I disagree. I think that John Crowley actually knew alot about the Tarot and many esoteric mysteries. I have read this novel many, many times, and there are countless references to many esoteric studies. Aunt Cloud is my fav character, too. :)
I believe it is wrong to presume Crowley "didn't know anything about the Tarot when he was writing the book" if you fully grasp the depth of research done to write the Tale. This would have to be told to you directly by the author to make such a claim.
