1) I am thankful because I have amazing friends. 2) In my country, the Dominican Republic, we have a similar holiday, it calls Noche Buena (The Good Nigth), we celebrate it on Christmas Eve, but is not a statutory holiday, we must work (but in many businesses you can work less ours this day), we spend this night with relatives. The main dishes are baked chicken (or turkey) and baked pork, "Christmas" rice, Russian salad (made mainly of potatoes), plantain cake (is salty), a lot of fruits from the season (apples, pears...), for the dessert we eat Danish biscuits and chocolate.

Hi, Jen! I’m always grateful to colleagues and business partners to give me many opportunities to improve myself. of course also family and friends of mine. As you know, In Japan, we don’t have the thanksgiving day to celebrate in exactly same way especially at the urban area. However I think New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are very similar to that to feel gratitude to everything around us, in my opinion. Happy thanksgiving day!

Jen Here in the U.S. 🇺🇸 we share similar things as Canada. - I’m thankful for my health and my family. We like turkey 🦃also and we like stuffing. I like mash potatoes with gravy and veggies and other favorite items. We eat all types of pies. My fave is pumpkin with whipped cream or ice cream. Sometimes apple or peach. Happy thanksgiving , Jen . as a chinese , i have the same feeling as you , at first , chinese people have the very similar festival as the west , we call it the mid- autumn festival . we celebrate it because of harvesting crops that can guarantee us to have things to eat for the next year. Second this harvest is not easy to do , so we should be thankful those who helped us . of course , I think i should thank our parents for our growing up, so chinese people have the similar thoughts that we should go home to stay with our family ,althought the traffic is very heavy.
Hi! Jen! Finally, I was able to write a comment!!!😭💡Second question... I mean "じゅうごや(おつきみ)" in Japan. At that time , we don't tell about grateful to family and anything...But we are grateful to crops. "Jugoya" is almost first week of August. It day is almost Full moon or big moon. And then we pray for a good harvest. We offer seasonal food, Japanese pampas grass, dumpings and stemed buns to the moon. And we pray to the moon. After that, It doesn't matter we eat that seasonal foods , dumpings and steamed buns. By the way In Japan, the shadow on the moon surface looks like 2 rabbits are making mochi!🐇🌕

I only remember making and eating mochi at New Years. 😋 It's interesting about the moon. In Canada when there is a full moon, we say that the shadows on the moon look like a man's face, and we even have this idea of The Man in the Moon. 🌝
I'm a brit and we don't celebrate thanksgiving at all here in Europe but we know of it and oddly enough have black Friday but that's following the American one and not the Canadian one. I would like to attend a thanksgiving, just to experience it, maybe one day, if we're ever allowed to travel again lol. Oh and BTW, I noticed you said yams when showing sweet potatoes, is this common? I have eaten yams and they're nothing like a sweet potato, it's basically a ginormous potato that looks like a tree trunk, it is not a potato but similar, cassava tastes a bit like a potato too but obviously they're all different, I was just curious.

After reading what you wrote though, I looked it up because I thought that maybe I've just been mistaken my whole life in thinking so. According to several websites, sweet potatoes are constantly erroneously labelled as yams in Canada 🇨🇦 😆.

Wow wow wow wow. How wonderful, stunning and spectacular is the story of Canadian Thanksgiving where Sir. Martin frobisher has landed into Canada particularly in Nunavut for the first time ever. I think it was exquisantly beautiful that jeurney they sailed in the ocean, though all risks they definitely faced. Wow in 1578 AD everything was still quite quiet and how beautiful is the feeling anybody can have when land in an area for the first time ever. Really how lucky were they. Anyway with regards to our similar Thanksgiving in egypt were only back in the days in the past in the first century AD where the ancient egyptians had to celebrate two times a year once for agriculture, weather and fruits, and once for the river flooding. We still celebrate these two feasts and give thanks to God in the church while praising to Lord 🙏 for all of those givings. And personally I'm thankful/grateful and feel thankfulness/gratitude towards god for everything I have in my life specially for still having a job during this circumstances we have nowadays. I very often have been thinking about what is something that I am so thankful for: I am very thankful for having been living in Canada for some time. I was gifted with more experience that gave me the chance thereafter, to find the doors open by getting better opportunities to find what I considered good jobs for me.😊 In Spain we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving as such. But it is an important holiday here also, October the 12. Is called “Día de la Hispanidad” (Hispanicity Day) or also “Día de la Raza” (Day of the Race). In some South American countries, I think they also observe it as “Columbus Day” This is the day that Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas on October 12, 1492.🚢 Have a good day.

Thanks for your inquiry, Mnera🙂 First of all, I would advise people not to worry about being perfect while speaking English. The point of speaking is communication and as long as the listener can understand what you want to say, then you are successful, even if you've made slight errors in grammar or pronunciation. When speaking, if you forget a word that you want to use, try describing the word the best you can and often times the listener will be able to guess exactly what you're trying to say. Also, take your time. Speaking isn't a race and if what you want to say takes a few more secs or mins for you to articulate, the listener will usually be patient and try to understand. 🤗 Improving speaking is definitely a tough point for many people learning another language and it's perfectly natural to be better at listening than at speaking. In Brazil Thanksgiving has been created since 1949 by a law from Eurico Gaspar Dutra in government on time, and 1965 decret regulated to be occur in the same US day, November fourth Thursday. May I ask if you can help me understanding the meaning of “like” I am hearing a lot in daily conversations of a lot of people in Canada. I am hearing this word in almost every sentences people talking here.
Happy belated Thanksgiving 🦃. That is an excellent question! Like has three main meanings: One is to enjoy and prefer something (ex: I like Canada). Another is to say that something is similar to something else (ex: This turkey tastes like chicken). Like is also used to give examples of something (ex: I ate many traditional Thanksgiving foods like turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and squash). A fourth way that some people use 'like' is to replace the word 'said' (ex: I had Thanksgiving dinner with my brother and he was like 'I can't eat turkey anymore because I'm vegan'. So I was like, 'Well then you can't eat most of the other foods either because I made them with butter'.)😄 In addition to these four meanings, many young people use 'like' as a filler word. This means that while some young people are talking and trying to think about what to say next, rather than saying "Ummm" or "Hmm" they say, "Like" (ex: I like went to the like store and I like bought a turkey. I was like kinda surprised because like it was like really heavy.) I really dislike it when people use the word like in this way because I find it annoying 😅. Anyways, I hope that helps 🤗.

I am very thankful for having been living in Canada for some time. I was gifted with more experience that gave me the chance thereafter, to find the doors open by getting better opportunities to find what I considered good jobs for me.😊
In Spain we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving as such. But it is an important holiday here also, October the 12. Is called “Día de la Hispanidad” (Hispanicity Day) or also “Día de la Raza” (Day of the Race). In some South American countries, I think they also observe it as “Columbus Day” This is the day that Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas on October 12, 1492.🚢

Day of the Race or Hispanidad, is always celebrated on October 12 in the whole country. Normally a traditional military parade takes place, The National Holiday Day which includes units of the different armies (Air, Navy, Earth) and security forces, as the Civil Guard), but not this year due to the pandemic. 😣

First of all, I would advise people not to worry about being perfect while speaking English. The point of speaking is communication and as long as the listener can understand what you want to say, then you are successful, even if you've made slight errors in grammar or pronunciation. When speaking, if you forget a word that you want to use, try describing the word the best you can and often times the listener will be able to guess exactly what you're trying to say. Also, take your time. Speaking isn't a race and if what you want to say takes a few more secs or mins for you to articulate, the listener will usually be patient and try to understand. 🤗
Improving speaking is definitely a tough point for many people learning another language and it's perfectly natural to be better at listening than at speaking. Keep practicing English speaking and over time you will begin to see improvements! 😉

May I ask if you can help me understanding the meaning of “like” I am hearing a lot in daily conversations of a lot of people in Canada. I am hearing this word in almost every sentences people talking here.
Happy belated Thanksgiving 🦃. That is an excellent question! Like has three main meanings:
One is to enjoy and prefer something (ex: I like Canada).
Another is to say that something is similar to something else (ex: This turkey tastes like chicken).
Like is also used to give examples of something (ex: I ate many traditional Thanksgiving foods like turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and squash).
A fourth way that some people use 'like' is to replace the word 'said' (ex: I had Thanksgiving dinner with my brother and he was like 'I can't eat turkey anymore because I'm vegan'. So I was like, 'Well then you can't eat most of the other foods either because I made them with butter'.)😄
In addition to these four meanings, many young people use 'like' as a filler word. This means that while some young people are talking and trying to think about what to say next, rather than saying "Ummm" or "Hmm" they say, "Like" (ex: I like went to the like store and I like bought a turkey. I was like kinda surprised because like it was like really heavy.) I really dislike it when people use the word like in this way because I find it annoying 😅.

2) We have Ramadan in Iran, it is not exact same as Thanksgiving and it is not an Iranian celebration it is from Islamic culture, we have some special food for Ramadan, one of them is Haleem with Turkey meat.

2. There is no thanksgiving culture in my country Bangladesh although a celebration was observed in rural area for new Crops ( paddy) which is in November Called "Nobanno uthsbo" that's mean new crops celebration in English.
Now a day people dont wish to celebrate this.
