Great show Justin. Now you have moved to Omnipod 5 & Libre 2+ how do you get reading on your Apple watch as the Libre app is effectively redundant (or so they told me on the training). Ps I am using omnipod controller and not iPhone app as not available in UK.

I started the pod a month ago from mdi, it's great not having extra things in my pockets all the time. Just my phone and a snack stashed somewhere nearby. I went hiking on vacation with minimal issues. The system does have some downsides, but I am finding ways to make it work for me. Lots of others willing to share their tips and info on youtube and reddit helps me feel included in a community.

I've been using the Omnipod for 10 years. I started using the Dash just after it came out (I can't remember when that was). Unfortunately in Canada we do not have access to the OMnipod 5. I have found absolutely NO downsides to using the pod as opposed to MDIs. In fact when I started the pod in 2014, it changed my life significantly even without a CGM. I started using a CGM 3 years ago. Last Friday, I started AAPSclosed looping with my pod and the G7. Everything about the omnipod for me is a Plus. I did not want to use tubed pumps and I put off using a pump until I found out about the Omnipod. I only wish I had found out about it years previously.

Hello Justin. Thanks for the video. Your channel is great. I'm use Omnipod 5 on manual mode and can typically get 75 to 95% in range. For heavy cardio exercise (about 1 hour in duration) I typically make sure that my IOB is less than 4 units (that's me), that my BG is above 130, and I use a preset basal rate of 0% for an hour. I turn on the 0% basal about 20 or 30 minutes before I start exercising. About half way through my exercise it turns back on. I'll typically end up at about 90 ml/dL and creep up to maybe 120 after an hour or so. It goes without saying that this is me and my body. I just thought I'd chime in with my settings for comparison. For me a 50% reduction of basal rate wouldn't cut it. I'd drop down below 70 in about 25 minutes (depending on where I started).

With Tandem there is an exercise mode and you can create multiple settings profiles. If you use your normal profile and turn on exercise mode but you still end up going low, you can create a new profile just for exercise. You can decrease basal rates and/or increase your correction factor and still have Control IQ running.

    Hi Justin, from Australia.
I’m a diabetes NP and CDE. O5 has recently been approved here. Can you also use the PDM or is it app only ?
I wonder if you can change the calculation settings to allow a calculation with carbs when your BG is low? In ODash there is are options in settings that force the system to calculate only if the BG is above a specified target and this can be turned off.
Re: exercise…The Tandem pump has activity modes which allows the user to life the BG target for exercise and sleep. If the exercise activity is in use the pump system still delivers auto corrections and basal modulation, but aims for a higher target range. In sleep mode the pump gives no auto corrections but basal modulation still works. Medtronic has a similar system with its temp basal target.

My settings are probably off somewhere but I am not techy enough to know what to adjust. Target is set to 110 the lowest it goes but it seems pretty non aggressive about tyring to get to 110. I have been on the omnipod 5 since it was released. You really need to evaluate it for a longer time period, ideally half a year. At the very least you need to get thru the first 4 pods before it even starts to "learn" your trends.
The single greatest attribute to me, is the reduced mental burden. It does a much better job (with evidence based tweaks) at managing my basal rates than anything I've had before. Importantly, this includes reacting to my bolusing, good or bad. If I misjudge my carb count, it will reduce or increase my basal accordingly.
For anyone struggling, get thru the learning phase before you come to any conclusions.

I know things are changing me with the app one of the things I wish omnipod would consider is being able to call 911 on the pdms, and the other thing is I wish there was an option to “take insulin off” like when a pod leaks it will save 1.5 units on board then I change the pod and wanna give the bolus again so I can eat, and later there won’t be 2.5 units but only 1.5 so it will have what is working in you correctly. (No clue if this makes sense to others but for me it would be really helpful!)

Maybe you could have Meg on. I can't remember her TH-cam name but I think she's been on your channel. She ran a marathon on omnipod 5 but had figured out exactly what she needed to eat and stayed stable. She did a podcast on it. It would be a great interview. I would just say this about the eating, it is frustrating to have to eat, but on the other hand the reason we go low while exercising is that muscles take in glucose without insulin through the mitochondria I believe. Technically, if you could exercise the right amount throughout the day you would have to take very little insulin. Peter Attia, who has a podcast also, is a physician who works with high performance athletes now also focusing on exercise/ health for longevity, talks about it scientifically if you want the details. So the point is, during endurance workouts/sports, your muscles put out that sugar to keep you going, keep you from going low. If you don't replenish the sugar during the workout your muscles will be left with nothing. It seems like she has figured this out. Thanks for all your hard work and getting us educated in a fun way.
I'm getting ready to try the omnipod, my first pump so very interested in your experience. My only concern is having to change it so often and carry so much stuff with me when I travel.

The duel alarms is the one thing I hate (yes HATE) about the Omnipod 5/Dexcom system. Its become a nightmare. When the Dexcom gets to the end of a cycle and starts giving false low alarms that are then echoed by the pod it becomes a cycle that takes forever to get to stop. It won't let you enter the correct glucose number and then stop. It takes multiple entries and sometimes hours to actually correct.

"I dont want to have to eat before a work out to balance things out". the problem with this is you could exercise and the exercise alone will bring your bg down without insulin. and since our pancreas doesnt regulate sugars with automatic glucagon release, we literally must compensate with glucose during extended or intense exercise activity. until there is a dual glucagon/insulin pump that is automated, I cannot see a scenario where Im not eating something before and during a long run.

What helps me on very active days, more intense exercise days, I have a half a serving size of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. It's fairly quick for kicking in too, around 15 minutes. No spikes, and not like most Protein that takes 1-2 hours plus.
