The Bible says no man is good, but as we humans would judge a man, Charlie was a good man. RIP Charlie Daniels. God rest your soul.

Charlie was talking about hard dope, he was known to partake in a bit of the good green...

That's because dope originally referred to opium and its derivatives like heroin and this song was released at the height of the heroin epidemic.

He did when he was younger but not in his later years. He spoke about getting older and becoming a Christian and how it changed him. He changed the lyrics in several songs to omit it when he sang in concert. In Long Haired Country Boy he change the lyrics from I get stoned in the morning and get drunk in the afternoon to I get up in the morning and I'll lay down in the afternoon

Back when this song came out the term dope had come more to mean heroin, not so much weed. All you gotta do is listen to "Long Haired Redneck" to know he's cool with the green 🤘

I grew up with 7 sisters and 5 brothers. My dad was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars and as tough as they come. He raised us boys to be men. Respectful, kind and giving men. We all worked at a young age and always helped each other, our neighbors and our community. And we protected the vulnerable and indefensible. From the old lady at church that would fill her purse with cookies from coffee hour to the poor kid down the block from being bullied. We looked after our own and that taught us to stand up for ourselves even if you knew you were going to lose, you stood your ground. What he's saying basically is 3 foot. There's a three foot space around me you don't cross unless invited and if you do what you're planning to do, you'll draw back on a stump and will regret it. Yes, I might lose this one but you ain't getting out of this without feeling the harsh consequence I'll be delivering you and with any hope, you'll stop doing what you're doing. I once knew a kid that would tease and provoke dogs that were chained up. It only took one time when a dog broke the chain and caught him and he never did it again. Bring your lawless, undisciplined, uncaring, self centered, egotistical, prideful and badass self to my door and find out what1 that'll get ya, is what this song is about. Like, Try That In A Small Town or A Country Boy Will Survive. Most everyone in my small town was white but that didn't matter. The Black, Asian and Latino kids had just as many friends as we all did and race was never an issue. You were judge by the content of your character no one escaped being corrected when they had it coming. BTW, Loving your channel. My good find for today. LOL

This came out in 1989 (35 yrs ago) when things were staring to be brought to light that there is a degradation of the society that we all held dear... mainly due to political maneuvers by politicians wanting to remain in power rather than serve the people. Charlie always tells it like it is. RIP to a great guy (he passed in 2020). Great reaction and I'm glad you've "found your way".

About 10 yrs ago, we moved into a cabin up in the mountains of Southwest Colorado, about 15 mins West of Durango, CO. As the crow flies, Charlie Daniels had a house about a mile away. It was a nice, but simple place, on 3 acres in a very low key, off the beaten path location. STUNNING location. Jaw dropping, actually. There weren't many people who lived in the canyon, but we were told that he would go down to the very little church in Hesperus and play his fiddle on Sundays to the congregation. I am sad I never made it to church there to see for myself. The folks there are ranchers and simple and decent. Charlie would have fit in magnificently.

As for youthful transgressions, that's your journey (and mine) and without that you'd be a shadow of the BEAST MAN that you've grown into. God's plan is trippy. I knew Charlie. He was one of the most approachable, down to earth dudes...along with Johnny. Blessed to have been raised here a known them both personally and they both liked the green. Oh, on Johnny's property was Cash's cliffs were we hung out and cliff dived virtually every summer day. He LOVED coming over with a cigarette and hanging out watching us NUT teenagers drinking beer and doing back flips from 40 ft. I could go for days on stories of his true love and benevolence for all of us. Maybe one day I'll tell ya about when we were bailing hay for him and one guy lost his pay in the field on Friday. What Johnny did on Monday after finding out is the stuff of legends

Thought this was what Shinedown covered at first but their Simple Man is a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd and it's a totally different song.

You’d definitely be down for some of his original gospel songs like Business of Love, Lay It On the Line, Two out of Three, Somebody Was Praying For Me, Tribulation

At the time this song was released PCP aka Angel Dust, LSD, Cocaine and Heroin where rampant in some areas of the country. He was speaking to that. Thing that really hits home is that this song is still relevant today. Just like the song "Crazy Train" by Ozzie.

When he made this video it was before he got saved and started going to church. I was raised on this music and the older "outlaw" country. I could give you a list of singers to check out.

When this song came out in my day he was considered one of the best southern rock bands, along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, Pure Prairie League, The Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet , Marshall Tucker Band and others.
