For those of you who watched back in the 70'ies, the lonely Shaolin priest wandering through the Wild West, here is the most memorable scene of the whole series, the final ritual of 'tattooing' the Dragon and Tiger in his hands from the pilot in the first season. Enjoy!
One of the best role models ever created...quiet, humble, honest, peaceful and deadly.

I grew up as a student of traditional Chinese martial arts in the 1970s when this series aired. In my opinion, the fight choreography was not always the best, and I often wonder how fight scenes would have benefited from having Bruce Lee involved. Unfortunately, Lee's strong Asian accent and appearance was considered too "Chinese" and he was passed over for the role of Caine. Nuts.
That said, the temple flashback scenes still impress me to this day and are my favorite part of each episode. The life lessons of temple life that the young Caine experienced transcend the martial arts aspect of the series, and are still very relevant today.
I wish some TV network would have the balls to rebroadcast the entire series. This is the best television ever aired.

They could rebroadcast it but there would need to be modifications. Cane would have to be transexual. And Master Po and Master Kan would have to be gay lovers. The whole social agenda of the show would have to have a huge makeover.
Kung Fu awakened in me when I was 12 almost half a century ago the interest in eastern spirituality, the monastery scenes, the music, and the teachings from the monks, simply incredible! I have the DVD collection of the series and a book with detailed explanation of each episode, there’s another book with all the spiritual sayings that would be cool to have. This scene is iconic! Thank you!

As a boy in the 70's this scene inspired me to take lessons in Lau Gar Gong Fu with a Chinese teacher.
Yes that is wonderful. I was instructed by a Buddhist friend in college in the art of tai chi chuan. Now in my 70’s doctors are amazed at my balance and core strength. Thanks to my friend who taught me well.
I was a 12 year old English school boy when Kwai Chang appeared in Kung Fu on TV. I developed the desire to be a shaven headed monk, learning from wise masters like him. Four years later at 16 I joined the Hare Krishna's and shaved my head. Now 50 years later, I'm still a monk and I'm living in a holy place in India. I have much to thank the producers and actors of this production!

Master Kan was kind of a frosty, icy dip whereas his blind Master Po was a kinder and warmer guy...like a sweet Grandpa which is what Caine needed. Man, I miss this show so much...gosh, we have fallen as a society in such a short, short time.
And we haven't hit the bottom; that's the scary part.

That was Master Khans job to be the disciplinarian and to help the students to reach a high level. Po was the balance side of khan!

jaim haas although your comment is a year old, if you read this response could you explain why the show symbolized hope? I watched this show as a child in the seventies and I never got a sense of hope from it. KCC was running for his life when he escaped to America from China. For me, this show always represented knowing right from wrong and standing up for the weak and down trodden. Cain always faced evil head on when it could not be avoided. Peace and submission were always the preferred ways until the bad guys went too far. And then Cain showed them the error of their ways. For me, this show was about true justice.
If you disciplined yourself and lived a selfless life hope came to you.
This showed personified racism. And our fears of anything different.
A great TV show from a great era in popular culture, where the audience was given some credit for having something on the ball. :)

It's probably because we know that he spent many years under Master Po's tutelage, that he was very close to Master Po, that it's much because of Master Po that he became the man he was here, and that now, he's going out on his own, perhaps, for all he knows, never to see Master Po again.....

Great series, and it came at the right time for me (high school). Cain was a man of peace, surrounded by a new world, The wild west.
Leaving the temple by snatching the peble, was a fatal mistake. Going out in the world he faced consequences by getting in to very big trouble comitting crimes starting with the Royal Nephew.
Love the scene in the series pilot, when other Chinese in America recognize these marks and they are all stunned.
In his prime, having reached the threshold of applying a disciplined understanding, Kwai Chang departs the temple. A permanent condition not marked by remorse, but genuine affection from his masters. We know this because he's marked for the tigers strength, the dragons wisdom and a slight smirk from Master Po suggesting a foxes cunning. The type of cunning that a few well placed whispers to colleagues delivers Kwai Chang's ascension into the winter, where his burns are soothed in the snow. ("See you around kid.")~Po
I always thought that it was so kind for the temple to plan the graduation in winter snow so that the grad could get immediate relief after that fiery brand.

This has got to be the most amazing scene in Kung Fu ever just absolutely brilliant and I have seen the entire movie plus the television series Kung Fu The Legend Continues on Sky 1 during the late 90's and it got me interested in Shotokan Karate and I made it to Black Belt 3rd dan and this program enspired me to take up Martial arts and now I am a expert so many thanks to David Caradine RIP.

Not one man, Caine included, doubted his ability to descend the mountain temple. Each step he took was peaceful, quiet, and measured.
This is the coolest scene of the whole series.
Yes, all of his training led to this. Now it is his time to leave Shaolin and impart his wisdom (and other things) to others.

Man even though Bruce Lee was supposed to play this part it was his script it worked out very well need more cerebral shows like this instead of all the shows trying to indoctrinate to the gay agenda.

We would watch this then Kung Fu each other at school, I remember drawing dragons and tigers on our fore arms with red ink pens, yes the good ole days it were.

I would say it's the shaolin,martial arts philosophy behind it all that's been there for hundred's and thousands of years.
there is a book that might be of interest it's called, TAO OF JEET KUNE DO by BRUCE LEE. NOW Bruce Lee didn't write the whole book,only parts of it and his wife Linda Lee Cadwell wrote the other part.Bruce Lee had died so that's why his wife finished it.Its more of a book about Bruce Lee s, philosophy on JEET KUNE DO but you might pick up a copy and learn something from it.

I always like this show for it's color, lighting, and photography, sometimes the plots too.

Iconic show. The term "grasshopper" is a huge pop culture reference much like "jedi" or "wax on wax off".
I don't hear it much...usually with the older and wiser, but it is always comforting when I do.
I used to watch this show in the seventies when it was still in production fifty years ago.
This show was an easy target for parody and jokes, but it really was a well written and well performed series.
Especially for the 70s, when almost all of TV was complete crap..
As a massage therapist I can tell you that burning your skin and searing your fascia to brand your flesh is incredibly counter productive to musculoskeletal-tissue health. He wouldn't have even been able to spear a block of tofu with a chop stick for weeks.
Of course, he's a shaolin and can transcend physical pain and yada yada....

Ancient meditative training of separating mind from body. Takes years of meditation to achieve as I’ve read numerous times. Caine had reached that level at this point in his training as you have mentioned in your thread about having to endure one extreme then having to endure the polar opposite.
If that was me, I'd have been banging my fists against the door yelling where's my snow boots and goose down parka jacket.

In the real temple, as I understand, the Quon Yin Monastery (San Soo, not Shaolin) the whole hallway was a trial. There was the rice paper, but they had it rigged so arrows, hatchets, etc. would fly out. It was a long and arduous test. The urn was at the very end. Once lifted and moved its weight triggered the gate so it would open. I don't know that they do this in a Shaolin Temple or if they ever did. That was northern style while San Soo is southern style.
Hmmm. Great trivia to those who never knew, including myself.
It's in the Shaolin Mountains, hence the name.

Achievement and sadness at reaching the end of his training becoming a master also but losing the closest friend and father figure in his life .
I vividly remember the branding from childhood in 70’s. Sitting on bus to school or alone in contemplation staring at my arm… the tendons and veins…. Rubbing them as I imagined the results of cooking them.
I'd be watching some childish girly TV show and my teenage older brother would come into the room and yell "get out of here little girl! I'm going to watch Kung Fu". So I started appreciating the show at 8.

I've always liked this show for its photography.
When I took martial arts classes years ago, our sensei spoke of how when he was in training as a young man, his master would have them practice with a short staff called a "jo" and perform kata (choreographed pattern of movements made to be practiced alone, and also within groups). His master would have them practice the form outside in the snow so they would learn more quickly. They learned the movements in no time at all.

I can only imagine the pain of how it must have felt, to feel the intense heat, as the markings on either side of the small grill burned their way into his arms, tattooing him permanently with the markings of the Shaolin Priesthood.
There is another pain seen here, although it is not mentioned.
The pain of, in his own way, having to say goodbye to his Master, Master Po, whom he loved like a Father, just as he did Master Khan.
Then, it was outward, and onward, to a new life.....
If only Master Po could meet Mr. Miyagi, that would be a wonderful conversation.
I forgot about the first time I saw name Mr. Miyagi, but recalled it on Cobra Market View where someone used the name and picture as a handle in the blog.

yes if you look at the masters that show their brands before he walks up to the pot their Tiger brands are on their right fore arms.
I have both dragon and tiger tats as a tribute to the show...while it was the dragon branding I loved best when I first watched KF all those years ago - which I put it on my right arm out of personal preference. In two episodes, King of the Mountain and Blood Brother s.1, KCC does have the dragon on his right arm!...Whether this is a mistake in continuity, or a mistake as it were during the first eps of the show is a mystery. By the way, look carefully: as Kwai Chang in this scene brands his right arm only for both brandings....another mistake!!! ;)

Pretty tough graduation test. But he can't complain, not when the masters all show them their scarred arms, proving that they've already done this. The Shaolin masters never asked of their students something that they hadn't already done themselves.

As someone who did something similar (voluntary third degree burns to an arm), it doesn't hurt as much as you would think. The nerve endings are instantly destroyed. You feel little pain. It's the mental part of it that will stop people.

For the record, passing the pebble-snatch, rice paper walking and dragon-tiger marks-branding marked the end of a Shaolin monk training but did not signal the end of his overall stay at the temple; following these , a monk could be elevated to priesthood level and continue to live in the temple training newcomers and so could Caine was he not forced to flee the country to avoid arrest following the killing of the royal nephew to avenge master Po's murder; easily Kungfu was the best series ever and the awsome lines offered by Caine's masters reflecting eternal moral principles of respect, nature-dictated wisdom, humbleness, serenity and the immortal interaction of the two main dimensions of everything living (ying and yang) will always echo through time as rightful personality forging norms and instrumental values in rendering the mind-body interface most effective.
Loved this series. On Saturdays about 7pm approx? mid to late 1970s. Brilliant.
