      Yeah, I thought it might’ve been a risky double-entendre at first too, but then figured it had to be unintentional because it would be far too silly to deliberately bite the hand that feeds, etc.
      Happily it’s a LiFePo4, not an angry Lithium ion jobbie.

    It was great to see a review of a LiFePO4 battery. I've been following battery evolution for a while and had some hope that the next generation would be Graphene batteries. It looks like it will be the LiFePO4 instead. I use a Li ion battery on my bike and have been trying to find a LiFePO4 replacement without any luck. Maybe it's right around the corner. Any thoughts on switching your house batteries over to LiFe? I switched my RV batteries over about this time last year and am very pleased with the results. Being able to drain the full battery charge and the almost constant voltage make a huge difference. At that time it was difficult to get batteries with low temp protection but I was able to mount the batteries inside the RV which mitigates most of the risks from low temp.

      you can charge a lifepo4 battery safely with a conventional lead-acid charger, but it won't be able to charge it to full capacity. that's not necessarily a bad thing, as undercharging it will actually make it last longer although 6000 cycles is already 10+ years for most people...

      It's not at all a bargain, but it isn't bad. The LiTime low temp 100AH is 20% less expensive, at the expense of less continuous discharge. That said, nobody is discharging their single 100aH battery at 150+ continuous for a trolling application (or anything, really).

  • @TrapShooter68
    @TrapShooter68 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    LiFePo4 batteries are not immune from fire but are much less likely than Lion batteries. But I'd be concerned that with the battery holding 12v until shortly being depleted that there would be little warning that you were about to be stranded. Keep your oars handy!

    • @TravelsWithGeordie

    I see from the manufacture's link you provided, that this is an "LFP" lithium battery - as opposed to "NMC" chemistry. That's important. LFP or "lithium iron phosphate", produces slightly lower energy per pound (kg) than NMC (nickel, manganese, cobalt), which makes it safer and less likely to behave badly (eg fire). LFP is generally cheaper than NMC, but lasts many more charge cycles. LFP is heavier, than NMC, but still much, much lighter than lead acid. We have an Ecoflow Delta Pro portable power station with integrated inverter and LFP chemistry. In 2-1/2 years, we've used it for half a dozen power outages, and it can power our entire home up to about 24 hours. That's 10 emergency circuits with: refrigerator, freezer, internet, gas furnace, microwave and several outlets and lights. It can run a microwave or hair dryer. It will not run heavy duty 240V loads such as dryer, electric range or A/C for very long, even if combined with multiple Delta Pros to provide a 240V service. So much better than dealing with a gas generator. The Ecoflow has performed flawlessly.

      they expand..
      Like camera batteries 🤬
      and in certain cases the plastic pierced the bubble and air gets in..
      A good BMS with Bluetooth is key.
      and fit a fuse to the maximum current you will draw and use cable thick enough to reduce voltage drop..
      Also you can't charge directly from a standard (not designed for Lithium) alternator or battery charger.
      Otherwise.. I'm in the UK and am saving up for a Lithium battery.. I've now got 3 X 100/20 Victron solar charge controllers which will do Lithium.. they have a 20A load output and can be synced via Bluetooth.
      Still need to buy a Lithium battery charger..
      I will still have a Lead battery bank (in case it gets really cold) but let the Lithium do the work.
