    I went bright magenta/pink a few months ago and the color faded out to such a beautiful pastel rosegold-ish color. I feel like this is the best way to getting lasting pastels, basically staining your bleached hair with very bright pigmented colors. Problem is tho that you can't really properly predict how a certain color will fade out 🥴

    • @beautifly92
      @beautifly92 ปีที่แล้ว +129

      Amen! I do this! My fuchsia baby lights fade to rose gold and it looks amazing. Most people loved it more when faded rather than freshly dyed! 😂

      Hard to go wrong with a fading pink, either it looks great or it leaves you with a nice clean slate for the next colour

    • @cherrybeebee1062
      @cherrybeebee1062 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      A better way is mixing bright pink with conditioner before applying, it gives a pastel colour that actually sticks that you can keep reapplying if needed since the tube will last basically forever that way

    • @itskimik
      @itskimik ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cherrybeebee1062 that's also a solution if you're using conditioner! I prefer the staining method tho because i can basically treat it like my normal hair because the stain won't go away 😎

    • @cherrybeebee1062
      @cherrybeebee1062 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@itskimik i think you misread?? i mean just mix bright dye with conditioner so its going to dilute it lighter, that way you now have a pastel dye that holds on much longer than a normal already made pastel dye, you just apply it like normal dye and if you notice any fading (it normally lasted the exact colour for a month) you just go over it again since you should still have a entire tube of colour left and since its just semi perm and conditioner it does no damage, i had my hair light pink for ages until my roots grew too much and i couldn’t be bothered to bleach them. Staining is not a good idea if you dont want patchy results or risk having the hair turn out the wrong colour (if you have a strong enough yellow tone before you dye you can end with more of a orange hue when it fades not pink)

She should have led with "these are my opinions", but instead she tries to make it sound like law. Which just makes her look stupid. This is the same woman who uses Splat brand on her hair. Uh if you’re getting that much damage to your scalp you’re definitely doing something wrong or you have a sensitivity or allergy- STOP dyeing your hair until you figure it out!!!! Bleaching your hair shouldn’t hurt or damage your skin barrier at ALL. No burns, no sensitivity, no redness, no crustiness or oozing. The proper amount of discomfort is extremely minimal

    • @kikibirdball

      Are you bleaching clean hair? You shouldn't be damaging your scalp if you do it right...

    • @Rusk-zk2ch
      @Rusk-zk2ch ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The most discomfort you should be getting from bleaching your hair or even re-doing your roots with dye is a warm pins-and-needles itchy feeling and maybe some scalp tightness immediately after.
      It should absolutely NOT take months for you to recover from doing your roots. A few weeks at most is normal, and that’s usually to be safe.
      If you use a specific dye or bleach and have any known allergies I’d double check the ingredients to see if there’s any overlap. Aside from that, you usually want to bleach hair that’s dirty and dye hair that’s clean. Whatever products that are being used will have a maximum processing time on them. Permanent colors, demi-permanent colors, and bleach usually don’t exceed one hour as their maximum processing time. They should also instruct you whether or not you should be using a heat source while processing.
      If it’s taking you months to recover after your stylist does it for you, I’d find a new stylist because that is incredibly unusual and alarming.

    I actually thought "hot roots" would be on this list as well. Cause they are so hard to maintain and style properly...
    When there is regrowth you literally have 2 different coloured stripes at your roots and a block of yet a different colour on your mids and ends and it takes SO MUCH EFFORT to get your hair to a solid colour again, without going too dark.
    It usually only looks good for a couple days or weeks too, until your roots start showing and you need to bleach them, while avoiding the already bleached parts where the statement colour sits, to avoid looking crazy or messy

    In defense of green hair:
    I have bright green hair (and really short). I had a few different shades of green on my head a few separate times now and i loved it.
    I always loved it. I have no problem with stylability since i always wear black anyway and so my hair was always my pop of colour. So it really depends on your preexisting style. Sure your head won't be one consistent colour but with at home application few people achieve that. I had it on an undercut (bright green) a mohawk (dark green) and on buzzed short hair (both dark green and neon/lime green). Currently growing it out and once more green (colour is called spring green and pretty close to apple green) it really isn't a colour to fade into the background with. You will stand out. But i really like that it fades so nicely, especially the lighter greens. And since i keep my hair short it doesn't matter as much if i damage it by bleaching it light enough for the colour to shine since i can always chop it off.

    I had pastel hair all through 2014-2015 and it was pretty easy for me. Key note though is that I have dark blonde hair naturally so it wasnt too hard to bleach it. If you do get it lightened though, pastels are pretty easy to maintain!
    All you need to do is use a darker dye at first, at use demi-permanent dye every week in conditioner to leave in while you shower it lasts a long time and stays vibrant. I even slowly transitioned my hair from colour to colour by adding in a neighbouring colour into the conditioner.

    I have long dark brown hair and dyed everything below the shoulder bright blue. I love it! It does require refreshing frequently to avoid the washed out look, but the biggest surprise for me is that the area right at the top of the blue keeps fading to blonde! After it happened a second time, I started coloring that band apple green and it's GORGEOUS. I'm a freaking mermaid now!!

    I think when hairstylists say "have a salon dye you black, it will be easier" they usually mean that when you use professional stuff it's easy to predict what color it'll be when you decide to remove it and neutralize accordingly. Box dye doesn't have a whole pamphlet on color charts and bases, it doesn't tell like "this hairdye has a brown-violet base overall, and this 1.0 is more green than red" and so on. every professional brand creates it's colour with diferent pigments and if you use it in your work you know which ones they are, but the box dye doesn't have anything like that, just take the box and hope for the best

Because I have shorter hair overall (plus 2b/2c curls to hide my roots/natural cooler tone hair) I've avoided most of the pain you describe for the apple green color. I’ve had split dye for almost two years now and honestly it’s one of the best things I have ever done for myself! I just feel so much joy every time I look in the mirror!! I currently have half my natural very dark brown and the other half is rainbow!! Personally, for me, the pros outweigh the cons and if you are thinking of doing a split dye, go for it!!

    • @mikkofrog2733
      @mikkofrog2733 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think this is the best way to do split dye, half natural and half dyed, that's what I used to have for a while and it avoided a lot of the 'stylability' issues mentioned in the video, and ALL of the problems with unequal fading. I had half of a forrest green head, and it stayed fun the whole time through (it faded to pale and blueish through a month and a half, and basically then remained that colour FOREVER, until I cut it off basically) and I'd say the one issue was the asymmetric hair damage haha. Having half a natural head even helped with goofy looking regrowth, at a point it starts looking like a purposeful sort of dip dye, and you can sort of blend it in by moving where you separate your hair, truly was a colour worth getting!

    • @emilyk5003
      @emilyk5003 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the reasons not to do split dye don’t even make sense to me. She kept adding clips of where it supposedly looked bad but it didn’t?? The only valid points are that one might fade a lot quicker than the other (which is possible but not common) and that touch ups take longer because it’s fiddly to seperate. But honestly it’s worth the effort! Almost every look I’ve done since 2014 has been split in some way (either half/half or accent fringe) and I’ve never once thought it was a burden.
      Now your rainbow, that sounds like a burden lol. I’ve been so tempted but it sounds too hard to maintain!

    • @1bigemptyspace
      @1bigemptyspace ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emilyk5003 the rainbow has been a bit more difficult than just a solid colour because lighter colours like yellow fade a lot faster than say, blue or red. But I’m pretty good at keeping my colour in (only washing with cold water, washing my hair only once a week, limiting exposure to the sun and heat) and get it re-done every 3ish months. Of course, it does fade which is sad but I don’t mind the pastel-y colours it fades into and you can still tell it’s rainbow! I also have curly hair which is a lot of work in itself, so it’s been a bit of a trial and error, but it’s managed to work! The only downside to the rainbow vs the solid colour I can think of is that when I had a solid colour I used to do touch ups using colour masks and conditioners so that is was always very vibrant, but I’m too afraid to touch it now so I leave that for my hairdresser lol

    • @omglauraelizabeth
      @omglauraelizabeth ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love my split dye. I keep one side jet black and I change the other side every few months. I don't have any issues. It matches my clothing style too (mostly black, punk style). No issues there. The biggest issue I have is parting my hair perfectly, there's always black on my colored side or vice versa but honestly it doesn't look bad with my overall style.
      Long story short: I hate videos like these. It's an opinion. What's good for one person isn't ideal for another.

    The other thing about Ashe blonde hair is skin tone. I have strawberry blonde / auburn natural hair with grey green eyes and pink cool toned skin (very pale), so Ashe blonde flatters me more than darker hair. When you have warmer tones in your skin, darker facial features (dark eyes, dark eyebrows, lashes and more) the Ashe blonde would wash you out. Same goes for people who are cool toned but have darker features, it will not flatter you. BUT if you go Ashe blonde, you could have beige tones in it for warmer skin toned people OR have a darker root to contrast the hair and the skin ❤ loved this video, definitely been there and gone through bad hair colours 🫡🤣 have a lovely day whoever is reading this 🎉

      I've noticed the same with make up too. I live in Korea so most people have yellow undertones, making most makeup available at the store 90% warm toned. Looks terrible on me,I'm super pale and cool toned. Now with the ash tone craze, they've started pumping out ash toned eyeshadow. I guess they got too many complaints because it usually doesn't look good in warmer toned skin, they've added displays or labeling the different makeup for cool or warm tones. It saves me a lot of swatching, which they don't like you doing because of COVID, and so much time. Thank y'all for the ashey hair craze!!!!

    I ended up using a purple semi-permanent dye that was so dark that it came out looking black at first, luckily what I learned from that process was that isopropyl alcohol seems to remove stains that were the result of semi-permanent dye. The alcohol got it off of my skin, the walls, and the tub it was a life saver. That is also to say though that semi-permanent black dye will likely stain you hair and still be very difficult to remove. My naturally dirty blonde hair is still a denim blue and it has been months since I dyed it and I don't use color safe shampoo either.

    I've been on the same journey! I've had every colour and combined. A few of these I disagree with but it all comes down to preference. I wear a lot of black and grey, not much colour so the issues with half & half, and green hair wasn't an issue. In fact, when I had half blue half purple hair I found it was more fun to style in terms of hairstyles and none of my outfits were affected because I just wear black & grey! Even if I did wear colour, any colour within that spectrum (like blue, purple, pink) went well with it if it was small pops of colour.
    I've asked friends and family what their favourite hair colour I've done is and they ALL say between neon/apple green, and burgundy (not at the same time lmao). Green was so fun and different (at the time pastels were more of a trend), and I absolutely loved it. It didn't wash out as fast as reds and if my hair wasn't even in tone before dying it, the variations of green looked cool. Granted, my hair was quite long both times I've had bright green hair. Also if you add some dark green in it, it looks wonderfully dimensional.
    The WORST colours for me were (no particular order):
    1. Orange (like bright neon orange) - when it fades it goes an ugly straw-like peach colour. And it faded FAST.
    2. Black - like blue-black - for the same reasons in this video. It's a commitment and also I find blue-black box dye makes your hair look like a wig and not in a good way. It's not soft enough to look natural and it's too boring for it to be "excitingly unnatural". I loved this colour when I was an emo kid in my teens, and it looked good then with that style, but that's about it lol.
    3. Holographic - This was SO PRETTY but it's such a process. You have to get your hair very light, like ash blonde, which is already difficult and then you add very light layers of pastel blues, purples and pinks and do it in a way that doesn't look patchy, streaky, or too sectioned (a good balance). Looks great. Maintaining it is a nightmare because of the sections you dye it. Plus side is that because it fades so fast, it's easy to go to another colour afterwards.
    4. Yellow - like bright yellow. Unless you want to constantly be called Pikachu, don't do it. I think it would look really cool with darker skintones but as a pale person it looked terrible.

    Hi Stella love you and am so excited for the secret project , for me I kinda dye my hair a lot and for me I kinda don't care I had apple green twice but both time I did them with 2 colors (light green with dark green highlights actually faded fast) ( apple with purple highlights green I ended up going blue after it) , I had once split dye half yellow half pink (luckily they both faded nicely and fast), ash white (I sometimes do it when I go to the hair dresser just for an even base for other colors and keep it for 1 or 2 weeks then dye it pastel) pastels (my favorite works the best for me) black( I never did it yet, the darkest I did is dark brown) , I've done almost all colors and ngl u were my inspiration for all that time I've watched u since I was 9 years old and that was the first time I got my hair dyed

    I will say that I’m a natural blonde and I dye my hair black. Safe to say I’ve never missed blonde and love how much the black compliments my blue eyes and pale complexion. Personally, I think it’s one hundred percent worth the maintenance/mess. I’ve come back from black once before and my only complaint is ever thinking to leave black hair. I always felt bland and like I lacked excitement with blonde. I did try everything from platinum to dark blonde. It’s all a personal choice. Just make sure black will be worth it beforehand because it can be quite a shock.

Dyed it with a 'non permanent' box dye few times, came out pretty easy, went red after it, now pink. I've a really light skin and like black/darker much more than lighter colors. Also had really icy blonde end of 2020, did like that too tho hahaha. Did have split dyes, half-half like you had, too in the past. Feel like I've had all colors and many combinations too.

    I have also tried almost every color under the sun, funny enough the colors I was most happy and satisfied with and had the least problems with were pastell (blue/turquoise) and ice white. Had both for a really long time (3+ years) which is otherwise very unusual for me, and didn't find them hard to maintain at all. For the pastels I would just use conditioner mixed with a bit of (non permanent) dye for every or every other wash, and the color never faded. For ice white I'd use a homemade mix of very little purple/blue toned non permanent dye with my conditioner that functioned as a toner and nothing ever went brassy. My natural hair color is a shade 6/7 so redoing the roots was a bit annoying but that's it. I'm going back to ice white with some lilac strands tomorrow 😄

    I used to dye my hair black all through high school. I would buy manic panic (raven black) and the base on that is purple/blue so I would mix a manic panic blue in there too. 💙 Just to give it some dimension. My hair is a level 2 so it wasn't a huge change. Also, manic panic raven black washes out so quick. My hair also lifts fast to blonde (I've been blessed with super porous curls). I'd never do ash blonde (only in wigs). I think the color I'd NEVER do again is red. It fades so fast and depeding on the base of the color it can be a gross orange. 😝

      Red depends SO much on your undertones, though. Red, pink, orange all last forever in my hair, literally years. Blue and purple are completely gone in a month. In fact, I have such a strong tendency for dye to turn red that blue dye on me fades into purple instead of green like most people get. For years I bleached, dyed, cut, curled, and basically tortured my hair-most of the time it was FUN! It’s been fright white and jet black. It was maroon, every shade of red, oh what a lark! As it began to gray, I had highlights and lowlights added professionally. Then one day it happened. I used a hairdresser who just was lazy and careless. My hair was ruined. Fried. Dry Ramen noodles had better texture. I discovered that a guy who boarded a horse at my barn was a hairdresser, so I asked him if he would cut my hair and showed him a picture of a Pixie. That night he cut off all of the damage, revealing my natural hair color. It looked GREAT, and felt even better. Sorry for the essay, but hair should be fun! ❤️

    ive had neon green hair twice (so far lmao) and yeah its definitely a nuisance 💀. it looked cool after dyeing it, but after like 1-2 washes the color became a bit dull and just kinda weird, and trying to remove the color to go back to blonde was a nightmare. it wasnt that hard to style bc i just wore all black, but if you like colorful clothes its definitely going to be a headache
    i think the worst part is that i still would probably dye it like that again bc after all, i loved how it looked 💀 but if you can afford it, i would definitely recommend trying out a wig first

    Thank you for your absolute honesty! I tried almost all the colors on this list and for me green was the worst.. the only way I found to get rid of it, without dying my hair black or a boring brown, was to apply red on top .. i got purple hair

      I had a very different experience with green, I wanted to do the rainbow backwards but got stuck on green because I loved it so much. I've had my hair green for the last 2 years (from neon to apple basically everything) and just recently I went rainbow. while I agree that it is a bitch to remove, I belive it is because green knows it looks good and wants you to commit

    I don't have much experience with dying hair but I was under the impression that different hair types and different people have different experiences with the same dye.

    I have level 1-2 hair so it is essentially black. I have died my hair literally all of the colors of the rainbow even accidentally at times. However, in the past, I would use permanent black dye to go back to my "natural" hair color if I wanted to essentially start over, and recently I discovered demi-permanent black. I have tried semi-permanent black and that washes out super fast, but demi-permanent black has been a game changer for me! Permanent black of course I agree is the hardest to remove aside from green. Both of those are my favorite colors and I will go from green to black and back to green most years. The process is so hard, but I love the colors. And now demi-permanent black is my go to when I take my hair experimentation just a little too far :)

    Loved my hair dyed black I just ended trimming and eventually hey no more black it wasn't too pretty during that time but it is cool seeing how much my hair grows.

    A tip for split dye hair, it tends to look better if the colours are more neutral looking, strawberry pinks, browns, warm gray, blonde and black are really nice colours and can be easily paired without too much clash. Ones skin tone can also effect how hair colour compliments them. One thing is for sure no matter what skin tone you have softer colours look everyone. :)

      I wouldn't do it, the black hair color will be so hard to remove and black hair color washes out fair skin tone without makeup, also when your natural hair color starts to grow in at the roots it will like crazy with the black! I've lived and learned as a hair dresser I'd say just get a cheap black wig to see if you like the color before coloring your hair black 🙏

      You could do a strand of black, you’d see how your hair looks with the dye and how it fades

    I looooved when my hair was dyed black and would probably still be wearing it today, but I ended up developing severe allergies after having it a few years, and now my scalp can no longer tolerate most dyes. Such a shame.

    I’m so thankful for this video!!! As an attorney, I can’t get away with a lot of different hair colors, so I’ve become a collector of the wigs from Crazy Horse Paris! They may all be the same style, but the wig maker sees each customer in person to cut it to compliment their exact facial structure!!! 🥰💞
