      The grid is for the rule of third. Pictures get much more interesting if the main object is placed where the grid lines cross.

      The camera always takes a 4:3 sized picture.
      16:9 just zooms in a bit and square crops the top and bottom.

    On 16:9 format, the photos have extra imaging when you crop them. :) The "View outside the frame" option is more of a helper to see what is in the proximity of your frame, but doesn't have anything to do with cropping.

    Great video. Very Helpful. Clean production. No wasted motion and I learned a lot. Thank you so much.
    Probably mentioned already - the grid isn't for centering, rather creating more aesthetic composition using rule of thirds. Place the main subject at one of the four intersections or "crash" points instead of dead center.
    Also, I think Apple's timelapse is intelligent so that whether you shoot clouds for 30 minutes or for a whole day, the final video remains short 10-30 seconds. I need to see if that is still true.

    Great video thanks, it’s helped me a lot as a new 12 Pro owner having jumped from iPhone 7. I thought the reason for the extra visible frame was just to show you what would be in the scene if you were to switch from 4:3 to 16:9 for example.

      Thanks, glad the video was helpful for you! The 4:3 to 16:9 makes sense actually. It's just odd because I remember an Apple event and even reading about it having more of a use. I even find the odd post online confirming my thoughts but just can't replicate it.

    Just a thought on the extra “real estate” shown while taking the picture but not in the final photo. I am under the impression that showing you the “extra” is so you can see what you are missing in the photo or what you could add if you move a little to the right, left, up or down.

      Have just got my iPhone 12 Pro Max and looking to make the best use of the camera. Thanks for this great video.
      I saw somewhere else that the View Outside Frame feature is to show you what you're missing so that you can reframe the shot.
      Also, I found that the default aspect ratio is 3:4 when held in portrait mode, and 16:9 when in landscape mode.

    • @tunnelboy777
      @tunnelboy777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was my thought as well. I'm not a professional videographer, but I've seen monitors where they have the full image of what the camera is seeing, and then masking tape of where the actual scene will record. It was my take that this gives you an idea of where to "lead" the camera so you're looking purely at the preview and not taking your eyes off the monitor to watch the live action. Just a guess.

    Decent video! thanks for making it. The "view outside the frame" just shows you what the ultra wide or wide would have captured if you used those options instead of the 2x+ zoom. About the "outside of frame" setting, I'm taking a wild guess here, but try setting your photo size to 1:1 (square) and see if on 1x zoom it catches image outside of it, as far as I know it should work on the wide camera as if it is simultaneously capturing image with the ultra wide camera. This was so helpful, thank you! I believe view outside the frame means exactly what it says. When enabled you can see (view) additional portions of the photo above and below the frame in the camera app. When it is off, it is simply blacked out. There is no way to bring the portion outside the frame back into the photograph when editing even if this option is on.

    • @DHTV
      @DHTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah seems like that's the case, however someone in the comments did figure out if your shoot in the square mode (1:1) you can pick up some of the extra shot in the crop editing feature. But, it seems like it just grabs up to 4;3 which still isn't everything. I don't know why I remember seeing a demo on being able to use that extra area in edit. Thanks for the comment.

    • @robiny1823
      @robiny1823 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very helpful. I think that the "view outside the frame" feature is just there to make you aware of what you are including or excluding. It's there for photographers who make very calculated decisions about what's inside the frame of the image. Although I understand it's purpose, I find it too distracting when shooting with a phone. It makes more sense for shooting using a tripod.

    The camera always takes a 4:3 sized picture.
    16:9 just zooms in a bit and square crops the top and bottom.
    (Just learned from another video)
    Great video BTW. Very helpful.

      @@DHTV I'm not sure if you got it but this explains your problem with not being able to edit the extra real estate on the different size shapes that you asked us to let you know about.
      The one you couldn't do anything with was a 4:3 print so that is all you get. You can see extra real estate on 16:9 and square photos.

    Sir. What it says is “View” outside the frame. Not shoot outside the frame. Being an old SLR guy it is very confusing to me as to what was in the frame or not. Since your video I know to turn that off. I suppose it might allow you to pick up action outside the frame when shooting. Something to get used to maybe. Thanks for the help!,

    Thanks for this video explaining the iPhone 12 camera features. I previously had a 7+ and have just upgraded to the 12 Pro. I still learning photography with a Nikon D5600 DSLR as well as learning how to use the 12 Pro. Having Grid mode turned on is ideal for using "The Rule of Thirds" when taking photos and videos. Basically you use line up a focal point with two intersecting lines (one vertical and one horizontal). For example: If you were taking a portrait photo, line up the top two intersecting lines with your subjects eye that is closest to the camera. For a landscape shot, align a tree with either the left or right side of the image instead of centered. Of course with every rule of photography, the rules can also be broken.

    • @DHTV
      @DHTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting a few people mentioned the rule of thirds but thanks for explaining! I'm going to try to remember this for my iPhone 12 mini camera tutorial.

    Hi Dan,
    This was very helpful. Could you advise on the best way to take sharp action/sports photos? Using burst and Live photos modes results in blurry photos. I’m trying to figure out how to take volleyball photos where the player and the ball are in focus.

    • @DHTV
      @DHTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s tough but it is best to use burst mode. Aside from that using 4K video or even slow motion video and then when replaying the video, screenshot various points where it’s at its clearest. Other then that it’s unfortunately the limitations of the iPhone.

    The grid is known as the rule of ⅓ ads. It presents likes which make an image usually more dynamic by being placed on the third lines, or near about. You'll often find photos are more pleasing when using the rule of thirds. It also helps keep the horizon straight on photos of landscape. Good video, in teaching about the uses of the different changes available with the camera; many of which I did not know. Thank you.
