Roger is a good interviewer. We all know HE knows what's going on, yet he takes the time to ask good questions about his septic tank for the viewers to get context. Shout out to the septic guy too- there's definitely money in dirty jobs, and he's very succinct and humble.

I appreciate that😅, but I really don’t have much experience with septic tanks, Dominique, on the other hand, is a septic genius. I had fun learning from him

@@RogerWakefield great question! I’m glad you asked! I am not on a septic tank. I have a standard drain system that starts with a drain, and ends in the sewer treatment plant.

You'll need to find the distribution box and add more runs. Can't lengthen the original runs because they're gonna be plugged up. Possibly run a low pressure Jetter down each leg.

This should have been one of the first things looked at before you purchase a property always look at the plumbing.

Apprentice plumber from Ohio who just moved to paintsville KY and I'm looking for work, any suggestions? I have more than 3 years plumbing exp and over 20 years in construction/carpentry, been told by multiple people I could be a journeyman but I don't know code that well. Thanks in advance for any help!

For most trades.. to get journeyman is 2-4 years, registered as apprenticeship and state test. This typically doesn't transfer between states but you need to look at reqs for applicable states. This would prevent you from applying as a journeyman but you could start an apprenticeship with experience and raising your wages.

Good basic info but a lot of septic stuff left out… plus a plumber is not interested in the septic side of the house since they cannot work on anything past the clean out, so their only verbiage is “call the septic folks”… this is why I just took the course and got certified so I can work on my own system and know it gets taken care of correctly!!! 🤠

My septic field failed. I had a price of 15.000 to replace it. I hired a guy with a backhoe and replaced mine in 2 days for 2000.00 myself. This was in 2010

Hey Roger. A plumber recently quoted me $21,500 to replace 65 feet of cast iron pipe in a home (Garland, Tx). Is that a good price? Home was built in 1987 and we’re trying to sell.

Hard to tell...is this line located under the home? In the yard? If it seems too high, call around to other companies and get a second opinion..

It's obvious you have to pump the tank out to buy yourself some time and then figure out how to fix your drainfield. that's gonna cost you a ton of money if you can do it.

There is valid logic for being able to get away with not pumping for a long long time. However, nowadays most people put a lot more chemicals and “stuff” down the drain that didn’t used to be done. The chemicals can keep things from breaking down and things like flushable wipes don’t break down in a septic system. If anything but effluent gets in the drain field it slowly messes it up.
Overflowing septic tank is the worse thing for a drain field. It’s a good idea to pump it regularly esp since it doesn’t cost that much and replacing the it is very expensive. So figure pay $300 every 3-5 years instead of $20k to replace the field. Kinda like changing the oil of your car.
That said, drain fields go bad as they age anyway. But taking care of it will make it last much longer.

Was on a septic system and a leach field for over 11 years. I learned a ton to take care of it, and never had issues. Was I over cautious, maybe, but I never had a backup. Advantage to mine was mine was on an acreage and the leech field was big, bit it still needed maintenance. Issue is people drive or walk all over their leach fields, which compacts the soil. I have a feeling I could probably work in this industry with the knowledge I gained. But always game to learn more, thats why Im here

I run my own Septic Pumping business as well! Dominic and his family is great folks and great septic system guys! I recently bought an inspection camera from his brother.
Just wanted to add to this. Not specifically to the system in this video, but just in general on outgoing issues of a septic tank. the first thing I would do is check the outgoing baffle and the outgoing line leaving the tank because lots of times it’s something simple as just that. That the outgoing line has collapsed, choked off, root intrusion and so on. The last thing I would check off my diagnosis of a out going issue would be the drain field itself. So in a nutshell start from the tank and work your way “downhill”.
Many times I have received an emergency back up call. Get to the house and locate the tank. Dig the lids up and pop the lids off and the septic contents is up touching the lids or even water forcing up through the seams of the lids. Showing you right out of the gate that the effluent liquid can not leave the tank.
I would then pump the tank down and confirm we have flow from the house to the tank confirming no clogs in the incoming line. That way the people in the house can go back to using their plumbing for the time being they will have typically a 1000 gallon tank so they will have 1000 gallons of room for now until the out going issue is fixed.
Then I’d start diagnosing the out going line and in many causes it’s a simply an old outdated pipe material that has failed or collapsed. Not allowing the effluent liquid to leave the tank causing the back. Also find a lot of rust intrusion.

You mentioned not having a cleanout; I have that beat. Am on septic, the clean out and lid were both under the concrete patio. Went to HD, and rented concrete saw just to access cleanout because of clog in mainline.

the worst thing about having septic problems is having someone that is on the tax payers tit come around to inspect it, they can turn a simple job into a nightmare when they get tossing their weight around.

    Hi Roger,
I’m a licensed OSSF installer with TCEQ, but I have my BackFlow license and I took my CE for plumbing and am working on my OSHA and Code class. I actually know Dominique and his dad, Jesus. They own Juices Septic out of San Saba, TX. I live in the Temple/ Waco TX area. Currently I’m in Nigeria and I was wondering where I can send you some videos of the plumbing systems here?
