    Hi there. I think the problem with most of your plants that are not doing well is the soil. Hoya roots are very delicate so they need a very chunky, airy substrate. Do you have access to perlite and orchid bark in Nigeria? Hoya also like a good bit of humidity as well. Also, the plants need good air circulation around them, especially since its really hot in your country. Definitely try changing the soil on your plants. Add bio char or charcoal bits, perlite, coco bark, to the soil base, also with a good soil. Make it chunky. Hope this helps. Good luck!

    ZZ is an aroid , they need a chunky soil mix, not just normal soil. Hoya also need rocky soil mix. Here is the thing, I know a lot of youtubers say that plants dont need special soil, they use normal soil mix and it works fine for them, but then they post another video showing how many plants they struggle with, to keep plants healthy you need to provide them with soil suitable for that plant or at least close to it. at this point ingredients themselves are not as important as the texture and moisture absorbtion of the soil. If you pot jungle plants in to soil that compacts in to cement after a few months, than no wander your plants are dying. Fine texture soil does not have enough air circulation for the roots to stay healthy, it needs to be chunky.

    I moved my bop to the bathroom and the stress level it used to cause me dwindle.
    I wait for the soil in my zz to completely dry before i water it again. Since doing this I no longer see any yellow leaves.
    I owe most of my houseplant success to Planta (app) and my local plant nursery owner. Every time i go into her shop to buy a new plant she gives me lots of plant care tips.

    When I tell you I resonate with this title, I am screaming it. POTHOS die within weeks when I get them, and yet so-called difficult plants like some anthuriums or the more finicky carnivorous plants are thriving with me. I love and hate this.

  • @alexcatrea

    I got you when it comes to Zz - they need to dry out, and then dry some more between waterings. Seriously works so well. I have left mine for months before watering and there's been no issue. Check the stems are wrinkled and if you can check the tops of the Zz rhizome potatoes too. If in doubt leave it another ten days. Then when you do water it - drench it and feed it. These boys are hungry. I love my Zz its the only succulent I can figure out so don't feel bad. My aloes are crispy, they look like I left them in the air fryer.

    I don't know why you would be struggling with white bird of paradise. It is commonly planted here in south Florida and throughout the Caribbean, both as an understory plant and in full sun. I don't think the climate in Jamaica is vastly different from yours and it thrives there. It thrives here as well, and our summers are hot and extremely wet. I have one on my property that grows less than a meter from a retention pond, in heavy rain years the base of the plant can be submerged for short periods.
    I think your problem is actually that the pot is too small for the plant, it should grow a very robust root system. I would suggest repotting it and, If you have access to biochar or ground charcoal, add enough so that it is 30% of your soil mix. Keep it evenly moist and in bright light (not direct sun since the plant is weak).

    Maybe a chunkier mix for the soil, orchid bark, pumice stone, perlite to help with aeration for the roots. I water my ZZ plants once a month, I do not water in the winter. I moved my remaining 3 Hoyas into LECA under a grow bulb (I have no luck with Hoyas) i do not have Dracaena or Calatheas in my collection for the reason of crispy leaves ☹️

    • @TheMillennialPlantDad
      @TheMillennialPlantDad  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It appears Draceana are just as notorious as Calatheas for crispy tips . I’m not really the biggest fan of chunky mixes because they dry out quite fast in my climate especially for the outdoor plants, also they can be quite expensive to make here , but I’ll see how it goes . Thank you ☺️

That Dracena Goldieana is going on my wishlist because I've never seen it and it was gorgeous or at least I think it could be in someone else's care. I also want that local ZZ. It's def a watering issue with the ZZ. I don't water mine until the stems are wrinkly and the leaves are easy to fold. Even then I only water enough to plump them back up I never drench them.

    It’s a learning experience. I researched caladiums and they’re basically similar to some other plants. Keep trying and find the perfect conditions for your plant babies. I almost given up on some but I’ve learned more. And I know I’m in a different part of the world but I had to learn. I’m not sure what advice I could give but maybe since the heat is more intense where you add something to help calm it down for some of the plants. If things don’t work out just let it go. You tried.

    Hi! Costa Rica here 10°N of the equator. We have similar weather!👋🏽 it has been my experience with the ZZ, the one I have growing outside in the ground is happy. The one I have in a pot inside is struggling. The one outside I do nothing with, dry season I drench it with water it once a week and in wet season I don’t do anything to it at all. It seems to have roots crawling along the ground and I never add dirt over them. It’s content to just be. My anthurium grows in a pot, outside, facing south, underneath a huge fishtail palm that gives lots of shade. Pothos like to crawl across the ground on top of leaf litter and dead stumps in the understory. Only in dappled light or full shade. Hope that helps 😬☺️💚

      @TheMillennialPlantDad honestly, I was waiting too long, too. I have 3 small ones in particular that kept getting brown spots. I thought they had fungal issues. Once I gave them the gelato container, everything changed. I still forget about them, because they are located near the end of line. Close to window, where the retail space is limited, so, they better keep up with the Jones.
      Brother, I bought a 4" Gold Star Dracaena online to help me out. This is what helped me realize the others were not getting enough water, often enough.
      I put perlite in the container bottom also because the roots are fast to grow down into this area. Best of Gardening To You, Professor!
