- The Ventures are an American instrumental rock band formed in 1958 in Tacoma, Washington. Founded by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, the group in its various incarnations has had an enduring impact on the development of music worldwide. With over 100 million records sold, the group is the best-selling instrumental band of all time. In 2008, the Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Their instrumental virtuosity, experimentation with guitar effects, and unique sound laid the groundwork for innumerable groups, earning them the moniker "The Band that Launched a Thousand Bands". While their popularity in the United States waned in the 1970s, the group remains revered in Japan, where they tour regularly to this day.

Ventures are so awesome, got my first two albums in 1963 when I was 7 yrs. old, it taught how to play fast pace drums

My great-grandmother had a bunch of Ventures albums on vinyl. She passed away a bit over 3 years ago at the age of 92, and my grandparents gave me her record collection I could pick and choose from. In it were a bunch of Ventures albums, Beach Boys albums, an Elvis Record, CCR's Willy and the Poor Boys, and a speech by JFK. She used to be a schoolteacher and would play piano on weekends and over the summers to make ends meet, a rare feat to get into a comfortable living situation considering she was half-Japanese and half-Native American and dealing with the racial tensions of those times. She was a remarkably intelligent, even when she became really old and frail. The last time I saw her was when my grandparents and little sister to her nursing home, and she played us kind of a medley between classical songs, swing tunes, and old rock jams for half an hour. I loved and miss that woman.

mike9999999999999ful, if my calculator is correct, your great grandmother was born around 1922 which would put her in her 40s during this era - that's almost as intriguing as being half-Japanese and half-Native American - I'd love to hear that story.

Great history of surfing and The Ventures, both still performing! I saw them in Berkeley a couple years ago and they were fabulous. Then they went over and did shows all down the Best Coast!
I remember these songs as they came out in the sixties. They still sound good to me even after all these years.
Nothing but the hottest in surf classics and the VETURES are the total bomb always.

Chills when I hear this. It so reminds me of cruising up and down PCH checking different spots with the boyz looking for the best waves. The 60's and 70's were so carefree and fricken fun.

The Ventures are still by far is the BEST Instrumental band ever !!!! Too bad the bassist or bass guitarist Don Wilson is the only surviving member of this great band, and all other members are now deceased starting with the drummer Mel Taylor in 1995, lead guitarist Robert (Bob) Bogle in 2009, and rhythm guitarist and occasional actor Nokie Edwards ten years later in 2019. The Ventures founder Don Wilson retired back n 2019 after the death of rhythm guitarist Nokie Edwards, and is still living in Washington State now. And so it goes.

True - However Don Wilson passed away on January 22, 2022 in his sleep of natural causes, when his daughter Staci tried calling him continuously, and he did not pick up nor responded to her calls. The she went to his house to visit him just to discover he was not responding to her, and she immediately called the Tacoma Police, and the rest is history, She was very close to him all the way to his very end, and he was 88 years old when she discovered him expired in his sleep. And so it goes.

Reminds me of the days my friend Tim and I use to surf Pipeline (heading there this week on Vaca) all day, girls all night and listen to the Ventures ALL the time in between....

The Ventures, Surfaris, Tornado's and Dick Dale's Deltones created a sound and a feeling that will last forever. I started surfing because of the music. There are a few Classical pieces that can bring me to tears but Surf Rock moves me incredibly.

Thankfully I grew up in this Era listing to all this FANTASTIC music in fact went to a concert this past weekend where a few locals were putting on a Large Benifit. All former bands from this Era I would still be there if they were playing!

With so many bands in Japan covering the Ventures' songs, and seeing how much the Japanese people loved seeing Venture's concerts and loved the individual members, I can't help imagining that if the Ventures had existed in 1941 that there would have been no war between Japan the the USA. They guys were around in 1941...Mel was 8, Bob was 7, Nokie was 6, and Gerry was 4.
and probably I was in my mother's body ... Oh, no, not yet, I must have been then in my father's body in that case. Me? A Japanse born after the war and grown up during the Ventures era of Japanse history. :)
I do miss them, the original members, I mean. [I do not care so much who the original members were, though.] The point you raised here is interesting and profound in a sense. I do hope there was no such a cruel war between our twon countries. sorry for that.

This puts me in the mood for hitting the waves . But i live in Florida and they have walled off the beaches with condos and hotels .
And I thought California was nuts!
I lived in South Florida 52 years, never was much good surfing there, even before I went into construction and built a good chunk of those condos :p
It may not be surf heaven but I do credit Oregon with placing all our beaches public in perpetuity. Build what you want the water line belongs to the people.
