i am from the Philippine Islands myself and i know the feeling too well... i survived Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), the others were not as fortunate as i am... it was like the end of the world... so unbelievably scary...
I think this man is a real man!!! I know there were reporters that tried to do what he did but this man was on the beach I think and tried to cover the Super typhoon!! Man you got balls!! Peace!
harold almoite Thanks Harold, reporters play it safe and don't get into the wind like I did. There are interesting in live broadcasting which has some constraints. I'm also braver than they are, I take risks based on years of experience and I am very comfortable around water - my true element. It was scary though when I couldn't get back to the safety of the lobby where everyone else was.
I'm curious why he was in a swimming pool for awhile - although taking refuge partly underwater would be one way of avoiding windblown debris that could easily kill you.
Wow Mr.Jim,you've got to Camera a deadly typhoon and you are in it to get the video of the super typhoon that anyone cannot survive.Wow,your a patriotic man-(means strong.)
The cottage you were standing behind was the one we stayed in the time we were there. A couple of years before the storm. I saw pics after that the restaurant there down by the sea was just erased.
u are very brave mr jim and i salute u..im a filipino and also experienced the typhoons ultimate power...when i was sheltering..i feel the air sucking on my ears and hard to breath..the storm actually sucked the air out of our shelter....the wind so powerful and i dont wanna be or hear its growling soung again in my entire life
this is the most fantastic video ever caught during yolanda in the philippines,.. other video are somuch boring to see... the video of aftermath,.. video of after the yolanda... theres nothing to see except the destruction that cause... so this video shows how destructive it is... during the yolanda strike... wow.... that so brave of you... thanks.... i hope it has been a long vid 30 minutes to 1 hour maybe... hehehe
Wow! Kuya Jim - parang Signal No. 5 talaga sa Tacloban! 145 miles per hour nga rin yan! O, ibig ko pong sabihin; 235 kilometres per hour. Walang biro na yan!
I watched james reynolds and his friends documentary or video of typhoon haiyan but they only shot a less category 4 wind. This video of jim edds shows what category 5 wind is.
Different angles look different. But winds in both footages are the same. Jim edd's field of view is only 20m, so winds will only take 0.3 seconds to pass the camera. While James's field of view is 50m. The winds will take 0.6 seconds to pass the camera
hi jim im from tacloban saw ur video nice footage in leyte park hotel its near magsaysay where u can see also the san juanico bridge that day i was on dubai anyway lots of my friends die in that area specialy near astrodome,, thanks for the footage
My best guess is that the peak gusts were upwards of 150 mph in this particular clip. That would put these winds right up there with the Charley gas station video and the video of Hugo in Puerto Rico as arguably the strongest winds captured on video I've personally seen myself.
The wind speed recorded in Tacloban was 148mph before it broke at 7:00. The strongest winds occurred in Tacloban at around 7:15-7:25. So according to my estimates, wind speeds in Tacloban peaked at 170 mph. 3:12 is definitely stronger than Charley gas station video
Kevin Lu l Storm Chasing Hi Kevin! I didn't realize that there was an actual wind speed measurement taken in Tacloban. Do you have a link to the data? Thanks!
hurricaneadventures Got it from WeatherUnderground which get data from the local weather stations. Was monitoring that morning and the data just froze at 237km/h for the whole day. Not sure if you can get to past wind speeds though www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:00000.1.98550
there was no peak wind measurement in Tacloban at peak winds as there is no min pressure from the Guiuan radar site during the full passage as power went out. The lowest recorded on the paper graph is 910mb but likely lower. A simple battery powered barometer would have recorded the pressure. When you see wind speeds of 195mph or higher for Haiyan that is estimated based on Satellite interpretation. As the storm winds picked up all power went out and a massive storm surge flooded the coastal areas. So we will never know the true wind speed on the ground. In addition weather survey teams did not get in there before the cleanup began making wind estimates even less reliable.
Jim Edds Exactly, one problem with radar sites is they always go offline right near the peak. Same thing happened with Typhoon Haima, Virac radar site went offline right before the innermost core hit it.
Jim, didn't tacloban city measure 148 mph gust before it broke at 7:00? I am pretty sure the strongest gusts reached 170 mph+. I did a frame by frame calculation of wind speed at 3:12. And I can conclude that the wind speed between 67-85m/s
+crewcutter2030 so true, for me all I had to worry about was the wind coming off the water and just blowing through the Leyte Park - which was on a hill. Knowing that I had a bit more freedom to move around. If I was in town I'd worry more and don't forget the storm surge - that was worse than flying debris. Most people died in the storm surge. I did get hit by a few pieces of that ceramic roofing blowing in the wind. It cut the back of my leg when I tried to get to the lobby. You can see the roofing material shattering when hit by debris in the "Journey to Tacloban" video I produced (also on my channel). It made an awful scary sound. th-cam.com/video/3ZhItkcs9qw/w-d-xo.html
Amazing power of nature! In fact, that wind force is exponentially increasing to it's speed 195mph winds must be true lethal conditions. Much more wind energy than 150mph winds. Maybe unpossible to film those kind of winds without being in a life threatening situation. Great job to document this historic storm.
Grunt Bladefin non taken, I jumped into the resort pool because it was between the shore and where I needed to be - the safety of the lobby. It just so happens that there was a really good shot there I couldn't pass up and I figured it was safer in and under the water than out in the open. Eventually even the pool was unsafe as the wind picked up even more. After I got my pool shots I crawled out of the pool literally on hands and knees and ran for the closest villa. Tried to run to the lobby buy ceramic roof particles peppered my bare legs resulting in a deep cut, although it was not that long. I didn't release this until I got back to the US but sure felt the burning hot sensation. It was another 25 min before I was brave enough to attempt the lobby sprint again. This time somehow making it.
Wow. Only time I've ever jumped into a pool during a hurricane was in Orlando, Florida haha (during hurricane Charlie), much safer. Thank you for sharing details and expanding on the video content. Just be careful out there! Can't post your amazing footage and share stories if you get too beat up!
i am from the Philippine Islands myself and i know the feeling too well... i survived Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), the others were not as fortunate as i am... it was like the end of the world... so unbelievably scary...
Holy crap...mad respect for being out in the middle of that.
Amazing. I'd reckon that those winds were sustained near 145mph in some of those clips. Would absolutely love to have access to more of your footage.
The winds of the northern eyewall was actually 170mph

Mr.Jim, may I know what are the top strongest storms you've encountered?? Im just curious cause I know you've seen a lot
I'm curious why he was in a swimming pool for awhile - although taking refuge partly underwater would be one way of avoiding windblown debris that could easily kill you.
I was still 2 years old when Typhoon Yolanda hit PH i cant imagine what my family did during that time.

"Super" is the official designation when it reaches 150 mph or more by JTWC
and it call super super if it reaches 200 mph. Thats why they called it super haiyan (super saiyan storm).
it reached 285 kph. stronger than katrina in 2005
gustiness up to 320 kph
Freedom Philip Lachica As of today,"Katrina"Is no longer the 2nd strongest.Typhoon"Hagupit"Is the 2nd strongest.

Hi sir. Can I use some part of this video for a presentation?
this is man is not afraid at all just continue filming
This was 9 years ago today.
Change your title to "Super Typhoon Haiyan - Tacloban City [Extreme Footage]"
You will get a lot more views; you should have got like 1M.
I watched james reynolds and his friends documentary or video of typhoon haiyan but they only shot a less category 4 wind. This video of jim edds shows what category 5 wind is.
But James reynolds and his friends documentary shot in tacloban. Why Cat.4 only?thats Cat.5 too.
Same ok. james caught documentary video in tacloban.Jim caught that video in tacloban too..Commonsense

He literally weathered the storm.
hi jim the one you were in the water, where exactly where you then?

the super typhoon haiyan wind speed is 195 mph after 1min 235 mph wind speed
No, 1 min wind speed of haiyan is 195 mph. Not 235
WOW! Take care Jim!!
Such a brave man 👍🙏
i guess u never noticed the storm surge was coming
Nice day to set sail.
Showdown the boat will fly too
its like inside an f3 tornado but larger range and yes i live in the philippines in manila
I'm finding the footage of super typhoon Angela /rosing that hit here in metro manila on 1995 which is stronger than typhoon haiyan.
angela /rosing was 165 mph at landfall while haiyan/yolanda is 195 at landfall
typhoon haiyan is more stronger than angela, because typhoon haiyan is the deadliest and strongest typhoon in history
and you still manage to take a selfie...
yeah, it just sort of worked out that way in the crazy winds!
Jim Edds i salute you. O7
Jim, how strong were those winds??
I think my strongest was 150mph give or take. Now 195mph would have blown everything away and I would not be here.

Jim Edds OMG!
You have balls, what a video!
it was a resort pool so not near as bad as the storm surge that went across the airport - that would have been scary.
Scary typhoon.
typhoon in traditional Chinese is 颱風 :)

he was so stupid. we think that he was on the flood water but no he was on the pool dipping him self . and so very crazy. :)
