Hi Glenn, LOS is all I ever knew until I started watching your FPV stuff. I have progressed to having a 3D printer, FPV goggles, Dart 250g and the Dart XLe since watching all of yours and yet I still don't believe there is anything I could actually teach you LOS 😆.... apart from one thing... don't take your eyes off it, you are not sat in it!!!! 😆 Welcome to my club mate👍👍🤣🤣🤣
Hi Mick I am sure you can teach me a lot I am well out of my comfort zone. I need an FPV fix to get over it 😀 Seriouly though I really enjoyed it and it reminded me of the feeling when I did my first FPV wing flight 3 years ago.
Great job Glenn. LOS isn't easy if you haven't got the experience with it. Like you said, gotta think like you are sitting in the plane. Orientation is the key. Robert said it right, get some stripes on it, always helps. Rudder on a high wing is a skill that I still haven't conquered after over two years of flying strictly LOS. It does get intuitive, muscle memory and all. I am more of a bank and yank guy so high wings aren't my cup of tea, or pint of beer as it were. There are a couple cheat mixes you could do to help with steering, most would say i shouldn't say this to you, so you get the skills in your thumbs and don't depend on a crutch. Aileron/rudder mix is my go to. Aileron input will activate 20-40% rudder to help swing the tail out to dig the nose into the corner, helps with tip stalls. Ideally you should be doing that with your thumbs anyway, but you can set it up to say just your mid rates. That way it helps with just general flying but isnt active when in low rates for take offs and landings, or when you want to aerobatic in high rates. I have even made a mix, which works amazing, where you do a rudder/aileron mix. this is where you steer the plane directly with rudder input only, (left stick) and this will activate OPPOSITE aileron to by say the same 20-40%, (model dependent of coarse), to hold the plane somewhat level in a turn. This will give the wing the best opportunity to maintain lift in a turn. Really awesome for slower flight. Other then that man you could ease up on the throttle some, maybe add a little more expo so it doesnt feel so twitchy in roll or pitch. You got this buddy keep up the good fight my friend. Cheers PS. I am just getting into FPV after LOS from the start over two years ago, so i will be in the same boat as you soon, just on the other end of the spectrum lol. FPV will freak me out some guaranteed lol. Chris
Cheers Chris they are really good tips. Some of the experienced pilots at the flying club today really helped me with my turns using the elevator and throttle to avoid losing altitude. I have 30% expo at the moment but its all so new I need to experiment but most importantly practice I guess. I will have a play around with mixing when I get a little more comfortable in the air.
Chris, I'm in the same boat mate, been flying LOS for some years now. Have now gone across to FPV. At 51 my kids laugh at me as I still feel nauseous, thank god for the rth mode as it give me chance to remove the goggles and recover a bit in LOS 🤣🤣, still yet to land in fpv.....
You're doing well Glenn. I'm sure at the club you'll get confident really quickly. Having experienced guys to learn from really helps. With the timer, I use a throttle percentage timer and start at 3 minutes. Fly it til the 30 seconds warning, then land and check the battery. Usually a bit more time can be added. I just find the throttle percent timer better than pure time, as if how you fly changes, the timer will compensate.
Hi Darren thanks for the advice I do have the timer percentage set and 5 mins is about right with a mix of throttle I am using at the moment. I have a switch to reset the timer but keep forgetting it so am going to try and figure a way to reset it when I disarm if possible.
Very good practice session! Just remember to slow down a bit, you are coming in way too fast :) Dont be afraid to lower the throttle and have a long landing leg. You will soon be an ACE LOS pilot !! And LOS is great fun, so keep on flying. Remember, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing! :) Cheers!!
Thanks for the encouragement I do need to really slow down on landing approach. I got a bit more practice today and I am feeling marginally more comfortable 😀
Keep at it. LOS flying is loads of fun, maybe not as cool as FPV, but it has its moments.. Once you master this plane, you need to expand your airforce with some Warbirds (Spitfire, of course) and some aerobatic 3D stuff.. :-)
My suggestion is an EPP profile foamy to train on. They are slow and bounce superbly. BTW. I love flying behind me. Flying club people tend to be rule obsessed. It's just a kids toy made of foam.
Good shout Rob I did lose a bit of orientation sometimes. I will put some stripes on the underside of one of the wings which should help while I am learning. 👍
@@bluefish3607 I was taught to land like a low level fly by and lower throttle when you feel comfortable do a few low level touch and goes to get use to it take care

I tell FPV folks this all the time. LEARN LOS flying before flying FPV fixedwing. Especially long range FPV! I see it often folks losing video feed and not knowing how to land because they never learned LOS piloting. Anyone can through some goggles on and fly a plane but it take experience to fly LOS without FPV. I get yelled at every time I bring this subject up in the FB groups but don't care.
FPV is my passion but this skill will be very useful for some of the places I plan to fly in future besides that VTX failure really made me realise it could save me from a crash in future.
Having LOS flying skills is absolutely a good thing. Saved me from some embarrassing equipment failures more than once.
I agree Caroline I need this skill for sure and it really gets the adrenaline going having a new challenge.
I started the other way around. Did my first LOS flight (crash) as a kid over 30 years ago. Good luck 👍

Great video my friend. This seems to be a very nice flyer too. LOS is so much fun when you actuially see your own plane flying :D
I am looking forward to flying my wings LOS when I get better. Will be useful for landing on the tiny landing strips you choose for us 😀

I really enjoyed it as a trainer plane to learn LOS, I gave it to a friend and have now moved on to a Maxthrust Riot V2 and an FMS Fuyura 64mm EDF Jet

Even though I mainly fpv I still love line of sight. It’s a totally different feeling it’s hard to explain. Maybe I should try control line next lol
I agree its a totally different feeling, panic and fear mainly 😀

I am having fun with this and if I crash it (which I will) its no great shakes. I have my eye of the FMS 1700mm Supercub :-)
the ESKY aka Aeroscout is also a great trainer and is what i use to practice my LOS
It needs color couldnt see the plane in half of the video great job just the same
