U called it right..it looks like the mandalorian sime they used the san techniques...wrapping the sets with a screen and projecting background images creating accurate light atmosphere...u rock!
I worked on this film! The lighting looks great because we used projections rather than green screen. So all the clouds/light was actually there on the day. Everything you see, the actors also saw while filming. Much like Mandalorian.
@@JamesVSCinema it was definitely a unique experience. I didn’t work on the whole show, just the parts they filmed in New Orleans (St Francisville actually). You are not the only one dude, Olga Kurylenko is just breathtaking. They used the same virtual set which uses LED screens instead of your usual green screen background. God it's so fucking gooood!! My favorite scenes are when Jack is setting up the drone as a bomb - the camera panning around him and the drone, switching back and forth between that and Morgan, and close ups of Tom. SO GOOD! And obviously the scene at the end, "How can a man die better, than facing fearful odds? In the ashes of his fathers - and the temples of his Gods." So. Fucking. Good.

Still now, this movie is so underrated and undiscovered. Such a musically and cinematically beautiful movie with some beautiful philosophy in it as well.
@@n0body550 You're definitely right. I show this film to Special Education Instruction classes. Cruise is 'all of us' who grow over the movie and Hoffman is LD persons who are still capable of function (varies by person). The film is a fanstastic example of empathy and acceptance. Not Cruise's best performance, Last Samurai or Magnolia take that cake, but perhaps the best film he is in.
I forgot that Melissa Leo was in this as the teleconferenced supervisor. She transforms herself into so many characters in so many movies! She was memorable in "Winter's Bone," which starred Jennifer Lawrence before "The Hunger Games" made her famous. It certainly led to her casting in that series.
The director, Joseph Kosinski did Tron: Legacy as well. Which also has the very clean look you're noticing here. It's a style of his for sci-fi. The man has a gift for stunning sci-fi visuals. He also started in commercials which is probably where the commercial vibes came from. Those insane drones... for me it's the sounds they make. The sound design feels like it is really coming from them, echoing and reverberating.
The Director of this movie was a VFX director before he directed feature films. His only other full feature before this was Tron 2, and the VFX in that was also stunning.
About the CGI: you should watch a making of. They used back projection for the sky base, that is why it looks a bit like Mandalorian and that is why the lighting looks so cool. the entire surrounding is back projection.
You're slowly working your way through the Andrea Riseborough oeuvre without realizing it. She's truly a chameleon. Hopefully you'll get to Possessor and the series ZeroZeroZero at some point.
locations are real , vehicles are real , the bike was operational. the plane also moved in all directions. the light at the "house" was from a 360 camera on a mountain that rec 24/7 and the they made surrounting monitors that showed that 360 recording
The sound design in this movie is insane. I absolutely loved the sounds the drones made. They sounded so menacing. I know a lot of people don't like Tom, and that's okay, but I personally feel that this guy was built for science fiction. Both this and Edge of Tomorrow show how great he can be in this kind of role. This is such a great story. A very simple one, but one that's delivered almost perfectly. The scene at the end when Tech 52 meets his daughter is so amazing. The score to this movie is absolutely incredible. I've been a huge fan of M83 for many years now, but their collaboration with Joseph Trapanese knocks this one out of the park. Their "I'm Sending You Away" track is one of my all-time favourite pieces. Oh, and don't even get me started on how amazing the visuals are. Is the movie perfect? Hell, no, but it's still one of my favourite science fiction movies of all time. James, I don’t think you’re geeking out at all!
Oblivion is a criminally underrated movie. Especially the soundtrack is one of my favorites. And the visuals are amazing, I love the broken moon in the sky and that shot revealing what looks like a rock ravine to be the gap between the dirt-covered skyscrapers of a city. I agree that it would have been great to get more world-building and lore, it probably would have made for a great limited series. Funny you mentioned Glados. I always got a lot of Portal vibes from the film, maybe because of all the white aesthetics and rounded shapes...
It's funny that you compared the effects to the Mandalorian. They actually used similar effects. The woman looking out of the window is actually looking at a huge screen with the sky projected onto it. This is why the lighting looks so good because it's actually there and not just added in post. That's why you can see the sky in the reflections around the rooms. Tech 049 was the only one that found the oasis which is why the other Techs didn't go there.
I never felt like they needed to flesh out the scavs. Alien with absolutely overwhelming firepower turns up, wipes out humanity and the survivors have to hide under a rock, biding their time. Amazing VFX, but story is just a mishmash of Moon/Terminator/Matrix.
i’ve been watching your reactions since i found your band of brothers videos. absolutely appreciate your commentary and attention to detail so much! i love how you give so much credit to the actors and the people who really designed the entire film to make it the way it is. awesome channel 👏🏼
I saw this in theater when it first came out. Remember telling my wife two things, this film is beautiful and I have to get the soundtrack. I still have a few of the songs in rotation on my phone.
One of the best things about this film is rewatching it. You’ll notice all the actor’s subtleties. Like Becca remembered more and had the same dreams as Jack. Also, I have a fantastic story about seeing this film in theaters, as there was a little boy and his father sitting in front of us. During the pool scene, when she jumps in naked, the boy goes, “Whoaaaaaaaaaa dad…..did you see that pool?!?” We all lost it, including the father.
You know why this reminds you of the Mandalorian? This is one of the first movies to use projection mapping which the Mandalorian uses for everything. That's why the edges are so clean. Everything is lit by the virtual set instead of that weird haloing when you comp out a background
It looks so good because they shot actual footage of the sky and projected it on a screen around the glass house that way all the reflections and lighting would be much more realistic. Mandalorian is similar except their screen as LED. I really
Another great choice. One of those movies I saw once, enjoyed and knew I wanted to go back and figure out more of the world. I'm glad to revisit this through your reaction. Bless!
Fun fact: The title Oblivion is a double meaning. The obvious, Oblivion, being complete destruction. And second, Oblivion as in oblivious. Like the characters in the movie.
5:23 - "I'm getting crazy video game vibes from this." After I first watched this movie around the time it came out, I remember thinking to myself, "Seems like the story would have been more appropriate for a video game than a movie." It was a decent movie, but would have been amazing if it were a video game.
This was filmed mostly in Iceland. The scenes showing the sky around the station that they work out of, were real filmed shots from a high-level observatory in Hawaii, which is above the clouds, and then projected onto screens around the set!!!
I saw this movie when it popped up on a streaming service just looking for something watch and was blown away. It's a great movie and is completely slept on.
I absolutely adore the set design/art design and sound design in this film. So underrated. And upon rewatches, I get serious Death Stranding vibes, one of my favorite recent games.
@@stuartspencer2161 🤣🤣 that would be fantastic. I can just imagine him standing at the door of the ship as its slowly descending to the alien world and then jumping out and screaming "DIVE!!". Also, he's an actual explorer who has gone on expeditions to Antarctica and the jungles of Burma in search of a rare orangutan so yeah would definitely be helpful.
James, you get to see a little bit more of Olga in Hitman (2007). Freeman's quote at the end comes from a poem: “Then out spake brave Horatius, The Captain of the Gate: To every man upon this earth Death cometh soon or late. And how can man die better Than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, And the temples of his gods” ― Thomas Babington Macaulay, Lays of Ancient Rome
With a little work this could make a great video game premise. ESPECIALLY because, IMO, not enough games have a built in narrative reason WHY you get multiple lives. For that reason I actually think Edge of Tommorow would make an awesoe video game.
An amazing and underrated sci-fi film. Though the story maybe a bit cliché to sci-fi fans, what sets this film apart is the absolutely amazing visuals. This film has hands down till this day one of the best shots in any sci-fi film in the scene where you see the shattered moon in the sky with all the debris. Also, the design of the robot drones and even the TET itself are absolutely fantastic.
Gotta say that, not only are you commentating on directing, you're creating your own style. I noticed when the capture went inverted for the reaction. Keep up the good work!
Kosinski’s visual style works so well with sci-fi, and while I’m sure Top Gun will look great, it’s a shame he couldn’t get ‘The Black Hole’ or ‘Tron 3’ off the ground.
The reason it looks like the Mandalorian is because they used the exact same virtual stage creation technology. It’s like a giant round shaped room with screens projected all around that move relative to the cameras and the actors. It works like magic.
Love Love Love this movie dude!!!! Tom Cruise kills at as always. Morgan Freeman is the goat. That twist blew my mind. I love that you highlighted how amazing the CGI was because I always felt so sad that not many people praised it. M83’s soundtrack blew my mind. I’ve been listening to the credits song ever since. Thanks for this.
Jack's house in the sky was a full size set, not CGI. They'd gone to a Hawaiian Volcano and filmed HD sky for ages, morning noon and night. This was then projected on set so the house was lit naturally when filming. CGI replaced by real world effects. The thing I really loved about this movie was the coherence and consistency of the TET design aesthetic. Look at any "army" or major organisation in history, their design/iconography is consistent.
I like this one a bit more than edge of tomorrow & yeah CGI on point. Cgi like that... who can complain about it. I always interpreted that the other clones never went to "that place" because it was out of their zone, but idk
I think there are a few confusing narrative points in this script, but the movie itself is very underrated. I like a lot of the themes and the visuals. This would have made an excellent mini-series. I want more info on the backstory of civilization of people living on the surface. That could be cool.
There is some great extras included on the 2013 Blu-ray of this movie. I would highly recommend a full viewing, and listen to the commentaries. Very insightful. And by now you have obviously been informed that screen projection was indeed used quite a lot in this film, along with other fantastic cinematography methods. Personally I really liked this Twilight Zone-ish, Sci-fi story of a film.
I watch this movie every couple of years, and I'm always so blown away again by it that I immediately watch it again with the commentary on. Such a GREAT movie.
Thank you! Finally someone sees what I saw in this movie. It's close to my favorite (not just Tom Cruise) movie. The soundtrack, in particular, is amazing.
It's code words to determine if the team is deteriorating (from getting memories back) and needs to be pulled out - i.e. exterminated - and replaced by new clones. It makes sense that's in there, and a hint that something is off.
All will be explained in the 'Making of' videos. You'll love it! The director was also the writer. The house is lit by wraparound screens backlit with footage from 360 degree Mauna Loa in Kawaii, Hawaii.
A lot of what you would expect to be fake, in this movie they did it old school. That's why you feel it. And yes, the soundtrack makes me cry. Having real feelings does not make you weak, it proves that you existed.
that Cabin in the woods location is real. It was filmed over in the June Lake area. That is very near Mammoth Lake in California. I go Camping for a week every year for the 4rth of July for nearly 40 years a couple of Canyons North at a place called Leavitt Meadows , on Hwy 108 near Hwy 395. It's a private campgrounds but my brother in law has a key to the gate.
The same composer who worked with Daft Punk on the score for Tron: Legacy. The main theme of this score is by M83, primarily Anthony Gonzalez who collaborated with the more “indie electronic” aspect of the score. Joseph Trapanese helped compose additional music, arrange, orchestrate, and conduct the score. Joseph Trapanese deserves to get more attention!
Oddly enough, both Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough were in "The Death of Stalin." Kurylenko played the pianist and Riseborough played Stalin's daughter. In this movie, Kurylenko plays Julia and Riseborough plays Victoria.
Another movie with Tom Cruise in a scifi genre..I'm digging it!

Another great choice. One of those movies I saw once, enjoyed and knew I wanted to go back and figure out more of the world. I'm glad to revisit this through your reaction. Bless!
Bless my friend!
Fun fact: The title Oblivion is a double meaning. The obvious, Oblivion, being complete destruction. And second, Oblivion as in oblivious. Like the characters in the movie.
I saw this movie with my girlfriend two months before she passed away. This movie brings bittersweet memories
5:23 - "I'm getting crazy video game vibes from this." After I first watched this movie around the time it came out, I remember thinking to myself, "Seems like the story would have been more appropriate for a video game than a movie." It was a decent movie, but would have been amazing if it were a video game.
Great point!
I'm taking Christopher Lee with me. If any actor got the skills to survive on an alien world, it's him.
I mean the man hunted Nazis. He is most definitely the type of person you'd want on your side if your exploring a potentially hostile alien world.
Christopher Lee would be cool, but I think Brian Blessed would more fun
@@stuartspencer2161 🤣🤣 that would be fantastic. I can just imagine him standing at the door of the ship as its slowly descending to the alien world and then jumping out and screaming "DIVE!!". Also, he's an actual explorer who has gone on expeditions to Antarctica and the jungles of Burma in search of a rare orangutan so yeah would definitely be helpful.
The soundtrack is everything to me❤❤❤❤
Super good!
Oh my gosh I love this movie and was really not expecting a reaction to this
Watching James VS Cinema is a physical representation of me losing the battle vs procrastination :D
😂😂😂 my fault in advance
James, you get to see a little bit more of Olga in Hitman (2007).
Freeman's quote at the end comes from a poem:
“Then out spake brave Horatius,
The Captain of the Gate:
To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his gods”
― Thomas Babington Macaulay, Lays of Ancient Rome
With a little work this could make a great video game premise. ESPECIALLY because, IMO, not enough games have a built in narrative reason WHY you get multiple lives. For that reason I actually think Edge of Tommorow would make an awesoe video game.
Andrea Riseborough (Victoria) was also in Death of Stalin (Svetlana), and she was in Birdman as well (Laura). She's such a chameleon! ✨💛✨
The Director had made this from a graphic book, that he wrote.
19:20 "Me fighting my procrastination!" - Dude, saaaame! That makes me feel a bit more encouraged to kick it in the ass more.
Kosinski’s visual style works so well with sci-fi, and while I’m sure Top Gun will look great, it’s a shame he couldn’t get ‘The Black Hole’ or ‘Tron 3’ off the ground.
The drone sound was my text notification for years!
Thank you for reacting to this underrated gem of a movie.
Next TC movie: Jack Reacher (the first one)! With Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo and Werner Herzog
Glad you enjoyed it :D Its one of my personal favs so.
Fantastic film. One of my favorite sci-fi entries of the last few decades
New to your channel. Good stuff. Loved your reaction when Olga said "im your wife". I also agree that the sound efx for the robot thing is awesome.
The Theme Song by M83 and my fellow Norwegian Susanne Sundfør is pure epic perfection!
The tech that made the mandalorian actually came from this movie. The precursor to the “Volume” was made for this film.
Not sure if you noticed, but the brunette girl was Stalin's daughter in Death of Stalin. She was also just in a great horror movie called Possessor
Dude playing like he watching this for Tom Cruise. Ever since Death of Stalin he's been thinking about Olga Kurylenko!
the drones were amazing. even knowing they're not real the sounds they make with those quick jerky movement.
this movie’s soundtrack is insane
Jack's house in the sky was a full size set, not CGI. They'd gone to a Hawaiian Volcano and filmed HD sky for ages, morning noon and night.
This was then projected on set so the house was lit naturally when filming. CGI replaced by real world effects.
The thing I really loved about this movie was the coherence and consistency of the TET design aesthetic. Look at any "army" or major organisation in history, their design/iconography is consistent.
see why the lighting is that good , in the make of the movie. it is true light , short of. i loved it
I like this one a bit more than edge of tomorrow & yeah CGI on point.
Agreed!!
I thought they went a little heavy-handed with the "Are you an effective team?" thing and it was kind of a dead giveaway that they were aliens.
It's code words to determine if the team is deteriorating (from getting memories back) and needs to be pulled out - i.e. exterminated - and replaced by new clones. It makes sense that's in there, and a hint that something is off.
A friend of mine worked on a Tom Cruise movie and had a little accident on that bike. Its a real fully electric dirt bike.
I loved this movie since it came out it’s such an unexpected twist I’ve seen in a movie before
I know you were probably kidding but I would really love a James Vs Games haha.
Stay tuned then ;)
All will be explained in the 'Making of' videos.
Kosinski is really talented, can't wait to see how the new Top Gun turns out
I remember thinking back then this is what the new Star Wars should be like. The aesthetics.
Oddly enough, both Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough were in "The Death of Stalin." Kurylenko played the pianist and Riseborough played Stalin's daughter. In this movie, Kurylenko plays Julia and Riseborough plays Victoria.
Crazy right??
