roles between Buzz and Kronk. Kronk did make me laugh more. But still warburton is one of my fav Disney Voice actors alongside the awesome Jim Cummings!
Well Tim Allen was better when he did the movie because it was serious and dark tone in it. In TV show version, Patrick did fine job than he did originally in the movie.
@@peepsg If you ask me, I feel that the Tim Allen lines were AFTER the Patrick Warburton ones in terms of production, especially when Tim’s lines don’t really lip sync that well in the vhs version of the Adventure Begins.
@@robbiewalker2831 well I heard that actually, but Patrick was better in tv series than he did in the movie my opinion. I mean Tim Allen is better actor for Buzz Light Year for serious tones that he did for the movie and Patrick acted a comedy buzz, but he least had something in the show that made him little different than he did the movie

Star Command was so cool, the failure of the new Lightyear movie made me remind that Buzz already had a great story based on his 'Toy storyline'.

Fun Fact: Boom Studios made some Toy Story Comics. In it Booster appears as a toy and just like Buzz in the first movie he to really believes he's from Star Command.

This was the project that i could believe more that inspired Andy for getting a Buzz Lightyear than the Lightyear movie.
It always bugged me going on the buzz light-year ride and it having no connection to the show like they had a golden opportunity but they did a weird mix of buzz's show/videogame origin with star command but still incorporated that he's still a toy, fighting other toys on the ride. I remember as a kid having seen the movie and really liking the cadet characters (Mira Nova being my favorite for her ghost powers) and being disappointed by their exclusion in anything after the show.
This old stuff blows the new stuff outta the park!
The virgin lightyear vs. Chad Lightyear of Star Command
This was one of my favorite series back in the day along with Ducktales Darkwing and Rescue Rangers
This show is even better now that the movie came out and tried to do what the show did so perfictly.
Would've been cool to see toy versions of the Star Command crew in a Toy Story film or short, perhaps we could see them in the franchise again in Forky Asks a Question or even a Star Command revival now than John Lasseter can no longer get in the way.
I always thought at the time when John Lasseter was the previous director of TS4, that he would allow the Star Command crew to be in the movie but then I realized that HE was the exact reason why we never saw them again and why the series got cancelled after 2001.
Now that Pete Docter is the CEO of Pixar, I hope he can give the greenlight on making TS5 featuring Buzz’s teammates.
Would rather not have another Toy Story movie, the franchise has enough films as is. It should just continue through spin-offs like the period between 3 and 4.
The closest I've seen to this is Mira and Booster being adapted into separate Toy Story... things.
There's some educational Buzz Lightyear "game" (software) that uses the Toy Story visual aesthetic, but where Buzz is a real space ranger with his own ship, and Mira is there, redesigned in the Toy Story art style, and it looks so weird. I can't find the footage I saw, nor the image I used anymore, so here's the moment I used it in a video a few years ago, so you can see how terrifying she looks.

@@locklear308 because I’d rather spend £7 a month instead of buying a few dozen movies and a ton of seasons of tv shows.
It’s also a lot more convenient than spending 10 minutes finding the dvd box, putting it in the machine and watching unskipable ads.
I’m not saying it’s necessarily bad, or you’re wrong or wanting it this way, but i personally prefer Disney +.
Besides, if there’s a movie or tv show I really like I’ll still buy the DVD just so that I can watch it if the WiFi ever goes out or on a long car journey.
You know it's funny how the lightyear movie is making everyone loved the Saturday morning tv show that the Pixar higher-up hating it.
Is anyone else SICK of Disney changing and/or rebooting things? I HATE almost everything they have put out in the last....probably decade or so? A few of the MARVEL movies were good, and Phineas & Ferb was good, but pretty much everything else has been rotten. I am honestly surprised that we have gotten as much of the good older content on Disney+ as we have.
Lightyear isn't a reboot, a reboot would be using the same characters from Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command, but in a different universe as if the events of the original series never happened. This doesn't use any of the characters from that movie at all, except for Buzz and Zurg, but that's because it's based on Toy Story and not Star Command's versions of them.

Lightyear is nothing like a 1995 movie. It's as if, in a movie, cartoon, comic or whatever, in the 1960's somebody throws in a movie that's clearly a Star Wars rip off as "Oh yeah, that's the movie that was released last year!". Or a 1958 Batman Comic and using All Star Batman and Robin by Frank Miller...
Also, in a 1995 movie that, apparently, is intended also for a youger audience and merchandise driven... you wouldn't have seen any LGBTQ Content... it would've been torn to shreds by moral guardians.
A "Star command" like movie would've made much more sense to be that 1995 movie the show was based on.

Oh come on, "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" was a Great show, it was one of the coolest Spin-Off series ever made.
This video is already over a year old so the production value and getting that friggin interview even at the size you are now is insane. Super great video.
After watching the new Buzz trailer staring Chris Evans it seems that Pixar really wants to erase anything that this show had to do with the character. They even gave him a new partner.

I wasn’t even paying attention to the trailer at first, then I heard a female voice and thought for a second that Mira Nova was in it, which got me immediately interested, and then I realized that the female voice was not Mira Nova and I realized I didn’t want to watch the new movie anymore.

I seriously love this show sm. I found a "boxset" (bootlegged I'm assuming) of both seasons on eBay, so for my birthday years ago I got that and a toy of XR. It's so cool hearing from the creator and seeing the behind the scenes with the actors. I really hope Disney+ adds the show!!

Disney+ hasn't added the show yet, but you can request it by going to the Disney+ Help Center, clicking "Give Feedback," and selecting "Request a film or show" from the dropdown. Don't know how much good it'll do, but be sure to ask if you want to see the show back on streaming. It might just work.

this was more "The History of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" than the DefunctTV version...
DefunctTV basically just talked about the show in terms of watching it which really wasnt what I was expecting or wanted, explaining characters and such.
It really surprised me around halfway going "is he going to talk about something else?"

All DefunctTV did was describe what the show was, hardly a "history." If the only people that would watch the video are familiar with the show why would he just rehash it?

In hindsight, having Tim Allen ADR on the lines felt wrong; because the TV show Buzz is not suppose to be the same as Toy Buzz.
I remember watching thr show when I was a kid. Sadly, I guess nothing from this will be on the new movie. Was actually hoping there would be.
3 years later, Disney still refuses to put Buzz Lightyear of Star Command on Disney+ and went out of their way not to make any mention of this show in the making of the new Buzz Lightyear movie

I really liked this separate movie/TV show when I was growing up.
They felt quite a bit confused about what the Lightyear movie was "meant" to be, in universe. Tbh. i personally feel like they WANTED it to be a reboot/ to wipe out "Of Star Command", but then people were getting angry and they went "THat's the movie the show is 'based on'! It's the 'original work' that the Series is a flanderized, kiddified rip off of!"

Lightyear is nothing like a 1995 movie. It's as if, in a movie, cartoon, comic or whatever, in the 1960's somebody throws in a movie that's clearly a Star Wars rip off as "Oh yeah, that's the movie that was released last year!". Or a 1958 Batman Comic and using All Star Batman and Robin by Frank Miller...
Also, in a 1995 movie that, apparently, is intended also for a youger audience and merchandise driven... you wouldn't have seen any LGBTQ Content... it would've been torn to shreds by moral guardians.
The last paragraph you made is kinda funny as around that time, an episode of Star Trek aired with two women kissing. Let’s face it. People only freak out over same sex couples due to the ridiculous claims evangelicals made up to stir up hate in recent years

I love how the new one tries so hard to claim it is the definitive movie that Buzz is based on yet they literally show the toys watching the 2D movie on tape.
Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is one of my Top Favorite Animated Series of all Time. Glad morw people are finally appreciating this show this series highly deserves

It's a better show than it looks. Some episodes have pretty cheap looking animation but others have some lovely looking animation. It's actually pretty funny too, though a different type of humor to the films. Sad it seems to have been all but forgotten. No DVD release.
Buzz Lightyear of Star Command was a very important show to me as a kid. Whenever I'd come home from a tough day, this show brought me so much comfort and happiness.
