  • Flying cars have been around a lot longer than you think! Several different inventors created working models in the 1900s. The Taylor Aerocar, the brainchild of Molt Taylor of Longview, WA, stands out from the crowd. Even the Ford Motor Company considered mass producing the Taylor Aerocar!
The Museum of Flight recently digitized two vintage films of the Taylor Aerocar and Taylor Aerocar III, showing the plane in flight and driving around on the ground. Check it out!

The footage was really great to see and the commentary was enjoyable and informative. The burned in closed captioning blocked large portions of the footage that I wanted to see.

I completely agree, captioning is for the hearing impaired not for the visually impared.

An idea ahead of it's time. Taylor was a creative genius, he told me the the biggest problems facing flying cars were insurance and the FAA requirement that maintenance/repair be by an A&P mechanic.

I grew up in Longview. When I was a kid my buddies and I would ride our bicycles over to the (old) Kelso Airport to watch Molt flying his Aerocar. It was not unusual to see Molt flying between Longview and Portland.

My father was a private pilot and engineer at Ford and was the person assigned to visit Molt and evaluate the Aerocar. He flew it several times and said it was a pretty good airplane, but a lousy car. Not surprising since Molt wasn't an automotive engineer.
Molt came to visit us in Detroit several time and insisted that I call him "Uncle Molt." We'd catch up with him every year at Oshkosh. I remember once going to dinner with him, my Dad, and some of Molt's friends. At the table were Dick (RIP) and Burt Rutan, wives, some VP from General Dynamics, and other notables.

Not sure how you can talk about this car without mentioning Bob Cummings who used the car in his TV show. I would guess most people older than 60 first saw this car/plane on his show. I know I did. A lot of actors were pilots. Arthur Godfrey was a popular pilot in the Leesburg VA area and the municipal airport there was originally his personal air strip and part of his large farm.

Nice video but the embedded captions are too large. Rally hurts the presentation. Particularly because turning on the CC option duplicates the overly-large print on the screen.
