    Great video, as always! I managed to capture the supernova on my 20 year old 4" tal-1 on a vixen GP and a SVBony 305 camera. M101 is a the faintest messier object I've captured, so far.

    Thanks Dave! Is it possible to get a decent photo under bortle 8 sky?

    • @Eyesonthesky
      @Eyesonthesky  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have not tried it, so I cannot speak from experience. But I know some people have used narrowband filters coupled with a lot of very short exposures that are then stacked to produce acceptable results

      I think so too. But apparently it is quite the debate to others who pronounce it like the peanut butter.

    Hey, i’m looking to get a telescope but I don’t know which one to get. What’s a good telescope that can see M31?

    Great work, thank you. I imaged this on 8th May.
    No nova visible in my image. Can I still image it from 53 degrees north in June?

  • @mikehardy8247
    @mikehardy8247 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm imaging it as I write this. In bortle 8-9 I can see it in one 2 minute sub, with a 360mm Refractor, I think? Your making me dought. But from seeing the subs, your explanation is what I'm seeing?

    • @Eyesonthesky
      @Eyesonthesky  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not quite understand your question. Can you rephrase it?

    • @mikehardy8247
      @mikehardy8247 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Eyesonthesky I guess what I'm trying to get across, is that I think I see the super nova in just one 2 minute sub. I'm shooting in high light pollution, and a nearly full moon. Once I stack etc. I'll know better. Just that this video seems to make me think it's unlikely to see it in my circumstances, hmmm.

    • @Eyesonthesky
      @Eyesonthesky  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikehardy8247 ah, I understand. Thank you for clarifying. Light pollution is the villain, for sure.

  • @joshuafreedman7703
    @joshuafreedman7703 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, would it be opticaly visible through a 90mm f/10?

    • @Eyesonthesky
      @Eyesonthesky  ปีที่แล้ว

      The limiting magnitude of a 90mm refractor is about 13.3. So under sufficiently dark skies and fully dark adapted vision, until the supernova dims to 12.5 or 13.0, yes

    • @nonegone7170
      @nonegone7170 ปีที่แล้ว

      i tried it visually in bortle 7 with a 150mm, can't seem to find it, definitely need a darker zone for visual observation.

  • @MountainFisher
    @MountainFisher ปีที่แล้ว

    I cannot see much of it from Bortle 4 sky with an f5 6" reflector with a Strehl of .98 and 1/12th wave. Had to drive out to Bortle 2 to see it and then the Moon is lighting up the sky as well. M101 is best seen on Moonless nights because it is so dim. Then again the Andromeda Galaxy, M31 is so dim you can only see the center, plus since it is 6 moons wide you need a wide view scope to get it all anyway.

    • @Eyesonthesky
      @Eyesonthesky  ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, I was trying to help people be able to find the supernova which should be visible at 11.5 magnitude in a Bortle 4 sky, even if the galaxy is faint or invisible.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Eyesonthesky The nova is only 11.5 magnitude? I know my 150mm scope has a hard time with the Moon waxing brighter each night, superior optics notwithstanding. Now imaging it is fairly easy if you have a decent tracking mount, but I didn't put the motor on my CG-4, maybe I will tonight, problem is that at a certain angle the doggone scope hits it which is why I don't leave it on. Either that or I'll go get the CS-5 I gave my son and use it.

    • @Eyesonthesky
      @Eyesonthesky  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MountainFisher for 21 million light years away, 11.5 magnitude is quite "bright" relatively speaking. A 60mm telescope technically can allow viewing down to magnitude 12.5, though that's under ideal conditions. Most supernovas astronomers image are much, much fainter.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Eyesonthesky I typically view M51 simply because it is brighter than 101. Sunday night the viewing conditions were near perfect and we went to our Bortle two spot near White Sands Missile Range and I was able to crank up my magnification to 250x with my 102 triplet on the Moon with barely any shimmer, same with Mars.
      C80 globular cluster was outstanding in my 6" as was the C77 Centaurus A Galaxy. Since Centaurus is low to the horizon usually those targets are not very clear, but they sure were May 28. Antares was awesome with its partner star and of course M4 GC next to it. We were all over the place until around 3 AM. Not often you get perfect seeing conditions.
