Why Are People Getting Caned In Indonesia? | ASIAN BOSS

  • Indonesia is the world's biggest Muslim-majority country and has been in the international spotlight recently for publicly caning people for their “crimes” under what’s known as “sharia law.” Sharia law is only implemented in Aceh province, and follows Islamic traditions and condemns certain behavior such as drinking alcohol, extramarital affairs and having gay sex. But how do ordinary Indonesians feel about this law? We hit the streets of Jakarta to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Why? Not all things that considered normal, not backward i.e. 'up to date' are correct. What if canning does have has strong reasoning base? If the use of canning does have a positive effect and better compared to other method, why should we forbid it? The law exist to foremost prevent unlawful behaviour and canning does just that. Of course there need to be further research on this, but my point is don't just follow something because it's considered normal or modern. Think before first before accusing something. Thanks

They’re not frightened or afraid that they’ll be caned. Sharia law is only implemented in Aceh, and these interviews are conducted in Jakarta (presumably because journalists are banned from aceh) so there are no direct ramifications to speaking negatively about it. If they’re afraid of anything it’d be the celestial, religious consequence of criticising Allah. Saudi influences on the mosques and Muslim education is disappointingly, ruining the minds of young people. That’s why more of the younger participants seemed more closed minded than the older participants. Lady in the peach hijab said not to judge a book by its cover yet agrees that cutting off someone’s hand if they steal, or public caning for acts like gay sex and extramarital affairs is the right way to do things. There certainly is irony in that.
Edit for a correction: I apologise for misspeaking it was always taught to me as a child in Indonesia by my mother as a hand that would be cut off for stealing. If it is just a finger then I stand corrected. Perhaps it was just an exaggeration to scare me further. Nevertheless I retain that maiming someone for a petty crime like theft is a grossly exaggerated punishment.

I'm indonesian and as someone that's not very religious (even tho i still do the basic prayers everyday) i wouldn't want to go to places that have a very strong religious influence in their area like aceh. There's other places like bali, lombok, papua, and others that're more interesting and diverse. Earlier this year i went to bali and they have the most chill and open minded people there. Even though i'm muslim and the majority people in bali are not, they still give us direction when we asked where's the mosque is placed. I definately think religion should be a personal matter because we saw multiple times when people start to mixed it with politics or laws it became a mess and only divide people which can make them resent each other. Even though majority are muslim there's still people with other religion that live here and i wish islam as a majority didn't act like the boss. But if you are gay no one will hurt you because of sharia law but people will criticize you because of the culture and if you show it so badly then yes you might be hurt because it's not acceptable in the Arabic culture to be gay, yet if you gay you can live normally just don't show it out and no one will care about you, so many gays exists in all Arabic and they live in this way.
People might still get their hand cut of in Saudi Arabia
ONLY (out of 57 Islamic country) yet if the king say this should stop it will stop even in sharia law this is possible because not only Muslims live in these country's. so it's the people and not the religion.
and NO there is no such a thing in like banned atheism in Egypt, the prove is there is so many Egyptian TH-cam channels speaks about atheism even in TV and they even make a lot of money and have big mount of people fallowing them to speak and discuss this topic and yet no one hurts them, they are free and they keep doing it from inside Egypt.
They only way that they get banned is when they turn there channel to hate speech and ask people aggressively to leave Islam,Christianity and Judaism as well. Because no one has right to do so.
fyi in Islam you are free to believe and do anything you wont as long as you don't hurt people in any way and you do respect them and their culture.
its very clear that most of your information's are wrong or extremely limited again thanks to TV and Toxic news, finally if "Sharia law is evil in any way you put it" as you said then why 1,800,000,000 Muslim around the world stick in Islam in both Islamic and non-Islamic country's like US and UK and more? and why Islam is keep growing more and more in non-Islamic country's ? think and read about it from the RIGHT source before you give the answer.. Islam is growing because of birth rates not because of conversion. I'm pretty sure there's more people leaving Islam than joining it. We will never sadly get any sort of news about that because most of them are still in the closet.
Something being in Judaism or Christianity does not make it okay. They're both shitty old religions as well used to control people. Please use better reasoning.
The Quran and the thousands of hadiths that exist out there contradict themselves sometimes.
In one verse or hadith it could say that you can do whatever you want unless you harm someone and in others it would be the absolute opposite.

Sharia law just can be implemented according to several factors. For example if someone steal something they can only be punnished based on some condition one of them is they steal not because they hungry. If the suspect steal because of poverty and the amount no more than 1/4 dinar ( 1 dinar around 2.500.000 IDR) the suspect should not be punnished. It's goverment role to protect the suspect and give them appropiate jobs. Fyi, each province in Indonesia they have own otonomy which means the Indonesia goverment give the authority to province to manage their land and system. The punishment applies to those who do wrong and I feel that sharia law has a deterrent effect on the perpetrators of crime. And I think that whatever form of law (which is made for good) if it is implemented will certainly create a peaceful environment. And I hope the media do not exaggerate more in telling something without being so understanding about the issue, I keep thinking why outsiders are so scared of sharia punishment, Even though we who are within the scope of the law feel safe and peaceful, I hope we can respect each other, the law is there to govern us in the good way, just follow our each other rules whatevr form it is. the comments section shows how different opinions indonesian people have about the sharia law, while in the video, peole kind of agree with the sharia law, indonesian people in the comment section... not.
sharia law only applied in 1 provinces from all 36 provinces in Indonesia, and the law is not fully implemented, since there should not be any sharia law that contradict the government's law (i.e stoning to death because of adultery, cutting hand for thievering, or beheading is not applied, since it contradict the human rights law in indonesia)
so i consider the sharia law in aceh is only, a "lite" version,.
and because the increasing mockery from indonesian people about aceh sharia law, the acehnese people are starting considering to do a referendum to separate them from Indonesia.
the problem is, even if many people don't want aceh to associated with indonesia, the government can't afford to lose aceh to a referendum, since aceh have a vast amount of natural resources, be it liquid gas, oil, gold, and agriculture. some sources say aceh is contributing up to 8% of Indonesia yearly revenue in national budget(APBN).
that's why aceh is given special autonomy to implement sharia law in the first place.
aceh won't lose much to a referendum, because socially, acehnese people are more closer to indonesia neighbouring country, Malaysia.

utsman zulhakim I think one of the reasons as to why the comment section show such different opinions is because it’s a different demographic? They mainly filmed around the streets and outdoors while the Indonesians who are commenting are doing so in English, onto a channel that’s quite international so a lot of them probably had the kind of education that allowed for open minded thinking? I’ve said it before but I really wished the team would’ve interviewed people in areas such as a mall or educational institution to get a range of responses. And yeah you’re super right about everything Aceh related, I actually didn’t know they contributed such a large amount in revenue that’s super interesting.

Pretty happy to see how a lot of people are vocalizing their opinions in the comment section, though!

This is the PG13 version of sharia law. When I was 17 years old I saw a video called “Buried in the sand” it was about the extremes of sharia law. They wrapped a woman who committed adultery from head to toe in a white cloth, then dug her waist deep. Surrounded her with people 10 feet away. All of them threw stones at her, varied in size. Some stones were the size of fists, some were the size of human heads. As the stones hit her you could see stains of red developing. At first she was erect, shaking with fear and anxiety. Then as the stones caved her bones in, you could see her body slump over as she crossed into the afterlife. Sharia law is not pretty. Adultery is wrong but people shouldn’t be punished so savagely.

Sharia law only implemented in Aceh Province, one of 34 provinces in Indonesia. The punishment, for example being caned, only applied for Muslim resident. If non-muslims break the rules, they could choose either be punished with regular law or sharia law. Many of them (i heard pretty much in number) choose to be caned 5 or 10 times instead of be jailed for several months.

Since the focus is on a specific region of Indonesia (as per the video and various comments), it would have been better to show some deeply researched content and include more opinions although it is a very difficult job.

  • @fionafidela

The title itself is very misleading. It should be "why are people getting caned in Aceh, Indonesia" since the Sharia Law only being implemented there in the country. Please don't create unnecessary conflict for a click!

    I don't agree.
We shouldn't make one religion to be the standart of law. What will be happen to another?
If we want a better law, why don't we just create it? Our law is an old law, created by Dutch East Indies.

      You're so childish.
What do you mean twisted stereotypes? It's nothing but facts that some Indonesian Muslims are so indoctrinated that they're intolerant towards sexual and religious minorities.
Of course there are nice Muslim Indonesians and there are places within Indonesia that are nice. But there are plenty of radical Indonesians with a backwards view due to their religious beliefs and that is just a fact.
How aren't the people of Indonesia an authentic source?

Not some random people you meet on the street. You gotta make sure they are people of knowledge ('alim). What i meant by twisted stereotype is islam is already so many times misrepresented in the media.

Indonesia will always be a secular country. Population of Aceh is only like 1.8% of the whole Indonesia, they are a special province for a historic reason and have more autonomy than most other provinces. Unity in diversity is our motto. Some people might not know that the population of Christians in Indonesia is roughly the same as population of the whole Australia lol, yet they'd be quick to share their expert opinions once something like this appear.
